- Finnish Knitting Stories - Episode 85: Clue 2 of Westknits Geogradient MKAL & comfort cast-ons
Clue 2 of Geogradient MKAL, a bunch of new comfort cast-ons (mostly in Nutiden) & the wrap up of Happy Scrappy Blanket MAL.
EDIT: I was made aware that angina means something entirely different in English. I just assumed, as in Finnish it's called Angiina. The proper term in English is Pharyngitis. Sorry for the confusion! I learned something new today.

I love your geogrannientmkal 🩷
You always make lemonade out of lemons! Bravo.
I hope everyone stays healthy, that your knitting turns out perfectly and that you find some hidden chocolate to get you through the week! 😀🧶🍫💕
You definitely turned disappointment into beauty. Well done.
It is so amazing that The Stephen West drew inspiration from your unique modification. Great job. ❤️
Oh, my. I am now picking up mine and doing a granny square! I was totally gutted over the uproar and never saw the hate symbol-just a Dutch pinwheel!!! A small group ruined this for so many of us and especially Stephen! Your podcast healed my heart. God Bless you!❤
Please think of it as the small group making the mkal 'more interesting' creating love and caring for those who are perhaps hurting. Spread love ❤❤❤
Maybe this will make you smile ... My daughter turned 30, yes 30, on Friday and I knitted her the tiny chicken for her birthday after I saw your tiny chicken and I showed a picture of it to her. She was absolutely THRILLED with the the chicken! She got other presents too but the chicken is the one she loved best! Now she says she wants the frog too, ha ha ha! Hope your week ahead is better than the last one.
Tiny chicken stories are my absolute favourite! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️
The Clue 1 drama was painful, I was glad I wasn't participating this year. But seeing your geogranniet and now Stephen is crocheting, inspired by you?! Now I want to jump in. And I love how clue 2 fits perfectly with the crochet twist. What a resilient way to turn a bummer into something exciting! I hope this new week will be kind to you. Stay well Jana!
Oh girl, you sound just like me in this episode! Knitting is my happy place and I cannot stand how some folks want to bring big negative DRAMA into the happy space. I believe I know that Steven's heart is way to loving and inclusive for him to have put any awful symbology into his work. He's waaaay too kind for that! There are just some people that feel the "need" to find something to be outraged about for some reason. And, I'm right there with you on wanting the timeline back on Instagram!!!! I don't see half of what I actually want to see anymore because Instagram (a.k.a. Facebook) thinks they know better. Once upon a time I had stopped using FB so much because I preferred Instagram, then FB bought it and now I'm not liking Instagram so much anymore either. So sad.
Love that you used a granny square as a replacement! Beautiful!❤
I have been following the issues surrounding Mr. West's scarf and I find your solution creative and truly beautiful.
Very trendy with the granny square! And it goes well with clue 2.
Great podcast, as usual! Congratulations to the winners of the Happy Scrappy MAL. I want to say that your husband is a very wise man to tell you that you should do you when it came to your decision concerning the mystery shawl knit-a-long. You selected some happy colors and will love the end results, I'm sure. Praying that your son will have a speedy recovering as well.
Wow! Your shawl is beautiful ❤ You chose well to do a crochet granny square for Clue 1 as it complements nicely Clue 2 that has the knitted eyelets! Well done ❤
Dear Jana, what a week you have had, love in what you are knitting, wish I could give you a hug right now, sending healing, and positive vibes to you and your family, your way, love to your family and Jackie, keep positive, keep knitting xxx hugs xxx
Oh Jana, I hate to see you so upset. This world is a crazy and sometimes very cruel place. My wish for you is to hold on to the little "happiness nuggets" we're given. We love you and see you; your goodness always shines through. (Wishing the little ones health and happiness also.) 💞💞
hang in there Jana - I hope you DO have a calm weekend and no more challenges in the next week. I feel for you, and know what you mean about one small thing breaking the camels' back - we can only take so much! I hope your Knitting Mojo grows and becomes strong---you will need it for all of your upcoming projects! Sending wooly hugs to you!
