- In this video, Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DAVT, emergency critical care and toxicology specialist, discusses flea and tick medication poisoning in cats. You should NEVER apply a dog flea and tick topical medication to your cat without a) carefully reading the instructions, b) confirming with your veterinarian. That's because high-concentration topical flea and tick medications made of pyrethroids/pyrethrins can be deadly to cats.
While these products are safe for dogs, pyrethrins/pyrethroids can cause severe foaming of the mouth, tremoring, seizures, hyperthermia, clotting abnormalities, and death in cats. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian, your emergency veterinarian, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for life-saving advice. You can also try calling the company that makes the flea and tick medication if you're noticing any problems at all too!

I have a 5 year old Tuxedo Cat that’s extremely weak and sick that I’m trying to help stay alive… He had a severe reaction to a flea ointment prescription given by the vet and needs all the help possible!!! PLEASE I FEEL SO GUILTY FOR TRUSTING THE “PROFESSIONALS!” BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS USING IT ON YOUR PETS!! All advice is most appreciated!! ❤️🐯❤️
I just learned about this permethrin the hard way when I almost poisoned my cat to death. Luckily after a night in the ER she stable and on the mend but if you’re like me and charge into fixing something before you’ve done your due diligence you will end up paying the price. If it’s 9 at night and you realize you have an infestation in your house and on your cat DO NOT just run down and buy the crap at Walmart. Call your vet in the morning or you risk spending thousands and possibly killing your beloved pet. I’ll take some flees for a while over my cat suffering from tremors and seizures plus falling down due to loss of muscle in their back legs it’s horrible. I feel like I’m lucky my 17 year old cat lexy is still alive. I’ve been hugging and feeding her all the wet food she wants for a 3 days now. Thanks for the video
Did your cat full recovered?
Awww 💜🌸
Your video helped me save my cat life today .. it almost died he’s in the hospital. Will be discharged in the morning tomorrow . Thank you for posting this.
I washed him in flea shampoo that had that drug in it. Nearly killed him. Had severe tremors came here to this video and saw this.
So glad to hear your cat is OK!!!!
Same here! Adams flea and tick shampoo. Really need to know how long the tremors will last. It’s been 6 days since exposure. 2 vet visits later
I have four cats and I’ve had really good luck with the Seresto collars. They don’t last as long as they claim. I think the longest I’ve had them work is six months. The advantage drops remove hair on the black cat and doesn’t last long. Vacuuming a lot keeps the fleas at bay too. It’s a constant battle.
Sadly, once fleas are in the house, they keep producing eggs, which is part of the problem. I had the same problem with Advantage causing hair loss on my cat once, but it grows back! You can talk to your vet about a super safe birth control for flea eggs to help (lufenuron).
Good bit of info and thank you Dr. Lee.
You Americans never give any advice for when a vet isn’t readily available.
Thanks ma'am
When used on cats, pyretrhrin for dogs may result in what we non toxicologists call 'kitty death'
So my cat got into flea and tick spray and he started drooling really badly but the drooling has stopped but his chin is still wet occasionally.. I sadly cant take my cat to the vet due to my parents thinking it's not a big deal idk what to do EDIT: Its been about 15 hours and he still drools occasionally and I washed him pretty good with dawn so I hope he will recover I really love this cat
Check to see what the concentration is. If it's less than 1-3% of an active ingredient that ends with a "-thrin," it's likely not an issue. The drooling may be due to the benzyl alcohol in it and causes drooling. When in doubt, call the 800-number on the flea and tick spray and they can help you! Give something tasty to drink (milk) but don't force it.
@@drjustinelee Okay thank you so much ma'am he seems to be doing alot better
@@drjustinelee Seriously thank you any posion hot line I've called like ASPCA wants to charge me $70 just for simple information like this.. I can tell you actually care for animals thank you ♥️
@@drjustinelee Although I'm curious isnt milk bad for cats?
