Given the 28mm equivalent lens, a head and upper torso portrait, or closer, is going to produce obvious facial distortion, which is apparent in some of the video photos. For street photography, the early 1980's GS645W (no rangefinder or auto exposure) is smaller, lighter and works very well for that type of subject. It's relative disadvantage for some people is the its 45mm lens has a maximum aperture of 5.6, compared to 4.0 for this auto version. At used prices today, the two version are similar cost for like condition, with the GA version being 10-20& more..
Omg thank you soo much been debating if I wanted to go for the wide or the zoom but it seems like nobody uses the wide for portraits only landscapey stuff. So it made it super hard to see if i could use the wide for what I shoot lol But you sold it for me I’m def going the wide!
I have the 60mm version of this. One of my favourite ever cameras! The lens is just stupidly sharp and it's so easy to carry around with you. It doesn't have the nifty front facing shutter button, though. I think that's the only difference... damnit I'm gonna have to get the wide angle version too :-)
I bought one of these when I was in Japan as a P&S alternative to my Mamiya RB and I absolutely loved the photos I got from it! But.. I hated using it. The camera is well designed (not perfect but pretty great) but I couldn’t get used to the range finder vibe.. shot way too many frames with the cap on. I ended up trading it for a Pentax 645 and definitely gained a lot more enjoyment from it, I just had to sacrifice all the benefits of a point and shoot *le sigh*
I just got my GA645W (no i) today. It's HUGE, but much lighter than my Mamiyaflex C22. Fortunately the seller included the GA bracket, It makes holding the camera very easy. I shot my first roll of film today and the camera is everything I could have hoped for in a camera that I use. I call myself an Opportunity Photographer. I don't plan. I respond. This camera can do that.
Yes! So much lighter than any of the Mamiya C line for sure. Glad you’re enjoying it so far! Here’s hoping many opportunities for good photos come your way!
Just doing research on these cameras because I want to dip my toe into medium format but don’t know if I’m ready for the big boy cameras and I mostly shoot film when travelling.
Great video. Loved the editing. If you can, could you make a video about the Fujifilm X100V. I'm thinking about getting it but I think I will regret going with a fixed lens system. Just want a jack of all trades camera for (ik it's not possible but it's pretty close to it) for landscape, holidays and portraits.
Muk Bar I’d be happy to review it if I can get my hands on it! But from what I’ve seen it’s great at all those things. Might consider an older version tho as they are muuuuuuch cheaper. Or a film camera :)
I use one of these for social landscape shots. I tend to overexpose 1/2 or 1 stops. The pictures come out beautiful. I sometimes think do I need to do this work on medium format? There's something magical about this camera. I dread the electronics dying.
Hi, it looks like your video series came to an abrupt stop. This is a shame, I'm very new to photography and even newer to film photography. I'm in my 40's and have spent a lifetime carelessly shooting on auto. But now that I am absorbing everything that I can, I have found videos like these to be useful, often for the indirect points that you make. Shots of you using the cameras and your descriptions of how you go about that give indirect lessons that have been immensely valuable. So first, thank you for what you have already produced. Secondly, I hope that even if it turns out to be one video a year, you do return somewhat to making some more.
Hello, thank’s for the video, What is the minimum distance of focusing? If you have to choose betwen this and one with the 60 which one you prefer for every day picture?
geoffrey baptiste thank you very much! Probably my website is best: taylornoelphotography.com But you can find me on insta too- though I’m just restarting posting on there. @taylordthegreat
Hmmm maybe there’s something I don’t know about the camera, but as far as I know there’s no way to toggle between different AF types. 🤷♂️ is there something I missed?
Taylor Noel there is no toggle between af modes from a menu. But if you cover the clear parts of the af box, leaving the circular boxes on the edge clear, you will force the camera to use phase detect only, which is good between 0.7m-2.5m. Than you can manually focus to 3 5 10m as its easy to judge these distances . This has been quite reliable for me and fits the style I shoot. But maybe my contrast detect is not working properly :) it sometimes focuses to closer distances when it is clearly 10m, which is annoying.
Taylor. I’m loving your stuff. I’m in queens ny. We should work together and make some videos and photo walks together. Feel free to hit me up on ig @ryanjleone
Ryan! I’d love to chill sometime when I’m back! We’re in AZ till next year tho... all of kendras classes are online so 🤷♂️ But once I’m back, very down.
Taylor Noel where in Arizona are you. I lived there for 2 years. Great photo spots! But yes. Let’s connect maybe on ig! Then we can figure something out. @Ryanjleone

Thank you for saying portrait & landscape orientation - for some reason it drives me nuts when people call it horizontal and vertical!

Totally brilliant, thanks!
Superb video. Well done sir!
*Mamiya 7ii. Full 6x7cm Medium Format, interchangeable quality lenses and compact.* have you tried it?
Maybe not, because it's ridiculosly expensive to buy, not even counting the lenses.
hi Taylor.. there is difference quality result vs Fuji GA645?
COME THE F*** BACK AND MAKE YT CONTENT EVEN IF IT RUINS YOUR PERSONAL LIFE omfg love your videos
this video is a beautiful beast

Here ya go!

This would be a perfect camera except for the ridiculous choice to reverse orientations in the viewfinder.

Is it true that it focuses better when you take contrast autofocus offline?
