Shirley's chest voice and coordination are brutal. She exemplifies a true vocalist.
True

She's releasing another album this November in her early 80s!! She's truly deserving of her title as Dame Shirley Bassey.
The work in this video is insane btw. Well done!
Thank you very much! I'll probably do a vocal showcase for that album.

There's finally a vocal range video of her!!!! I've been waiting for this! She is an amazing and underrated vocalist!!!
i don't like her. her singing style is boring and same all songs
Underrated by who ? Which bunch of nowadays insignificant ignorants ? Bassey is/was not at all underrated. She is/was the grande dame of British music hall. One of the most sought after vocalists of the past century. One of the top three international headliners in her field ( like Liza Minnelli and Dionne Warwick , in the absence of Streisand who wasn't touring in those years, much to her fans dismay). If you were old enough to be , say, a child of the 70's , you'd be aware of that. Even in those days , there weren't that many great female international superstars vocalists and Bassey of course counted among them.
Such a beautiful instrument from top to bottom. Love how thick her voice is throughout most of her range. Great work on the video.
That concert with the orange gown was amazing through out.
her Eb5's specially in her first years is amazing 😭 i just blessed with her voice

What minute is the song “Diamonds are forever”?
Is there any record of Shirley singing unmiked? I know it wasn’t common when she started, but it’s hard to get an idea of the size (or general projection) of her voice compared to others for me. Ethel sang unmiked for decades. Judy is on record doing it. I’m sure Kate Smith did, too. I have no doubt Shirley could, too, but I’m curious as to how she would have faired against Broadway orchestras. Love Bassey, but she’s hard for me to sort. Undeniable talent and skill, though.
There is a clip of her in the 1990s singing at Carnegie Hall where there’s no digital amplification as it’s just an informal rehearsal. Sounds massive there.
Shirley Bassey has a powerful contralto voice, her range is (B2-G♯5-C6); Mariah is a soprano, her range is different. Voices should not be compared. Just enjoy the talent , don’t argue upon these things.
Shirley was not only classified as a soprano by her vocal coach but it is very clear if one listens to her voice. And Bassey and contralto have nothing in common.
for pseudo RUclips coaches, Shirley clearly has a neck vein when she belts...because BELTING IS A COORDINATION CHEST SOUND
Also people have to realise that veins showing up are the sign of pressure and intensity (not constriction) and chest voice IS an intense sound. It is full-bodied.
@@KajiVocals THANK YOU! The misinformation on the platform is mindblogging.. The big sound of Shirley is just crazy

@@KajiVocals thank you for replying. After a lot of searching on youtube, I found the full show. It was in 1968.
Could you do jojo the singer vocal range video because I feel that other videos don’t accurately show her range properly.
@Aaro Tähtivuori She's not a mezzo.
@Aaro Tähtivuori Very bright voice with actually a pretty high tessitura. The way she uses an edge belt (it's a form of belting) up to F5 shows her tessitura. She's also capable of singing in the zona di passaggio at literally speech volume. And the territory I'm speaking of here is above the mezzo territory. She is a soprano who learned how to sing low, but her lower range is still not that special. I can name plenty of sopranos with way stronger lows. And I can also link classical sopranos (even coloraturas and lyric sopranos) who literally sound like tenors when singing in their chest voice. Also another thing is - Jojo considers herself a soprano (she recently was asked about it on her Instagram livestream) and her mother also called her a soprano. Her vocal coach Stevie also calls her a soprano.
@@KajiVocals yep. what's an edge belt?
@@kevindurbin7412 Look up CVT and then the edge mode.
@Aaro Tähtivuori Well, the 'RUclips vocal community' misuses very simple vocal terms quite sadly. I wouldn't say it's right in most of the claims they have. Most teachers would disagree with what all of the 'educational' videos by people like MrSkinnyJeanz say. It's quite frankly misinformation. Also, regarding the F4 and F#4 bit - most pop singers quite frankly have underdeveloped chest voices. If you want to hear the potential of soprano middle range, listen to people like Maria Callas in opera. She's one of the most famous coloraturas and her chest voice is massive - for example in this - ruclips.net/video/7Xws7wKuc4w/видео.html. If you want a light high soprano doing the same - ruclips.net/video/6t365da96z4/видео.html. In general, people on RUclips have very weird standards and base voice types on stuff like 'having ease on G5 belts' which is ridiculous, as literally not a single adult will have ease up there BELTING. And none of them are wary of technique used. For example with Christina, they don't base her voice type off how she sings with the coordination she does, they just see that she's struggling around a certain area. There are a ton of things that people have to look at to classify someone.

Huge mezzo voice. I just wish she hadn't shaded Ms. Tina Turner the way she did, who actually had a HUGE range lol.
Wasn't always a mezzo. And in this case it's not a speculation. She was actually classified by her teachers as a soprano in her youth. She became more of a mezzo in the 1980s. And her voice as a mezzo is still a high bright mezzo. Don't let the tongue retraction fool you.

@@xtinafan06 I think Shirley is from a tradition where you belt out the climax with a big weighty note and felt that Tina's light heady note was a poor choice
16:48
How do you develop a huge sound like hers? If Whitney used her technique, would she sound just as big?
Shirley is a mezzo soprano whereas Whitney was a full soprano. Mezzo-soprano singers are very dominant with their lower and mid ranges in terms of depth and audibility. It should go without saying that the sheer volume of Whitney's impressive mid-range won't overpower the volume of impressive Shirley's mid-range. For a soprano, Whitney definitely developed her mid-range masterfully and used it to great advantage too.
Shirley was classified as a soprano by her teacher in the 60s-70s.
If you watch Shirley there are some clues. Also Whitney and Shirley share similar technique, in places. The most obvious is the way Shirley uses her mouth, tongue retraction, clarity of voice and calling out nature of her sound

It says in your description that Shirley is one of the most 'underrated and talented vocalists' singers ... really, what absolute rubbish. I've been a fan of hers since I was a kid in the 60s and she certainly has never ever been underrated. I've seen her live and she is electrifying. She has been hugely famous and successful since the 1950s and has a huge fan base, and still has. If she were to announce a concert at an arena even now, she would be a sell out. Underrated, she has never ever been. How about looking at the many very 'overrated' singers we have nowadays (and I use the term singer very loosely in most cases).
These terms have multiple meanings. She has been underrated by modern media and doesn’t get the attention she deserves. And she is underrated as a VOCALIST. My channel is targeted at the voice community, most of whom are IGNORANT to her skill. It isn’t rubbish. Simple truth. You can see even in the comments how many people are surprised by things she does in this video.
@@KajiVocals ... Ok, I think we need to agree to disagree here. Have a good day.

Although Dame Shirley Bassey is in the Guinness Book of World records (2000) for being the largest selling female singer from the United Kingdom (approx 135 Million Records sold), and has had records on the UK charts for over 305 weeks (More than Elvis), she is still considered underrated from this point of view. Check the sites that list the best female vocalists of all time! Shirley is no where to be seen, even on sites with over 100 vocalists listed. Britney Spears is on there, but not Shirley. For the life of me, I just don't understand how this can be! Technically, Shirley is certainly one of the greatest POP vocalists of the last hundred years, and she deserves to be on these 'Best Vocalist' lists. And, she should certainly be in the top 10!