Here you are once again brightening my day, being my precious knitting companion, ...may our prayers & good thoughts bring comfort & peace to your beautiful heart! 🥰❤️🧶
Big woolly hug to you and your little ones. Hope the infection gets better soon and you are able to get some good rest at night. My knitting is my mindfulness.. my quiet calm as my fingers get busy. In a book i am reading there is a quote hat I like to share " whichever road you are travelling, your knitting offers a greater capacity for observing life as its swooshes by" Hope it brings you joy and peace. Happy knitting
Loving your granny square, really beautiful! Thanks for the wooly hug and for all that you share! ❤
It is always a pleasure to watch you, even when/if you yourself feeling kind of under the ice❤ (I hope you and the little one didn’t catch anything 🤒)
I must say - what an marvellous idea to make a granny square in the shawl! I just love it🎉
Take care❤
Big hugs! Lotte

Elaine💖🍁🎃🏡🏡
Excellent representation of clue 1!! I love it. So colorful
You don’t “talk nonsense all the time,” as you said. You’re very articulate, well-spoken and express things in the best way they can be said. 🥰😉
I am sorry to hear about your sick kiddo and thed bird house. Hopefully this next week will be awesome for you. I love listening to you. You and Ruth Loves to Knit are my favoirite knitting creators. Thank you for spending this time with us!
I love what you did with the Clue one. Magical! It’s been such a heartbreak to Stephen. Turning disappointment to beauty. ❤❤❤
Thank you for the hug, I needed it! Here is one for you! 🤗
I wish you a calm and relaxing weekend, take care of yourself. Love your granny square shawl, those beautiful socks to be. Feel hugged.
Thankyou so much for taking the time to share with us when you are so pushed. I really appreciate it. Georgeous projects. hope things get easier soon xx
I love your granny square. Looks great. I’m not happy either on how Stephen was treated, he’s a good soul, unfortunately there are cruel people out there that have to have constant drama. It’s best to just consider the source, put it away on a shelf (in your mind) & not give it anymore thought. Just remember you can’t change people & the way they think or the cruel things they do. We’re important in ourselves. So hang in there girl all of our thoughts are with you & your family. Hope you little boy is well soon & Sophia or you or your husband don’t get it.
Sorry, such a long ramble. Take care of yourself. One of your many friends.
Great idea turning clue 1 into a granny square. Hope your son is feeling better.
Thx for the hug 🤗 hug back to you all ❤
Your "Geogrannient" shawl is absolutely beautiful, and your granny square centre is a perfect solution to the controversy over the original clue. I have to say that I loved seeing the original clue 1, and I think that it is a shame that some people ruined this MKAL with their negativity. I believe that sometimes some people try very hard to find something to complain about, and it is sad that this has put some people off from continuing with this shawl. I think your colours are gorgeous, and also the ones that you are using in your Pressed Flowers Socks.
I could use a hug! And give one too! Thanks for being there.
Years ago lots of major things were happening in the world in in my life which were very upsetting but the thing that made we weep great big tears was my grandson breaking my favourite cereal bowl! Definitely the straw that broke the camel's back. I hope you and your family have a better week. Sending you woolly hugs from England.
Jana, sorry you've had a stressful week, with your son being so sick, and bad weather to deal with! Glad hubby was firm and got his son in to see the Doctor! 🎉Maybe you can plant a dwarf fruit tree to replace the dead one ! You Granny Square center of the SW MAL is just the perfect thing! It beautiful and looks great. Almost inspired me to jump in and start the shawl....I just have too many things on needles to finish! I enjoy watching your lovely shawl's progress ! Take care, get some rest...so you don't get run down and get sick!!💝🦋
Huging you back from Norway. I hope you got your calm, relaxing weekend and a good night's sleep and you are feeling better. Keep on knitting, Jana.
