I've finally decided to start a Patreon, and I'm really excited about it! There's no pressure to join, I'll still be making videos for free on this channel, but if you do become a Patron, you'll know that you're supporting me to make more DSLRguide videos, with less advertising. Plus, there are some fun perks! It would make my day if you can take a look: patreon.com/DSLRguide

Hello Simon. Fantastic channel. When I start earning some money I would love to support your Patreon. I enjoy supporting creators. It makes me sad that people are not earning enough from their day jobs to enjoy life to the full. I hope things change. ❤️
Becoming a mother changed my life. My daughter has given me so much joy. No money can replace that. So I am for ever grateful. The best things in life are free. 😊❤️

I think the scary part is “clout chasers” and people that wanna get rich quick turn these platforms into an endless field of mindless content. Places like Tik Tok and RUclips could be great for artists, but it’s oversaturated now. Even streaming is getting dangerously close….

    • @WolfsHaven

I agree to a point and it really comes down to who is willing to put in the work.
Those that are get better over time and it's often interesting to see how far they've come by looking at their earlier work.
Those that don't put in the effort never really improve and often quit once they see that you don't get rich that quickly and it's harder work than they thought. Most end up weeding themselves out if they can't provide content people actually want to watch. A few last solely because of personality. Even if the content is bad people are still willing to watch them in thier pseudocelebrity. Fortunately there aren't that many.

I feel this. It's almost a self-imposed gatekeeping of sorts. I'm a musician who's been working on my music for a long time. I keep acting like if what I make isn't up to a certain standard then it isn't worth sharing. Been working that idea out of my head. What I'm supposed to be doing is sharing something that represents me.

The shots of the artwork being created are absolutely gorgeous! Choice, framing, narrow DoF, colors, texture, lighting: perfect! The skin tones are wonderful, very similar to film, such as Fuji Eterna neg (for example the tv show: House M.D.). And I agree: scrap the labels, just continue doing what you do - loving it!

Great video Simon, just coming back to your channel after a while. There’s such a long running argument over art vs media vs content vs whatever, and so much contradiction in all these arguments. For example when you said mentioned “lower expectation” for RUclips videos, I’ve never seen a Hollywood movie where there was a box underneath where I could give feedback directly to the film maker. Then there’s the quality argument and yet someone that throws some paint on a wall is considered art vs a commercial illustrator producing life like drawings is content.
It's fantastic of you to discuss this so honestly (and beautifully) and the truth is that this kind of pigeon holing is damaging to creativity. Ironically pretty much the only people that judge in this way are creatives.

Man. This really hits me. I've been subscribed to you for years, and this is far and away the most personally meaningful video of yours that I've watched. The struggle of whether or not to create, whether it's worth creating if it's not up to my own standards or if it's better to just save myself from potential disappointment... the struggle that too often leads to not creating at all. The thought that the effort won't be worth the product, as if the effort itself can't be of value. Now I sound pretentious. Thanks for your video.

Hah, talk about expectations: I feel like I should also put more effort into writing this comment.
Because as you mention the distinction you make between Netflix and RUclips, my distinction for RUclips goes further into "artsy" videos and "content" videos.
When in the end, we should be the ones drawing the lines for ourselves. Or erase them all together.
After all, RUclips, Netflix, and cinemas are all just platforms to share creations.

Regarding this vid: I'd have thought that as long as you're enjoying creating, it wouldn't matter so much the target platform (presuming the income is the same from all platforms).
Also, really interesting to see that it takes a team to produce this vid. It looks really professional, but I ... I just hadn't thought that the reason for that "effortless" professionalism is the slew of names behind. Really interesting. (As you can guess, I know nothing of video production.)

