  • Dr. Lera talks about fleas with Ruby, his own four-year-old Cavapoodle.
    Fleas are a nuisance. These tiny, blood-sucking parasites irritate your dog and infest your home - often before you realize that fleas have moved in. Many dogs are allergic to flea bites, which can cause intense scratching, red and flaky skin, scabs, hot spots, and hair loss. Fleas can also cause tapeworm and anemia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fleas prefer animal hosts but will resort to biting people when animals are unavailable. They can transmit germs that cause disease by feeding on hosts or through fecal contamination, when infected flea feces are scratched into an open wound. (source: AKC)

    i couldn't afford
    to pay for my dog to get treated for fleas so i bathed him in a apple cider vinegar bath and a baking soda bath 2 separate washes rite away i swear they started falling dead going down the drain . then i took him out and dried him and i plucked each and every single flea off of him and thankfully never saw one again but it did take me 2 days to get all of them
    i did 2 baths one day one and one day the other . he's still doing well thank God

    Do you know much about IVDD in Dachshunds at all as mine had stage 4 and he is doing well but still arched a lot and due to living so far away from big towns it is so hard. Thank you. Also i am watching every video as it is good to learn.

    Love to know about treatments . We have been using frontline 2 months and still can’t get rid of them . I’m thinking they just keep picking them up on our daily walks as we live in SC where it’s hot and humid .

      Use an otc oral treatment like advantus or capstar. Personally I like advantus because it comes as a chewable and I don’t have to hide it in food and I feel like it’s safer to give daily longer than capstar but capstar has good reviews too so it’s up to you but for monthly supply I’d go with advantus since it goes well with topicals

    Hello Doctor,
    Thank you for taking the time to post this informative video. I recently moved from NJ to SW Florida and am getting what looks like either noseem or flea bits on my ankles and legs and sometimes on my arms back & chest. I have a Bichon and keep her hair short. She is an inside dog that goes out for walks about 5 times a day. We live in a condo community surrounded by dense woods & marsh lands where many people complain about mosquito and noseem bites. My dog has a good quality flea collar and I check my dog regularly for any traces of flees and so far and found nothing on her. The only things she chews from time to time is her lower legs by her paws either from occasional hot spots or insect bites from all the mosquitoes in the grass areas where I walk her. The mosquito bites I get usually go away in about 2 days, but these tiny noseem or flea bits last for about 2 weeks and itch terribly during that entire time. Is there a way to tell the difference between noseem and flea bits? I don't know what to think as I can't find any traces of actual fleas anywhere on the dog, in her beds or in the condo, but the bites on me look like flea bites. Any insight you can give?

      @@coachbrooksey3838 Its a shame that the veterinary doctor will post a nice video, but then will not answer anybody's questions.
      I've come to the conclusion that in my particular case these bites are the noseems and not flea bites. For the past several days I've been putting on long pants and thick socks when taking the dog for her walks and then taking off my shoes and putting my shorts on when I'm back in the house. During this time I have gotten no bites on my legs or ankles. If there were fleas on the dog or in my house I'm sure I would be getting bites in the house and I am not.

      So are you asking about yourself or you're asking for your dog?

    • @tkeeg
      @tkeeg Год назад

      @@DrLera I was asking for both the dog and myself. During close examination I can find no trace of any fleas or flea droppings on either the dog, her bedding nor anywhere in the house I have ruled out fleas. Noseems are a problem in SW Florida and their bites seem to present similar to flea bites. I only seem to get these bites when I am outside with uncovered legs & ankles so I can only assume that my bites are from noseems or possibly some type of flea living in the grass that is not affecting the dog. With all of your experience I sure that you may have a better insight on this.

      Go to a Medical Doctor for humans with this question. He is a veterinarian, and does not handle anything unless they are affecting your dog, and as you said, your dog is fine. So do not judge if you do not get an answer about bugs biting humans from a veterinarian.@@tkeeg

I really need to know so we can prevent this .are the dogs bringing them in even tho their treated

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  Год назад

      The flea prevention does not prevent the fleas from jumping on to the dogs it prevents them from living a long life because it requires them to usually touch the patient or drink the blood to adjust the poison so that's how I would assume your rabbit got fleas. They probably jumped on your rabbit before they got poisoned

      mix apple cider vinegar and water with 10 drops of an essential oil in a spray bottle and shake to mix. spray on dog avoiding eyes. it repels fleas and ticks. they dont like the smell. check out Karen Becker vet surgeon on you tube. she is amazing.
