- He was known as “King Rex” among fans of Kentucky basketball when he was only a teenager. Rex Chapman was one of the greatest prospects to ever come out of Kentucky; first starring at Apollo High School before spending two great season as a Kentucky Wildcat. He left school early at a time when it was almost unheard of for underclassmen to make the jump to the NBA. He would be a lottery pick by the expansion Charlotte Hornets and immediately had a lot of weight on his shoulders. He had games where he looked great and games where he looked lost, but overall was a solid player for the Hornets, but injuries began early in his career and would follow him everywhere he went. After the Hornets looked to move in another direction with Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill, Chapman was shipped to the Washington Bullets where he spent a few more injury riddled years alongside guys like Tom Gugliotta and Michael Adams. He spend a year in Miami, and while there would lead the Heat to a victory over the 72-10 Chicago Bulls on a night where he outplayed Michael Jordan. Then the remainder of his career was spent as a respectable starter on the Phoenix Suns with Kevin Johnson and then Jason Kidd. His body was breaking down, but he was playing through and after being introduced to painkillers, he was able get all the basketball he could out of his body, but the cost of this was a severe addiction that engulfed his life for over a decade after his retirement, he has re-invented himself now, but his NBA career gets little to no attention even though he could put up numbers even with all the injuries. He had a great shooting stroke for that era, and was a true athlete with a nearly 40 inch vertical. His shot selection and efficiency was his Achilles heel, but when you had confidence like Rex Chapman that’s the price you have to pay.

As a former Ohio State and NBA player, kudos to you on the story about the “Rex”ington Kentucky legend. A few years older than me, the greatness of Chapman started in high school and went parabolic as a freshman at Kentucky. Given where we are today racially (and progress has been made), this story is still in the back of my mind: Chapman took a lot of heat for dating a black female in college. Can I suggest Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He was another one of the drat picks of the great 1996 NBA Draft. Was an all star, and averaged 20 and 10 in his prime. Finished with career averages of 18 and 7. He was solid.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. I SO wanted Rex Chapman to be a Blazer! In 1991-92, I used to shoot Rex Chapman 3-Pointers, after i saw him hit 3's against the Lakers. Did you know that Portland could have had Chapman AND Kevin Garnett in the summer of 1995? Washington wanted to trade Rex Chapman and the #4 overall pick, for Rod Strickland (who was disgruntled in Portland) and the #19 pick. Portland needed a prime time shooting guard, having traded Clyde Drexler! Come on, I KNEW that Aaron McKie wouldn't pan out. Portland could have had a 16 ppg young shooting guard, AND picked Kevin Garnett or Rasheed Wallace with that #4 pick. Why didn't this happen? Portland was dead set on getting Calbert Cheaney and the #4 pick. True, Cheaney was a better player than Chapman (more dimensional). Portland also didn't want Don MacLean as part of the trade. I'm a die-hard Blazers fan, but Portland, you BLEW it in the summer of 1995.
It was really exciting to have Rex on the Suns, but he was always injured it seemed. I was unaware of his post NBA struggles. Hope he is doing better.
Yeah, he’s constantly reminded of it on Twitter with his takes. I remember that era in PHX when they ran a three guard rotation. If I’m not mistaken that’s when KJ switched to SG off the bench and shot 40% from outside.

Rex had legendary status in the south east. His rookie year with the Hornets I was at a game against Philly. Refs gave him a charge call vs Barkley in a late game moment. Rookies don’t usually get those calls. Great video.
We loved Rex in Phoenix. That shot he hit from deep as a prayer, was huge.

Bob Lanier is one you should do,he was one of the greatest players in Detroit Pistons history but were bad in the 70’s but did has success when he was traded to Milwaukee and got close to the finals twice in 83 and 84 but lost to Philly and Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals and is not part of the nba 75 greatest players, he wasn’t selected to the 50 year team back in 1997
And i believe he won an NBA 1 on 1 competition during the 70's. Remember very little about it, but it was on CBS.

Loved Rex Chapman. He’s overcome a lot. I saw him at Rupp Arena in 2008. It was the first time he’d been there in 20 years. It wasn’t brought up here, but he was treated pretty badly by a lot of people for dating a black girl. He was understandably bitter for years.

I was walking by the gym area one day and seen Rex dunk the ball during pratice. That was the first time I had ever witnessed a dunk by a high school player. I was a senior and he was a junior.
I remember watching the man play for ky back then , he was awesome. I never knew exactly what happened to him after the NBA but I still think he was one of the best during his time .

There were brief moments when you'd watch Rex and think he was the best player in the NBA. He was athletic, talented and could do it all. Unfortunately those moments were brief, but that doesn't mean Rex was a failure in the NBA. Rex made it to the NBA and had a long career which is the accolade and achievement that should be remembered.
In March of 98 , I saw Rex Chapman go 10-10 for 28 points in the first half with Kobe guarding him in LA 👀
If Rex had access to todays trainers, he could've stayed healthy, and imagine him playing in the 2010s!
Growing up in Memphis & Charlotte, I've had a lot of favorite players that didn't hit potential due to injuries: Penny, Grant Hill, McGrady, Larry Johnson...

Chapman was a damn good player with serious bounce. If I remember correctly, he had a 39 inch standing vertical leap. That'd equal well over 40 inches for a max. vertical. On another topic, how did we ever live without HD TV? 😂

Kelly Tapioca! I was born in Seattle in 1973, Sonics and Blazers fan! In 1990-91, Tripiocka was one of the players the Blazers looked at trading for. They should have gotten Tripuocka instead of Walter Davis. Tapioca shot 90% from the line, and his shooting needs no introduction!

he is the poster child for streakiness, and when he was on, he was unstoppable.......as a suns fan, i know all too well, that shot to beat the sonics had no business going in, but it did and if anyone could make that crazy shot, no doubt it was him

Im from pretty much the same town … I’ve ran into Rex a few times …. I seen him at the horse races before 🐎… he was bigger than life in Kentucky… he also originated a funny twitter game / post …. Called “block or charge” 😂 it was a riot , you could not guess which one it was ever … it’s called so inconsistently.

I was all in on Antonio McDyess! I got to see him play against UK and even though I was a kid I saw the complete package and a do it all F/C and had his knees and injuries not piled up,butI saw him as Karl Malone 2.0. Still have every Rookie card of him made but it didn't work out as I had planned. I thought if I got all the cards by the time he retired I could cash in but it didn't work. However my dad bought me boxes of cards every year from my birth year in 1980 all the way till he passes away in 2020 and it has allowed me to have better nest egg whenever I need cash. Thanks dad.

With a 43-inch vertical, not 39, he flew above almost everyone. I wish he was a Celtic back then. If Rex became more of a shooter and less of a dunker he would have extended his career. I get it when you can jump out of the building it's hard to stop. You can see that Chapman is getting older than he actually is right before our eyes. With a combination of stress and injuries Rex retired.