Those fox earrings are fantastic!! And I love your granny squarer Clue 1. Now that I have gone through the astonishment, exasperation, sadness, and loss of the original clue 1, I am thinking that I will not continue. I will definitely enjoy watching yours grow. And I have other WIPs that want my attention and "real world' drama, right? Sending hugs to you and the family! Get some rest and I hope you enjoy your weekend!
Hello Jana! Totally agree with you, knitting is our refuge in this crazy world and help keeping our child’s heart! I think you need one of these old manual coffee grinder! 😉 Thank you and wooly hug!!😘
Thank you Jana for your podcast, I enjoy spending my time watching you knit and listening to you chat 😄 I hope you have a better week 💕
Thank you for bringing some light and joy at the end of a very stressful week. Your warmth travels through your podcasts. The center square you created is just beautiful. I’m sure your geogradient will be amazing. Sending hugs back to you. Hope your next week is much less stressful and everyone is doing better.
Hello Jana, i wish you very good week and try to don't care about the people you can not be kind to other ones! Wooly hugs and see you next time! Many greetings from Germany ❤
I hope that this coming week will be better. I can see it in your eyes that you were not your chipper self. It is devastating to have your happy space of knitting trampled by the events, but I am glad that that majority of people have moved on and away from it all.
I have a feeling that the black/brown with hints of purple "hug" will be ready by the next vlog - dreaded seaming included. 😉 It looks like just want you need to lighten your mood.
I hope that your son will be better soon and that no one else in the family gets sick.
Thank you for the weekly "session" Dr. Jana. 😊❤
Your work is beautiful! I also knit for my sanity, and like you I was also reminded of the episode of Friends with Ross' sofa 🤣 I'm so glad I found your podcast: you are truly a breath of fresh air 🩷🩷🩷🩷
Thanks Jana, the se days are complicated, carry on. A big hug to you 🤗
Your podcasts brighten so many gloomy days. Sending hugs to you ❤❤❤❤
Great job with continuing with the MKAL. ❤I’m sorry you had a rough week. I understand them. We definitely need our knitting, crocheting, crafting to keep us sane!!! I’m sending you a big hug 🤗 too!!! 🥰🥰
I just love your podcast❤. I myself am a mother of four children, each of whom is on the autistic spectrum. So when you say that knitting is what keeps you sane, I understand you 100%. And it feels so good to know that I'm not alone in this jungle of different visits to doctors and therapists all the time so that the children get the help they need. Many hugs from a tiny podcaster from Sweden❤
Jana, sending you a woolly hug.
Please take care & keep your knitting time that brings joy, calm & peace. The world is in turbulence & we all need to be strong & care for one another life is very precious & we need to live every moment to the best we can. Hugs from San Francisco Bay Area California USA
I absolutely adore your Grannient! That was a perfect way to resolve that for yourself. ☺️
Sending you a big hug. I have had frustrating times as well over the years, tell myself “this too shall pass”. It does get better, but there is always these trials and frustrations because we are human. Prayers for peace for you 🙏🏻
Fabulous..again even when you struggling you are inspiring others. Big hugs ....mojosockalicious time I am casting on yoga socks in finnush tuku wool 421..First time used it❤❤
Your West shawl is looking beautiful. I was very happy to be here today. Thank you for another video. Just keep going, you would be missed if you decided to stop recording. The world needs nice.
