    Andrew, what is art?
    Before defining art - or any concept - we must answer a far broader question: what's the meaning of man's life on Earth?
    Maybe we are here to enhance ourselves spiritually. If our life tends to this spiritual enhancement, then art is a means to get there.
    This, of course, in accordance with the definition of life, art should help man in this process.
    Some say that art helps man to know the world like any other intellectual activity.
    I don't believe in this possibility of knowing.
    I am almost an agnostic.
    Knowledge distracts us from our main purpose in life.
    The more we know, the less we know:
    Getting deeper our horizon becomes narrower.
    Art enriches man's own spiritual capabilities and he can then rise above himself to use what we call 'free will'.

    I see your point but must beg to differ with some of it. I think that RUclips and like forums is perfect for significant discussion, because it's where the momentum is. If brevity is necessary, then so be it, and that may not be a bad thing. We live in a world of information overload and sound bites. Long-winded is out. This is a perfect framework in which to practice and apply succinct significance. The world is evolving ever faster, and this medium is on the leading edge of change.

    I wasn't describing a kind of art. Nor was I endorsing mediocrity or insincerity or materialism or anything at all, for that matter. I'm happy to be stirring commentary (which actually was part of the intent), but I fear the point was lost.

  • @deepdivestudios
    @deepdivestudios 15 лет назад +1

    A definition only poses an interpretation of a word, so a particular definition of "art" cannot "destroy" art without conflicting with some other definition (which is supposedly the true definition). What you are really saying is that the definition of art shouldn't disagree with YOUR definition. I don't see a problem with that, but then everyone should be able to say the same thing. That doesn't make EVERYTHING art, though.

    People on Earth are confident with love, but they totally lose their confidence when it comes to spirit. I am a scientist.... according to my analysis and observation, we are here on Earth to love rather than to enhance our knowledge or spirit. No one understands knowledge or spirit. However every one can love soul regardless of capability, intelligence, poverty, social class, disability, illness, age, language, culture and even gender.

      They can but they don't. Why? I believe if people really understood what Tarkovsky here (in my opinion) is saying, the very difference between potentiality and actuality would disappear, or at least ought to.

    ... and so it follows from the idea of wrong definitions of art that... and I think we are all in agreement... true art should NEVER be:
    1. uncongruous
    2. meeching
    3. unctuous
    4. inobsequious
    5. fallow
    ... and those who produce wrong art should be placed on a controlled list and monitored with sky-based tracking technology. And when they appear in forums from that point on, authorities should be prepared to jump out and yell, "Caveat emptor! This is NOT art!"

  • @deepdivestudios
    @deepdivestudios 15 лет назад +1

    My definition of "art":
    Art is the product of the following 3-step process:
    1. Do something.
    2. Call it art.
    3. Believe it, or convince someone else to believe it.

  • @deepdivestudios
    @deepdivestudios 15 лет назад

    So what? ... So nothing. Why does art necessarily have to be spiritual, or even significant? Here's an idea... How about a giant weapon that fires sh-t into the emptiness of space as a greeting from the human race to anyone out there able to receive it?