How long do the tremors last
Use diatomaceous earth. It's the only thing that worked for my babies.
How exactly did u use it? I’m terrified of putting these flea medications on my cats. I have DE food grade. I put on their cat gym already. How do u put it on ur cat?
@@nenaj1 I just sort of grabbed handfulls and rubbed it into their fur. it was kinda all over the place in their sleeping area for a bit, but it at least actually worked. The flea collars and flea drops not only don't work, but they've even been known to poison cats (google "Hartz kills cats" for info there). Good luck!
Hi! Unintentionally, I changed the packaging and administered product for dogs over 40 kg to my 3,300 kg kitten. When the first symptoms of poisoning started, I ran to the vet and that's why she was saved. She was hospitalized for three days. Yesterday she was discharged as she is out of danger, but she is still shaking a lot and has some spasms in her tail and hind legs. Does anyone know how long it will take to pass? It hurts my heart to see her like this, even more so because it was my distraction that put her in that condition...
I would make sure the product was bathed off well with Dawn dish soap (for washing dishes in the SINK). Your cat should also be on methocarbamol to help! Check with your vet again!
Yes im looking for info on how long the tremors will last as well.
@@ModrnGroveany updates?? How long did the cat went on like that?? And how is the cat doing. I am goin through the same thing
@@ModrnGrovemy cat is at the vet. The office is asking for
4,000 to treat her for
4 days.
BioSpot sells wipes made for cats with permethrin.
My cat died from it😢
My neighbors were spraying flea and ant spray all over their yard. Next day my cat was foaming at the mouth and stumbling around like rabies. I couldn't catch her either. We observed her from inside all day. Neighbor called and their cat was doing the same. Ours started drinking. So we think it was poisoning. She was like that all day was better by evening thank God.
Your neighbor is an idiot
@@nenaj1neighbor most likely oversized the spray
I used animal science , an anti tick and flea spray for cats and dog. He started foaming and running around like crazy. I was so scared for him that I bathed him immediately afterwards. The foaming stopped but he's still unsettled last night and is meowing non stop and wants to get outside. Now, he's hiding in the corner and only came out to eat once. I don't know what's happening to him and i'm scared.
It might be from the alcohol in it - if he tasted it. I would get to a vet immediately as I don't know what the ingredients are. If it's a low concentration pyrethrin (e.g., chemical name typically ends with a "thrin" ), it's less likely to be life threatening but hard to tell without the ingredients. It needs to be bathed off with a gentle liquid degreasing soap as mentioned.
I got Adams Plus Pyrethrin Dip For Dogs and Cats | Kills and Repels Fleas, Ticks, Lice, Gnats, Mosquitoes and Flies | 4 Fl Oz .
Is it okay to use it on my cats please help I haven’t used but would like to know so I can return ?????? 😢
If it's labelled for cats, then it's ok. I would check the concentration (as for cats, it has to be < 1-5% concentration of a "thrin" ingredient. When in doubt, call the company or check with your veterinarian!
NO! It almost killed my cat! Don’t use it!
Dawn dish soap!!
I have heard that Hartz has lawsuit against it for pyrethrin . Is it really safe to use in my doggie ?
NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POISON!!!!!!
What about fipronil ?
Many apartment pest control services have to be using pyrethrins otherwise the bugs won't die.
Think!
For me
Wife accidentally used dog flea medication. Cat won’t eat or drink, we’ve been using a syringe to feed patte food, and a separate one for water. She’s uncontrollably urinating, having tremors but no seizures yet. The medication has been washed off but her health has deteriorated in the last two days. Her eyes are responsive but she can’t stand on her own in the last hour or two. Thick drool, but her eyes haven’t gone yellow. Everything I’ve read everywhere basically says it’s a waiting game now. Is there anything I can do or give her that will help? I’m at a loss for what to do, and where I am, there is no vet access “due to an influx in animals through Covid” so no vets are taking new patients. The emergency animal hospitals all have 1 star locally and are putting down animals without the permission or consulting owners. At a loss for what to do since vet access is unattainable
Emergency clinics nor ANY veterinarian can put animals down without permission or consulting owners. You need to get your cat to a vet - it's not a "waiting game." It requires treatment with decontamination (Dawn soap) off the skin and muscle relaxants! I'd get to a vet immediately!
