    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

      @@Parv_69k Fairy type was actually introduced to tale the "Drag" out of DragMag. Between Garchomp, Salamence, Hydreigon, Latias, Latios, and Kingdra, having a team of 3 or more dragons was too overwhelming since Dragon type attacks hit everything neutrally, except Steel, which resists it. That's where Magnet Pull Magnezone came in. Trapping opposing steels and killing them would remove the only counter to Dragon spam. Fairy was introduced to give an immunity to Dragon that was balanced by its weakness to Steel that wasn't trapped by Magnet Pull.

    How good would a move that is every single type be ACTUALLY?
    Edit: Actually, I'll answer this myself, because now I'm legitimately interested. It's a really complicated question, and you would assume such a move would be OP, but would it be really?
    For starters, such a move would be totally walled out by Normal, Ghost, Ground, Flying, Dark, Steel, and Fairy types, as well as Pokemon with the abilities Levitate, Lightning Rod, Water Absorb, Flash Fire, Dry Skin, Justified, Motor Drive, Sap Sipper, Storm Drain, and Volt Absorb. That list contains a TON of Pokemon, so not off to a great start.
    Here is a list of the rest of the type weaknesses and resistances. Basically, if a type has more weaknesses than resistances, it will be super effective. If it has more resistances than weaknesses, it will be not very effective. Including immunities again just to have them comparable to overall super-effectiveness at a glance.
    Immune: Normal, Flying, Ground, Ghost, Steel, Dark, Fairy
    1/8: Fire
    1/4: Poison, Water, Electric
    1/2: Dragon
    Neutral: Fighting, Bug
    2x: Rock, Grass, Psychic
    8x: Ice
    Overall, two neutrally hit types, four types that are hit super effectively, although the rare Ice type is the only type that is hit harder than normal. Dragons resist, while four other types are even more resistant than normal, especially Fire types, which would shrug off hits with ease. And of course you've got the *seven immunities.* Yikes. Just about the only thing that saves this from being utterly terrible is the fact that this move would get double-STAB on a dual type Pokemon, meaning it hits twice as hard as it's stated power. In this instance, the chart becomes this:
    1/4: Fire
    1/2: Poison, Water, Electric
    Neutral: Dragon
    2x: Fighting, Bug
    4x: Rock, Grass, Psychic
    16x: Ice
    Since we've still got seven types that resist, meaning to total number of types that "resist" is still 11 compared to 6 types hit super effectively with one neutral hit, overall the resistances definitely win out, and more often than not, the move will be not very effective. Ice and Rock types have become fairly rare and grass isn't very prominent, so awesome. You can hit Psychic types for 4x effectiveness, but that's the only common OU type you hit extra hard. And most of the common OU types are immune to your hits. You'd be better off using a monotype move.
    Unless you are an Arceus that is every type at once firing off effective base 147790 power Judgements. Seven types are immune to you, but you'd smite everything else.

    One of my all time favorites, as well as one of the best examples of how to add an evolution for a Pokémon in a later generation. With all the great water types from Gen 1, Seadra was very “meh.” But then it got the dragon typing, which at the time was the only one besides the Dratini line, & better stats. When I first started playing competitive, I used a rain team with Kingdra as my sweeper. Although, I do wish it had either better attack or special attack, instead of them both being at a decent 95. They could of had it have 115 special attack & 70 attack, or vice versa. Also, give it sludge Bomb. It’s weird that it doesn’t have it, considering one the Horsea lines biggest gimmicks in the anime was it spitting out sludge. It would work a lot better against fairy types than Flash Cannon.

      @@randyrandalman8234 Jeez as if there is any better place to do competitive singles. It's not like you can't use something when smogon bans it lol. Just move up the tiers until its legal (e.g Ubers, AG).

    • @randyrandalman8234
      @randyrandalman8234 5 лет назад +13

      @@redwarrior118 You're right - smogon's the best among the crappy options we got for singles. The problem with the "just move up the tiers" approach is that it the upper tiers (especially AG, a tier created b/c Mega Rayqueza) are not nearly as popular as OU, the staple format of singles with most players. I don't have an issue with moving pokes with overpowered stats into uber, but when you start banning specific attacks (e.g. Baton Pass, which is even banned in ubers lol), then it enters the realm of subjectivity and people wanting to ban stuff because they personally don't like it or aren't creative enough to metagame around it

    • @redwarrior118
      @redwarrior118 5 лет назад +8

      @@randyrandalman8234 The thing with Baton Pass, ANY pokemon could be the recipient of those juicy stat boosts. SM introduced the two best baton pass recipients OU has ever seen: Magearna (access to Soul Heart and 140 BP signature fairy move), and regular Necrozma (access to a bevy of boosting moves, high all around stats, and access to stored power). This was way too much for OU to handle. You could read the Smogon post here www.smogon.com/forums/threads/baton-pass-in-sm-ou.3604290/
      Banning these sort of stuff isn't exactly done by one guy either, it's done by community. Smogon usually raises pretty good points on why a certain thing should be banned to create a healthy metagame.

    • @randyrandalman8234
      @randyrandalman8234 5 лет назад +6

      @@redwarrior118 I'm pretty sure Baton Pass was banned before SM, Magearna, or Necrozma even existed. Besides the strength of Baton Pass isn't about the recipient poke rather maintaining the chain of boosts along the way. U can even use Magikarp as the finisher for maximum fun. While Smogon loves swinging a its ban-hammer like a big stick towards anything that disrupts it's beloved spikes+rocks, I prefer letting players adapt with alternative strategies to evolve the metagame through a more freeform approach over the inherently subjective ban hammer. What does a "healthy metagame" even mean?

    Scolipede with the crit boosting berry and baton pass is a great way of getting the 100% crit Kingdra out on the field.
