As a filmmaker and graphic designer for a company, graphic design is CRUCIAL to professional video work. But what I learned as someone who has to make lots of timely content, is that it's less about the "visuals" and more on basic typography. You can make Arial look great with proper spacing, as long as you have proper hierarchy of information. Of course there's better fonts to work with but it just goes to show that it's less about that but more on having good minimal images.
I see this too often from other videographers and its really what sets the "pros" and "amateurs" apart. Doesn't matter how stunning your shot is if it's got ugly text on top. Most of the time text is displayed in the first few seconds of your video (logo, title, etc) and it already affects how someone sees your whole video. They'll "feel" it right away and may judge the rest of your video harshly - and they won't even know why.

It all just depends on what your goals are. I think as a filmmaker such as yourself it makes total sense to learn more about graphic design and to post on social media to attract clients and nice projects. For others that are maybe part of an agency or sorts or any company as a videographer, they might not be looking for freelance gigs etc.
For me personally, I need to keep posting as well and will definitely look into graphic design more since I would categorise myself more in the same range of filmmakers as yourself, albeit at an earlier stage. Interesting video! 🙏🏻

Go ahead Simon. Another great video. Design is everything you can see or imagine. How you frame your picture has a lot to do with proportions, in the end with visibilty and this is Design. I think we all in the Media industry often isolate photography, filmmaking an classic art. But they all follow the same artistic rules to be understood by an audience. Very cool that you looking constantly to improve your work. It makes a lot of sense to change the perspective and look from another professional angle on your own work. Like it very much, and your thoughts on this topic make it more obvious. Great!

It's funny, I discovered you in 2016 while at my graphic designer job while daydreaming about filmmaking, and can definitely say that since then I've used so many design principles and adobe programs all to enhance my filming/framing/color/lighting etc. It's pretty much what I already do except now the images move on me. So yes it definitely helps to beef up your design! You kind of can't avoid it as many of the principles and programs are the same!

Great video, Simon. I couldn't agree more about the importance of graphic design. I am a filmmaker and photographer first and a graphic designer second. Though it wasn't until I really started caring about and learning graphic design that I realized how important it is for every aspect of any visual art. At first I started making designs for newsletters, signs, and things like that, but then I thought, "What if I could make that design move?" And so now I am learning about motion graphics. One thing leads to another and as long as we keep learning and getting better, we cant go wrong.

The situation with me is slightly different. For ages I've been working as a graphic designer, web designer and creative person in general. That has created some sort of inner standard I always try to stick to. Transitioning to film and video making has been a tough candy for me, because achieving the same look and feel i got used to throughout the last two decades was not easy for me, especially due to learning new tools (PP, AE). Anyway, visual consistency and the way my videos look is super important to me. BUT - the more I focus on this, I sometimes get drifted away from the initial intention - to tell the story. So to sum things up - yeah, visual presentation is important and can attract the attention, but don't let it become the ultimate goal.

I think we should choose the platforms that we enjoy using. and limit it to 2... maybe 3. I for instance, hate facebook... So I don't use it, that's a HUGE weight off my shoulders! Even just uploading and adding a description was frustrating me too much. I hate it!! But Instagram is ok, and TikTok is fun, so I upload there, and it feels like I'm enjoying the Tao principle of Wu Wei, it's flow, the water is running that way and I can effortlessly slipstream along. Rather than swimming upstream and struggling with FB! I follow and feel my path, and in doing that I'm more creative and excited to use certain platforms.
People like BTS, doesn't matter how bad the quality is, they're just nosy people and want to see how stuff is done. They want to envy you being productive and hope that it inspires them to pick up a camera, or a pencil.
In terms of Graphic Design, knowing the basics is enough. Keep it simple, remove distractions like you would in your frame. 1 or 2 fonts and no more. Create a style guide, and stick to it. Keep it consistent. Like that fashion saying, "before I go out, I remove one thing" - When the design is done, remove one thing!

Imo, it depends on what kind of person you want to be seen as. If you have a large fanbase and what to be seen as a "normal person" posting messy, quick snippets can help connect you to your viewers. But if you want to treat social media as a way to market yourself, then maybe more planning and preparation needs to be involved. Though, I cant really speak too much about it.

If the type of videos you want to make require you to submit a document for clients or producers, I agree, you should learn about the standards they have for presentation and work towards meeting them and optimizing that presentation to be the best it can be. Same goes for social media, if you want your income to be from social media like youtube then you should probably do casual, approachable content on other platforms to drive that engagement.
However I hate both of those ideas and I refuse to do either. I refuse to conform my work to meet the needs of corporate culture or to satisfy algorithmic weighting. I create things I enjoy and because I enjoyed the process of creating them. I don't view my work as being an end to a marketing means.
