I'm blown away by this video. Best photographic content I've seen in a while.
Some opinions:
- Amazing music
- Amazing shots
- LOVED many of the shots in terms of colors
- Some images too yellowish (5:51, 5:55, 7:13), and I prefer the colors of images like 7:21 and many others.
- Man, even just the first images like 5:40 just blew me out of the water, and are much preferred to your colleagues digital work. Also in terms of having a 'restful' images. It just feels nurturing.

@@popularbehaviour I'm gonna rephrase my comment and say that this is one of the best videos on photography I've ever seen. Just to get my point across.
I do think the professional environment had something to do with it. It gives a legitimacy to your voice in a space where there are so many, and where we've seen enough pictures of neighbourhood cars, basketball hoops and abandoned gas stations.
But everything is just so clean and beautiful. Can't believe you are only at 500 subs, and I think that number will change rapidly.
Easily the best video and photos I've seen someone create with this camera without crying about the auto-focus. You smoked the R3 my friend. Well done!

I see much more art director in your analog work . Your shots are more artistic and personal than the pro one with some other camera . To my opinion , you beat R3 big time . Commercial or not , I like a lot your take on the portraits .

There is something addictive about the effortless detail and tonality of medium format color negative film images. Digital can get really close but makes you work the files hard for it. As for flash diffusion, run-and-gun style, I have really cheap collapsible “softbox” that velcros onto the flash head. Gives a bigger, softer light source. But honestly, I’d put more effort into getting the flash off-camera than softening the light.
That might be the next step for me. I want to get into off camera flash with a Mamiya 7 next so any tips/reccos appreciated.
Every second of this video pulled me in. I've had the impetus to buy a film camera to try and re-kindle something I've lost. Medium format has always stuck in my mind as the 'holy grail'. I'll be deep diving into the Fuji GA645 rabbit hole.

645 is my favorite mf format. I was strongly considering Fujifilm’s GS and GA series but after seeing and handling a buddy’s Bronica RF645, I was sold. But sometimes I wish I had the GA’s automation.
The Bronica is a beautiful camera, definitely love to try one.
less commercially viable, maybe, but some of them were *still* commercially viable! Especially after you added the flash and diffuser, the photos really came alive.
The difference between a photographer and an art director is down to degrees of expertise in each other's fields. You have to be something of both, whichever role you play, and the eye is the most important thing.
(That shot with the raquet framing the other model was great.)
Great video! When it comes to using a speed light with film you can see if Fuji ever made a TTL speed light for their film cameras but if not then I'd recommend picking up a Nikon sb 24, 25, or even an 800 since they all have a small light sensor for auto shooting on any camera. You just sync the settings on your camera to the flash. The sb 24 and 25 can be found for dirt cheap and are from Nikon's film era. The sb 800 was made for their DSLRs and is fantastic so someone you know might already own one of those.

@@popularbehaviour love the vid (watched it twice). Wonder how do you compensate for the flash diffuser (and you pointed the flash to the sky I think? without the ceiling/as you are outdoor, how would that count?
@@ak74555 Apparently the Gary Fong Diffuser works the same way a lamp shade does. The Flash is pointing up and when it fires, the rings in the diffuser distribute the light evenly outward. I'm keen to learn more and try some different diffusers too.

Just came across this randomly and damn, I want a film camera now 😆 Can you speak to your post-process workflow. Do you edit the photos or are they straight out of camera? Nonetheless, beautiful photos and thanks for sharing. Look forward to seeing more of your work
Thanks for the comment! For post process I simply adjust the RGB values in Lightroom as outlined in this video from @davidherring this really makes a huge difference with lab scans. Thanks for the comment! Lens is fixed on the Fuji GA645 and mine is 60mm f 4.0. There’s a wide version out there at 45mm and the GA645Zi has a zoom lens 55-90mm.
I recently shot a merch campaign on film and I have to agree that the commercial viability of some photos wasn’t as strong as the digital backups I took. The film photos have more atmosphere, especially the flash photos and ones with strong directional lighting, but they tended to misrepresent the tones and colours of what the clothes actually looked like to a point. An intriguing exercise, and I thought it mirrored your experience here. Love the photos 😙 keep up the good work! I’d love to see more stuff with the Fuji and strong flash.

Thanks for that! I'm hoping videos like these provide useful information. Shooting film is so much fun but every shot counts so any shared knowledge can hopefully help! You're right atmosphere vs accuracy in colours for product. So much to think about, more to follow!

Thank you so much for this comment! These rolls of Kodak Portra 400 were developed and scanned by Rocket Repro here in Vancouver and they use a Fuji SP2000 scanner.

Great video. Did you try to shoot with the pop up flash? I’d be curious to see how it compares to your other flash photos.
I didn't use the built in pop up flash on this shoot but have used it in the past. It's a great option to have but seems to be best suited for those Terry Richardson style party pics.
Having said that, you could get creative and figure out a little diffuser for it!

Great video. Really like the back history of the camera from a journalist perspective. Recommend you increasing the volume of your voice over. It was often heard to hear you over the louder music.

