Just because a player had leads and opportunities to close out sets doesn't always mean they choked. People keep saying Daniil choked when really Thiem upped his level when Medvedev had opportunities to close out sets 2 and 3. Medvedev didn't play as well as he did earlier in the tournament, but he didn't choke and he is still one of the toughest players from a mental standpoint. Thiem was outstanding and he just beat him when it mattered.

Indeed, Medvedev didn't choke. Thiem was just the best, more complete player in that match! He had the larger arsenal, more weapons he could use to change the rhythm. Backhand slices, better touch, better net game and volleys. Medvedev is inept at those aspects of the game and that's why he lost.

He had chances but Thiem was consistently playing better. After he lost his serve early in the 2nd set, Thiem was holding his serves comfortably without any game going to deuce whereas many of Medvedev's service games went to deuce and it was a matter of time before Thiem broke him back. The 3rd set was definitely Medvedev's to take but again Thiem just wasn't giving up any free points. Overall, Thiem was returning better and had more energy in the rallies and deserved to win.

Wrong dude. Medvedev could have done plenty, he let the umpire and supervisor let it get to his head, where was this fire power with Nadal last year? He showed no emotion, and tamely let Nadal boss him, and now, when he shows it, it backfires on him, he played awful points on bp, and didn't have the belief he could win- or didn't feel he deserved to, the whole match could have turned, if he got the second, or third set. Nadal gets to gloat somewhere, knowing he did the damage last year, and could possibly, stop him for the rest of his career, ever getting a slam, he should put a jinx on Nadal, time for heavy prayers to come out!

It looked like they were both playing close to their current best level and Thiem's best level is just a tad better at the moment, so he is right to not be disappointed, he didn't do anything wrong and either way, woulda coulda shoulda is nothing to dwell on either way. He should just recognize where and why Thiem was better and start working. I really like his positive state of mind he seems to be in.