What to do if she licks it??? pls helppoo
He likes you, a lot. Is that your cat?
Seriously, thanks for this informative video. I was searching for Pyrethrins and cats and yours a lot of them just show a poor cat, without any explanation or helpful tips
Yes that's my own cat. :) He's a sweetie. Please don't use high concentration pyrethrins on cats!
You're right absolutely, I was looking mainly for pesticide interactions. Thanks again.
Also check flea bombs etc they also contain Pyrethrin.
What about the topical medication designed for cats? My cat is acting weird even though it's made specifically for cats.
AwakenedChild 11 --- the generic brands are dangerous.
I sometimes do see “adverse effects” or reactions. If you think your cat is having a reaction, I would call the company and your veterinarian right away.
I accidentally used Advantage 2 (0.015 pyrethrins) dog shampoo on my cat earlier. Once I realized this I immediately bathed him with dawn. He isn’t showing any symptoms of salivation, vomiting, tremors or diarrhea, but I’m still worried. He’s just been taking it easy the rest of the day/night. Is he in the clear?
If it's 2 and not ADVANTIX, it's not poisonous, but when in doubt, call the 1-800 number on the back. Only the high concentration is poisonous to cats!
@@drjustinelee thank you! I took him to my local vet to be safe and they said he was running a fever of 105. They gave him IV fluids and an injection of Polyflex along with some nutritional wet food to take home. Hopefully he’ll be back to his usual self in no time !
@@drjustinelee Is one percent cypermethrin shampoo with miconazole is poisonous to cats? My cat already had viral rhinotracheitis and stomatitis and had fungal infection almost all over body i had put cat spot on it cleared fleas ticks and mites but fungal remained i bathed him accidentally with dog shampoo which contains 1% cypermethrin and miconazole and he started having tremours and was hyperexcited but no salvation drooling or diarrhea or vomiting... After three four hours he was quiet and lived for two more days and later on died but I didn't get whether he died because of viral rhinotracheitis or Shampoo I see that shampoo cause was not the reason he died 99% but still how for my information and cats safety how much permethrin concentration is lethal to cats... My cat was already not eating anything for two days before and was eating extremely less for last ten days before i shampooed him...
My question is how much Permethrin concentration is fatal to cat and can cause cat death? My cat was 11 month old and was of 4 kg...
@@PiyaChoudhari Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm not sure what was going on here - that low of a % usually doesn't do that, but sometimes we can see rare adverse effects. If you notice that, you should bathe it off immediately with a degreasing dish soap (for washing dishes in the SINK) and seek veterinary attention right away. I'm so sorry to hear about that.
Justine, What about raid flea carpet spray? I read that its .14 pyrethrin. Is that harmfull to cats?
Great question - cats tolerate up to a 1-5% of pyrethrhin. So Raid flea carpet spray is safe, but make sure your cat(s) and other pets (especially FISH!) are out of the room when sprayed. Make sure the product is dry before allowing your cat back in.
@@drjustinelee will it be fatal if they happened to get some on em and lick it? Or just make them sick
Not fatal. Drooling and rare vomiting with LOW concentration.
@@justinelee9930 ok thanks so much.
I put 1% she become hrpothermia and lithargic what to do i have no vet in my town plzzzzz help
How do you know it's 1%? I would confirm that asap and still bath it off with warm water and a liquid dish soap asap to get it off if you think she's having a reaction. I'd provide some warm blankets and get her to a vet asap!
