    Thiem has now passed the toughest task and done the hardest part. You will literally never feel more pressure than today’s last set tiebreak. 6-6 to win your FIRST slam. Now he’s got this as reassurance, he’ll win multiple slams I expect.

      He is 27 now. Federer is now more or less retiring and likely soon Nadal will too. Djokovic is still around but Thiem has the game to beat him, even on hard court. Without another Big 3 type player coming up I'm sure he will win a few more. So happy for him today

      @@stevengao8527 Fed will probably retire in 2021/2022, I'm sad to say, and Nadal's playing style isn't great for longevity, so he won't go past 35 I think (2022), but Djokovic may make it to around 38 (2026), so Thiem has one proper rival in those 4 years, whom he can beat on clay, challenge on hard and quite often perhaps beat him, especially as he will start going into decline in a year or two.

    • @samberg3864
      @samberg3864 4 года назад +25

      @@alexs1504 That's a great point. It seems like a lot of people don't realize how hard it is for most people to be expected to win. Like, if you're expected to win, that means that your opponent also is aware that they're expected to lose. So it's much easier for your opponent to play freely and just try to play their best, while the favorite has to live up to the pressure of being the better player. In order for that not to be true, the favorite would have to be SO much better than his opponent that nerves just don't matter anymore. Like they'd have to be a fundamentally different class of player, which just doesn't happen at the grand slam level. At least not after the first couple rounds, and even the "worst" players that make it to grand slams and much closer in skill level to the big 3 than most people give them credit for.
      To me that's probably the most amazing thing about the big 3, is just how unbelievably consistently they beat players that they are "supposed" to beat. I guess that is basically what Alloe was saying about their mental game.

    Brave tennis from Domi tonight. He hussled and the accuracy in those critical moments was pinpoint. Hats off to both players for pushing a fifth-set tiebreak! But happy it was Thiem who finally broke through in the end.

    Back when I saw him at the US Open in 2016, I knew that he was a future champion. His technique and shot accuracy were already a cut above 90% of the field. Congrats! As for Zverev, he will win one major for sure. His game has evolved as well as his concentration. What a final!

    A very suspense & highly competitive final match. Both were calm, focus, professional, respectful & determined to battle every point to the last. A wonderful delight that Thiem emerged the champion - a brilliant & charming personality. Zverev is only 23 yo and will surely gets his chance to lift a Slam trophy one day.

      Djokovic still has a big gap at No. 1, but Domi could potentially overtake Rafa as No. 2 as the gap between them did shorten after Domi’s US Open triumph.