Lots of hugs back from South Dakota. Hang in there spring is coming. I have ordered the moomin books for myself because you were so joyful about them. I also got the purple/blueberry moomin coffee cup for me. Yea! I'm always happy to sit and have coffee and listen to you chat. Thank you for being just who you are. Love your podcasts
Hi Jana, beautiful podcast as always...praying for you , hope your son and daughter feel much better soon. Take care
Love your Geogrannient shawl 🩷. Knitting is my happy place too 🤗
Sending hugs and kisses to cheer you up. God bless you and your family 😚😚😚😚
It is super that your a continuing the Mkal. Yes you are are an inspiration Jana. I trust your son will better soon. Also that your daughter will sleep peacefully at night. Heippa ❤❤❤❤
Hoping your week ended with some peace. Hang in their friend💐
Love your beautiful happy pink granny-gradient! And I saw that you have inspired Stephen himself! That just have lifted your spirits a bit. WOW 🤩!! I hope your sine feels better very soon. I have a little rule to go by, I ask myself, if there anything I can personally do about this problem in the world? If there is, I try and do it, if there isn't, I try and just turn it over to my Heavenly Father and move forward. You got this! Hang in there. Things around the world are sad. But you have your own little world to take care of. Stay positive. You are a highlight and an uplift to many! Sending love! ❤
Hope your kiddos get and stay healthy. And you are right. The world is crazy. I am right there with you
Thanks again for your podcast Jana. I didn’t knit Stephen’s MKAL - but I saw plenty hateful comments on Ravelry about him and the pattern. Haters hate. Wishing you and the family health, wealth and happiness. 😊
Best wishes with a warm hug to you. Thanks for your effort. Always glad to see you.
I know what you mean about things piling up and the one little thing at the end puts you over the edge. The world is pretty crazy right now. I had to laugh a little bit when you said you found some already ground coffee during your power outage. We lost power a month ago and had the same issue. Gas stove worked. We could boil water for coffee. We did find enough ground coffee for one pot and were thinking of mortar and pestle or putting beans in a bag and then using a hammer. We came up with all kinds of creative ideas but the power came back on before the next morning. So grinding coffee is now on our list of preparations if they are predicting a big storm! Keep knitting! I hope your week gets better! Love from Virginia, USA
The pressed flowers socks are so pretty. I loved the pale colours.
I wolly hug back at you! Thank you for sharing although the feelings are outside your skin.
My goodness, yours is beautiful! I love your colours, and the granny square. I also did a granny square, but I did the entire clue 1 as a granny. Clue 2 ties in very well with the texture of the granny.
Jana, I'm so sorry you had such a bad week. Keep your chin up. Put some sun on your face and remember how lucky you are to have a wonderful family. The issue with Steven West's pattern are so insignificant in the scheme of things. I'm glad you moved forward and created your own clue 1. Take care.
Suzanne
Hope the children get better poor wee souls
I just discovered you (I've obviously been living under a rock!) and loved this. I hope life is kinder to you this week. Totally agree with you about Ravelry. It's like a pack of wolves over there sometimes. I can't wait to see your new cardigan grow. x
Thank you and welcome to my forest corner! ❤️
Hello Jana 🤗 and ❤ to you. I love your GeoGradient , socks, Garter Marler and congratulations winners! Love your fox shirt! 🙏 for our world 😢 yes That's all and that's it 😂. 🇺🇦 🇮🇱 🙏 🙏 🙏. I hope your baby feels better, it's hard when they are sick.
Oooo, love your SW shawl! So pretty! I agree with you, knitting should be fun and all about your joy! I watch your podcast because you are cheerful, and real!❤😂
I also knitted your little chicken! I displayed it and my grandson saw it and pinched it! He loves it so much! It now lives a long ways away, but brings him joy!!❤❤❤
Oh, that's a sweet story! Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Sending love and hugs to you Jana xxx
I love your granny square & your colors. ❤❤❤
It was good to see you today! Sorry your son is sick! Hope and pray he heals quickly and no one else gets it!!
Have a great week!!
Thank you for sharing your knitting adventure, you are one amazing lady, big hug to you :)
Sending hugs and much love from Michigan USA.
Here’s a huge hug from Nth QLD Aust for you my dear ❤
Yeah, I just saw a pinwheel. Quilters will be lost if that is now taboo 🙄 Crazy world.
Sending hugs from Chicago IL USA.