  • @TheFlamingGamerYT

I can understand that conflict/question. I myself am in the similar boat, except instead of filmmaking, I draw. I don’t necessarily see myself as a professional artist, I can say that I do draw pretty good. I do want to take that somewhere in the future that isn’t just showing it on RUclips, but maybe just be able to share my passion much bigger I guess you could say. I also want to become an animator, and having already drawn for so many years, a little over a decade now, it’s a starting point to becoming an animator. Im excited for my future, and I hope to succeed in becoming the animator that I see myself wanting to become. I’m sure you’ll find your true self/find your passion that truly makes you who you are. Also, I hope you’ll have a great weekend :)

@@DSLRguide Yeah. Also, just to clarify one one thing. I do want to show my passion on RUclips for wanting to become an animator in the future (once I’ve taken a class in college, preferably online, and have understood it enough), but I’m still not certain if I want to take it further than that. Some of my family have said I could end up getting a job working for Disney Animation Studios or something along those lines, and while that would be cool, I’m just not sure of that part of my dream just yet. It’s a bit of an unknown thing for me that I can’t decide on yet. But I agree, we’ll find our footing one day and we’ll do what we enjoy that truly makes us happy. How are you doing today by the way?

Content creator has become a very broad term but has also become more socially acceptable than RUclipsr for some reason. Maybe because it sounds more professional or the fact that it doesn't lock you to one platform.
Even worse is the controversy of filmmaker vs videographer. I think it's mostly feature film Hollywood types, feeling like thier craft has been diminished by vlogging, product reviews, and other content.
The best perspective I've seen on it is that a filmmaker tells a story, with a beginning, middle, and end. Where a videographer records events as they happen.
However many of the rolls involved are identical between the two. A camera operator is still "filming" (eventhough film is rarely used anymore). There is often scriptwriting, set design, etc involved in both. DIY/how to videos still tell a story. Short films even if only released on RUclips are still films by the above definition. So it's really a case of semantics in my opinion.
You do all of the above so call yourself whatever you like.
I refer to myself as a videographer and content creator as most of my work is filming events for other people which they release however they like.

I am an actor! (Not just a regular actor but a super duper) an actor who is lost in responsibility, some crap around! Lot of laziness sometimes, excuses may be! Watched ur couple of videos and 🤩

I,ve already completly let go the of one being more worthwhile than the other. Both terms: pretentious artist or vapid content creator have to do with comparison. If we keep comparing each other we will never fully grow.
I am still comparing myself in the ways I work, but I,ve let go of what I am and I embrace the term artist because I do consider myself one. I Don,t care anymore what others think, cause to some I am and to others I,m not.
    👍

The production style of this vid definitely has me thinking "Pretentious Artist" is the correct label here.

@@DSLRguide idk man I feel like you could get just as much mileage out of vids like this with low production value. Save the effort for projects where it'll actually make the final product better.

i love your channel, I really am happy to know you thru your channel, but you are a brilliant at this journal like feel. I don't know if its not squashing your film potential. You arent pretentious, but "artist" is a word people use to put others on a pedestal, self describing as an artist seems a waste of syllables. what one is more primarily is expressive, and you are that, yup. I think it would make sense to convert this kind of journal-storytelling into a story which uses the same tools you've developed. write something like the tone of this video as a work of fiction, with a character like yourself, perhaps dealing with heightened versions of the struggle you talk about here. Im saying the seed of something really good is in your video. you have 918k subs and I am comment 147. and im nobody. but i think that just taking a break from the YT world may help you focus on the real medium you were born to do...YT is like a good proving ground, but you're probably destined for more ;) damn you for making me be all serious lol. now go watch some trash tv!

Though I agree with most of the points, I respectfully disagree with your reasoning why "cinema has more esteem than tiktok". I believe it's not because of how people consume it but because of how high is the entering barrier for the platform. Anyone can create RUclips account and post, and it's much harder to publish smth on Netflix. That creates this perception of cinema being closer to "art".

That’s a good point - curation is a huge part of what makes something prestigious.

That was a really good reflexion, I've always tried to be the guy who watches all types of cinema, I can easily watch a French art film and then an action film. I just have the need to watch movies all the time and I'm pretty much always glad I saw one, even if I don't enjoy it as much.

Sounds like you’re doing it right - if everyone had less shame/snobbery hopefully we’d be more likely to try watching things we don’t usually watch, even if they seem like they’d be too artsy / trashy.

Don't overthink it. Make cool s* and don't worry about who calls what what. In the end, it is your life and you only get one so f* what anyone else thinks. Sometimes you've got to put the philosophy away and say f* it, ya know?