My poor lil girl is having minor seizure....She looks worse 😥😥😥
Get to a veterinarian immediately!
My grandma put 4x times as much drops meant even for a 10kg dog and now my cat is having serious spasms , he can't control his years , they are always moving and he just doesn't stop rooling over on the floor. Our vetenarian gave us some injections to help him. Im going to post an update If He is okay! Also he doesn't want to eat and drink water! He is also breathing Really fast! He is really sick.
You need to bathe him with a liquid dish soap to get it off too. I hope he's doing ok - get to the vet if he's getting worse!
oh my gad, is he ok now.....
What is a good topical flea and tick medication for cats over 9lbs
I would talk to your veterinarian about it - there are several topical types you can use including Revolution, Bravecto, etc.
Comment for algorithm
my kittens were accidentally poisoned with deltamethrin 1.25% . I immediately bathed them . They were profusely salivating for hours . They eat well but after 4 hours they showed episodes of what it seems to be like paresthesia . For now it's been 20 hrs since the administration . Are they out of danger ?
Yes they are likely out of danger as this is a very LOW concentration of pyrethrin, thankfully! The drooling is probably secondary to the alcohol within the product. Definitely don't use this on or near them again, to be safe.
Thank you 😊 They are back to normal now 🙏
@@poojan8821 did you treat them if so how? My kitten got poisoned yesterday so I'm worried she looks fine but there are a few things that's off
I have my cat flea treatment for cats and she licked it and she started foaming please is it ok?
Is it definitely a CAT flea treatment? If so, it's likely due to the benzoyl alcohol in it - when in doubt, call the 1-800 number on the box of the container to be safe or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center right away. In the meantime, I'd recommend giving something tasty to eat like chicken broth or canned tuna WATER (NOT oil) to get the taste out of the mouth!
@@drjustinelee yes it's for cats it's called advecta and I put water in her mouth and stopped her from licking it she seems normal now but still worried thank you for answering my comment! Btw
So I’ve been using Hot Shot containing lambda-Cyhalotherin on carpets and I used Gamma-Cyhalotherin to treat the yard around my house in accordance with the directions, in both instances the cats were kept away until the treatment was dry, should I be concerned for the safety of my cats if I’m using pyrethroids correctly? I understand zero exposure to pyrethroids is the safest but should I be worried about the treatments I have already applied? None of my cats have shown any signs of toxicity
See what the concentration is - typically if it's < 2-5%, it's not going to be a huge deal, but I would call your vet or the ASPCA APCC just to be safe!
Justine Lee thank you for your quick reply, both cyhalothrin products are well below 0.1% by weight.
No prob! That concentration is super safe!!!
No prob! That concentration is super safe!!!
I accidentally used this on my cat she is acting fine the only symptoms she is having is that she’s alittle twitchy it’s been 24 hours since I applied it to her is she in the clear I’ve bathed her with dawn dish soap about 8 hours after it was applied an I realized she was acting odd
Sounds like you should be in the clear - I'm glad you bathed her and got it resolved quickly! Hope she is ok!
I thought detergents are really bad for cats and can cause kidney failure
Great question - yes, cationic detergents are, but Dawn liquid dish soap is so benign and strips the oily poison off.
Too bad I'm broke
damn.. now i want cat :3
I bought a flea and tick spray for cat kitten dogs and puppies and now my kitten is foaming at mouth I am super worried what should I do?omg I'm freaking out rn
I would call the 800 number on the bottle. Most of hte time, it's due to the alcohol in there and it means they groomed it off.
@@drjustinelee thank you
Is your cat fine? My cat went through the same early in morning , i think she's okay now but did you take your cat to the vets, or did your cat become okay
Is it poisin
It could cause irritation to you if you get it on you so I'd wash it off with Dawn dish soap immediately.
@@drjustinelee and if I don’t wash will I die
What about flumethrin
Depending on %, yes, this can be poisonous too as it's a pyrethrin.