Oh dear, the life of a Mom is never completely easy...I imagine your Virgo empathetic nature takes on the burden and worry of what ails your children :( Thank God (I sense) your husband is a pillar of strength and understanding with/for you...I'm telepathically sending a BIG HUG your way; I'm a mom of adult daughters but I still worry for them and the grandchildren too...not very productive I know, so I knit for them to show my love. You'll love this; I'm cat-sitting and brushing their kitty, Buddy, to add fur to the roving wool-fill to stuff a baby owl I'm knitting for my 10 yr. old granddaughter's birthday that she requested LOL...crazy fun!!! Yeah don't let the Beetches get to you ! Love ya
Love the colours of your Geogrannient shawl. It’s so pretty. Big hugs to you. Some weeks are hard. I hope your kids get better soon. Knitting is my happy place. It helped keep me a little bit sane after our son died. Keep knitting - it does help 😊
I'm so sorry for your loss! ❤️
Sending woolly hugs from Oxford ❤
Sending hugs 💞💞💞💞 hope your difficult times go soon. We’ve had a difficult time this last week too. Maybe it’s something in the air 🌪️🌩️🌧️⛈️💖💖💖💓💗💖
You are such a lovely creative knitter thanks for podcasting wooly hugs from Istanbul❤
You turned your geogrannient into something beautiful and unique ❤ we crafters understand you so mucj it was a hard week but you pulled though Jana. Kudos. I also have times when good sleep is very hard to havem i hope your son will get.better soon.
My favorite Geogradient I've seen! Beautiful ◡̈
Sending you love, hugs, positivity ❤❤❤
I love your Geogrannient MKAL and the colours certainly look wonderful. I don’t use IG nor FB (for a few years now) as it became too political for me.. my craft is for me to enjoy and to take my mind off of the stresses in my life. Keep picking up your needles and yarn. Knit with colour and overcome the darkness of the shadows . I hope your son gets better soon. 🐨🦘👋🏻
❤oh! I just get so much inspiration from you! A project of crochet and knitting is just what I needed to keep going on the gradient! And ... think i will cast on the garter cardigan and use my handspun scraps. And focus on compassion and gratitude toward Stephen and his unique designing talent😊. Just needed your colors inspiration to pep me up! Keep it fun, pivot😂!
Oh Jana! You need a hug too! The world has gone crazy. I hope it settles down a little for you and that you can find some peace and sleep!
I'm waiting for you to have a good week ❤
I’m so grateful for you! I get what you mean about knitting being your happy place - it is for me, too. I appreciate that you are willing to be vulnerable and real about when life is not going so smoothly, as it helps me to know this craft helps others the way it does me.
I love your clue 1 result, especially with clue 2. It looks so pretty! I wasn't too keen on the outcome of the original clue 1 so glad you 'did you'.
hello from South Korea 😊 ! I wish the best for your all things going in your life ! I agree that knitting helps us to be in Happy Place ..
you are such a beautiful knitter who inspires so many people :) I love watching your episodes ! Thank you :)
I hope that things get better very soon for you. Wow, your Geogrannyent is stunning, the spaces in the granny square Centre compliment so well with the eyelets in clue 2. No one could have planned it better. Sending positive thoughts your way
I’ve knit the Pressed Flowers pattern in a modified shawl into a cowl for myself and loved the mosaic knitting…the sock pattern is tempting….you are a great enabler! ….lol
My goodness, I had to look up what the drama was about as I can’t stand Instagram or FB and try to stay off of them. The forums on Ravelry aren’t much better. Hard to believe someone went after Stephen West who is like a ray of sunshine in this crazy world. He handled this flawlessly-but it is a shame he had to. I stopped using IG following all of the drama when a crazy mob went after another woman a few years back for what they perceived as insensitive remarks and then piled on anyone who tried to defend her. The crime? She called India “colorful”. People need to grow up. If I picked up a sword to do battle every time someone offended me, real or imagined, I would have no time for knitting! I do love your shawl and your podcast. You have such a happy spirit and I love your style. Ignore the madness.
Your Grammient Shawl is really pretty. The colors make it. This year’s shawl looks like a hap. I started it then decided to spend my time elsewhere…Good job. Can’t wait to see how yours comes out!