I only used digital during the pandemic. My local lab closed during the pandemic.
Did they close for good?
@@popularbehaviour they only closed for a few months until the city allowed them to reopen. I think they ended up reconfiguring the store to isolate people and job functions from each other. Then they had a limit for a bit. They are a used camera store and lab. I think they got more business when they reopened. They did have to raise their prices.
@@bngr_bngr I’m still amazed we have as many operating film photo labs as we do. I asked ABC Photolab here in Vancouver about their business which is currently enjoying renewed interest in film, they said the majority of work that has kept them in business over the years has been school photographs.
@@popularbehaviour yet the price point for film and film processing has just gotten ridiculous. My nieces catholic school charges $1000 extra for photography classes.

If you want more control, and you like the 645 format, look at Mamiya, or Pentax. Full manual, and total control. I would advise you to stay away from 4x5. It is Uber addictive!!!

What was your focus hit rate? I have this camera and it is sometimes off on focus
On this day I think I hit about 85% in focus

you got some really great stuff out of this camera man! i have a ga645zi that i thought i would love, and i still think it is a great camera, but i reeeally dont like using it. ive realized since buying it that im never going to be someone who owns multiple MF cameras, and if i want to shoot MF i want control and a more thoughtful shooting experience. if i want point and shoot ill rock a 35mm. so if anyone wants a 645zi for a solid deal HMU!
also, and this is a massive pointless petty nitpick, the r3 isnt a digital SLR, its a mirrorless.
anyway youve earned my sub! cool to see someone making professional work (ik you arent a pro photographer but still) talking about their photography from a hobbyist perspective

Here's the problem with that camera.... I've tried two of them. The first time, i bought a used one, 'tested' it to be sure it was working, and then took it on a three-week trip to Brazil. Well, the test to confirm it was working just wasn't stringent enough. Turns out, the autofocus was not operating entirely properly. The test results were just fooled by depth of field. My actual results were poor. Mostly soft. And because it's an AF *rangefinder* camera, you never have any idea if the focus calibration is accurate until *after you've paid hundreds of dollars to process your film and lost three weeks of opportunities.*
This was long ago, so i may be sketchy on the rest of the details, but i believe i tried to have the AF calibrated by an authorized service center. I think i did this, and then sold the camera. Not because the calibration was not successful, but because i would never have confidence in that camera again. I don't know what put it out of calibration, but i grew paranoid about the vibrations associated with 13 hour plane rides.... Sad, as i had very happily used other AF rangefinders like multiple Contax G2s. I think i tried a second GA645 at some point and it had the same issue. Probably not a big deal if you shoot in bright daylight and with smaller apertures, but this was during my 'bokeh phase,' and even now i'm not an "f16 and forget it" kinda guy....
Anyway, that's my caveat. Lovely video, though.

@@popularbehaviour Right, bad luck, for sure, but if memory serves, when i was active on the photography forums at that time ~12+ years ago(?), mine wasn't a completely unique experience with that camera. And, again/to clarify-it's not that i have concerns about vintage electronics. I owned just about every medium format camera model and every brand of 35mm camera except Olympus, and most were bought used. I didn't have problems with electronics on any of them. Mechanical/shutter issues with two different Pentax LXs and a Leica R-something, but no AF or electronics problems aside from those two Fujis. I vowed not to buy another AF rangefinder, because, as i said, when you have a problem, that's the type of camera where you don't know you have a problem until it's far too late. Best of luck with yours. I might suggest if you use it for any critical/professional work that you test it regularly.
@@CentaurusRelax314 that’s good intel, I wonder if there are known issues with certain batches of production? I remember learning that early serial numbered Leica R8s had some issues.
@@popularbehaviour I'm pretty sure i never read/knew about specific production runs with the Fuji. And i don't remember that with the R8, either. I had an R8 and it was quite wonderful. Funny (to me): the first time i ever saw an R8 in person was in the Leica shop in NYC. A pro photojournalist brought a set of them and was shopping for a lens. I looked at it and almost laughed aloud. I asked him why he liked them, as i thought they looked just ridiculous. He said it was about the glass, and that the bodies themselves only looked odd. About a month later, i held one for the first time in a different shop, and bought one a week later. Crazy design, but quite nice in the hand. Back to the point-no, i think my Leica-R shutter issues were with an R5 or 6(?). It wasn't that the camera didn't work. It was that the shutter felt 'sluggish' somehow. I don't remember the specifics, but it was something like it just felt like the mirror was slow to return, making the whole experience feel not very responsive or precise. The Pentax LXs, though, that was a matter of the mirror actually getting stuck at the top and not returning at all. Two different mint samples. Which sucked, as i had bought the famous 50mm/1.4 Takumar and really was excited to use it. Fast forward and it has been about 7 years that i've had that lens in my bag and i've still never taken a shot with it!
Turn the music down in the mix. So you don't have to shout while talking.

Don't waste your time, go straight to the Zi. Fixed lens cameras are too limiting.
