- The Road to Mortal Kombat 12 begins here. Mortal Kombat debuted back in 1992 in Arcades, as Midway’s answer to the incredibly popular fighting game by Capcom, Street Fighter 2. It quickly became a video game phenomenon that would lead the US government to pass legislations for all video games to legally get rated by the ESRB. With fun and diverse characters, lots of special moves, fatalities and secrets to discover, and beautiful digitised graphics, Mortal Kombat is one of the most recognisable video games of all time. This is the history of Mortal Kombat Explained!

Liu Kang's MK fatality becomes legendary when preformed on pit stage
Wish he uppercut the opponent and they flew so high they never came back down until the announcement was finished randomly sometimes not cóming back and u see a star twinkle in the back . Signaling they was gone 😂
Or two diff Inputs gave those two diff results. Circle forward was the regular one which trigggers pit fatality also.
Circle backwards character fly out if the screen or randomly falls down when announcement says fatality

This is a brilliant video on the history of Mortal Kombat. I find it funny that MK finally come in full circles with JCVD. Back then, he turned down a role for his own game to be part of the Street Fighter movie, the Midway MK team was going to named it something else besides MK, so when JCVD turned it down, they decided the name MK and the character Johnny Cage who was basically a Bloodsport skin of JCVD. Now in 2023, Mortal Kombat 12 (MK1), JCVD is gonna be part as a skin for Johnny Cage, JCVD becomes the second actor to be part of both MK and Street Fighter franchise joining Robin Shou who played Liu Kang in the 90s MK and the Street Fighter movie of Chun Li. I’m happy for JCVD cause he finally gonna be part of MK, but feel sad for Daniel Pesina, they still got beef with that guy. FeelsBadMan LOL
Thanks man! Yeah I can’t wait to see what the JCVD skin looks like in MK1! It would be cool if we saw Carlos Pesina come back as Mokap even if it was just as a Kameo fighter
Am I alone in thinking since JCVD was unable to be a part of MK1 they decided to plan B with the Bruce Lee clone?

I rememeber getting mk for super nintendo for christmas in 93 along with zelda link to the past. Still to this day 2 of the best games ever made.
Never knew that about ermac that's actually pretty considering his more fleshed out appearance in MK X.
I have to take this moment to defend the Gameboy version. My generation went from the Tiger Ltd hand-helds, to playing games like Mortal Kombat on the way to Grandma's house. It wasn't perfect, but it was waaay better than counting license plates.

4:00-13:13 parents and media back then getting angry over the fatalites always seemed stupid to me,Like how could they not tell Mortal Kombat wasn't a bloody game? The first clue is the title itself and also the fact the characters bleed when getting hit

Mk11 is what got me back into mortal kombat. I love it. I stopped playing mk titles the game after shoalin monks, but kept up with the storyline, and decided to get mk11 3 weeks ago. I love it. Im surprisingly still good at it too, despite all the changes. Story mode is awesome too. Gonna do another playthrough tonight.

I know right? I lost track of the franchise after Armaggedon, I couldn`t get mk 9 because it didn´t come out to pc, mk X just didn´t do for me, but there was something with mk11 that just made me buy the game, I love it so much story and gameplay, loved it so much that I started watching videos, tournaments.

Liu Kang's Flying Kick move being canon (or was due to the utter retcon-happy rebooting MESS the series' consistency is nowadays...) to defeating Shang Tsung during the first tournament is/was awesome.
The genesis port of this game is the one I played as a young kid when my uncle got it for me. The music in that version I still pull up sometimes to play. Great stuff 😎

Edit: ABACABB for Sega blood code is done during the screen where there is a text section where you see the text appear word by word. When done right Scorpion yells his iconic "get over here" and the text turns a red orange. On the title screen that has arcade and option screen enter down, up, left, left, A, right, down. Once this is entered you get another special set of options as well as other miscelanios things you can interact with. Good fun

I don't think Donkey Kong and Pac-Man were really dominating the arcades in 1992. More like Konami and Capcom beat em ups and big multiplayer racing cabinets like daytona usa
*1991 at the beginning of the video when talking about arcades, I mention Donkey Kong and Pac-Man as they were two of the biggest arcade games of the 80’s and still would’ve been recognisable brands in ‘91. Certainly you also had early beat em ups like Final Fight, TMNT and River City Ransom, but Daytona USA didn’t release until 1994
6:33 the backgrounds behind their portraits have always reminded me of the backgrounds you could in the 90s on your yearbook photos. sure there's the blue and the green but If your mom really loved you shed spring for the backgrounds with lazers

I was 5 when it came out. Course I don't have any memories of playing it in the arcade. We rented the Genesis version before eventually buying the Sega CD version. We even had a 32X. 😂😂😂

Arcade Collection should include MK3 and MK4.
Including MK4 would’ve been great, it’s hard to play that game these days without using emulation

I think the best home version in the 90s was the PC version. You didn't show it, when you mentioned PC I think you showed Amiga, but that was based on the Genesis port. (Amiga and PC are different kinds of computers. Both are computers, but the architecture is so different it's like different consoles. At first in the 80s Amiga was superior by far, but in the 90s X86 DOS/Windows PC with VGA and Sound Blaster was already 32bits and superior to Amiga). The PC version looked almost arcade perfect, had no censorship, the gameplay was good and didn't have the weird lag the snes version has. MK2 was great on PC too, again almost arcade perfect except for a few details like Scorpion's walking instance not being correct, he walks like Sub Zero not with his arm up. (He has the right pose when he's standing still).
I wish they made a PS1 port of MK1.

I've never known any parents to ever care about that rating system 🤣🤣🤣
Whether it was older parents who just didnt even know anything about ot or modern day parents who grew up playing MK themselves, amd just do not care about them 🤷🏾♂️

I was 6 when I first played it, as were MANY of my mates in Salford, yes yes we knew we shouldn't but we didn't care 🤣 if our parents allowed it? So be it! It immediately became my favourite game (a far cry from Alex kid in miracle world and monaco GP on master system I was used to!) ... the jig was up though when every playtime at school, we'd kick lumps out of each other pretending to play MK ... and I may have once threatened a young lad by saying "ill rip your head off with the spine still connected!!!!" 🤣 the school sent letters home and it was banned in all aspects ... it did not work!

Oh , MK on the game boy was atrocious XD. The game gear version looked and played much better and 2 and 3 were even worse, but were still very popular.
