The Wise Men, Baby Jesus, and … Baby Moses?

  • You've heard of baby Jesus begin visited by the Magi-wise men and astrologers from a faraway land who followed a star and came to worship the newborn king of the Jews.
But what we don't hear is how the author of Matthew's gospel makes connections between baby Jesus and the greatest prophet of the Old Testament: Moses.
Both of these men gave salvation to their people-and Mathew points out some similarities between their origin stories. But Matthew's story doesn't go the way an ancient Jew might expect …

Fantastic teaching! I'm 50 years old, raised in the church, never heard this parallel and didn't see it myself.
Something else came to mind as I was listening to you, Moses in a basket, Jesus in a manger. Moses raised in splendor and potentially becoming 'king of Egypt', Jesus raised in poverty became King of kings. I suppose you knew this already but I was so amazed by this, I had to share it.

Hi... I like the word parallel. I've always noticed the things humans come up with to try to explain our existence are parallel to the Bible. i.e. Humans study math and science and come to the conclusion that the universe came into existence in an instant from one source (the big bang) as if someone spoke it into being. I watch documentaries on the ice age, also areas that were once covered with ocean and think to myself what would be the climate change of the Earth if it was completely flooded and how long it would take to recede. Both parallel accounts of the creation and Noah's flood. Yet they give secular versions of their findings.

    Good explanation!
    It's called "typology"
The Old Testament prefigures the New, and the New Testament fulfills the the Old.
You can read the Old Testament and recognize parallel events in the New Testament.

The New (testament) is in the Old (testament) concealed, the Old is in the New revealed.

"...how the ancient Hebrews interacted with this really powerful being that they believed was dwelling among them on earth." You say "they believed", as if it might be questionable? What do you believe concerning the God, was His presence with them or not? Furthermore, HE was not just a "very powerful being", He was and is The All-Powerful Creator of the heavens and earth! The word for holy in Hebrew is “qadash,” which means to be sanctified, consecrated, and dedicated or to be separated from the world and worldliness. "So the people of Israel are supposed to be holy just like God is holy". This last sentence is your words and not our heavenly Father's. And here-in is where the sin problem began. Go back and read what God said to Adam and then read what Eve said to satan. She added a word, she changed a word, and she omitted a word at which point she no longer had God's word. Your statement about being holy just like God is holy is Not what He said. None of us are able to be "holy just like God is". Please start choosing your words and stop paraphrasing.

      1) I assume you meant to leave this comment on my Leviticus video? I don't see how this ties into a discussion of the Magi.
      2) All beliefs are questionable.
      3) I'm not sure what your quibble is with using "be holy, just like God is holy," unless you think that by some stretch I'm saying the people of Israel believed they were supposed to be equally holy as they believed their God to be. But that would be both silly for me to mean, and silly for anyone to assume. =)
