Grew up sailing/swimming on Lake Michigan, now a surfer in NorCal. GREAT advice all around. I might add one tip: bring a 5 gal jug of hot water for rinsing off after the session then jump into a warm car to dry and change. Inspiring video! Might have to fly home this winter for some Milwaukee waves...
...hm. Maybe just stick to NorCal.

I surfed near Devils Slide once on a trip to San Francisco in JULY and it felt like putting my face in a freezer hahaha. I couldn't imagine the North East. Granted, I'm a Central Floridian so water temps never dip under 60.

I came across this during my research to surfing cold water. I moved from HI to WA and want to surf, again. Just picked up an O'Neill Psycho Tech 5.5/4 and hope this thing keeps me warm this winter. lol! I am a wuss in cold water but am willing to give it a go. May just have to stick to snowboarding but man I want to surf soon. Great video! Love your content!

ALWAYS CARRY A SPARE FOR A FRIEND...OR IN AN EMERGENCY...ALWAYS KEEP WARM WATER/INSULATED/KEEP A COOLER FULL...LASTS A FEW HRS... USE WARM WATER...IT WORKS.
This was ace for me to watch today I sadly missed out on summer surf bc of health issues Ugh but by the Grace of God I'll be back in the water in just a few weeks! Hoping to not miss a single day from then out!! Myrtle beach obv doesn't get as cold as y'all but it can get cold, especially when your body isn't use to it. Last winter our water temp dropped to 52'. For me that was frigid :) I went out and bought a 5 mm then I was nice and cozy 😁

Moved from Jersey to San Diego in 2000. I honestly could not go back to winter surfing in the north east. You guys got bigger balls despite the cold water than anyone here in SD. Its 70 degrees with 69 degree water and its November 1st.

I used to open up a vitamen E capsule and put that on my face the night before a cold weather session. I felt it helped repel the water off of my face and also protect it from the elemnets.

I tried surfing in Washington state in the winter - I was putting on my down jacket and ski gloves when I got out and pulled my wetsuit half way down...
and that was only air temp hi 30s and water temp in the mid 40s (approx)
cold as heck water keeps the crowds down - my limit for cold now is low 50s for both air and water

6/5/4 with the fuzzy inside. round toe 7mm booties and 7mm lobster claw gloves. I bring a cooler filled with hot water. Fill the gloves and boots then put them on and get out there. Paddle out in February with wind chill in single digits and water temp around 37F and I can stay out for 2/3 hours without even a hint of chill. that's my system. Works wonders in Mass and New Hampshire. Hot water will ruin your booties and gloves in 2 years but it's better than losing your fingers and toes.
Lol entered this video because in my country in the winter we have like 5 degrees and a bit of rain but man you are doing it super extreme :O

Enjoy your vids. One thing we do in Oregon to survive cold water surfing is the 'Hot Shower.' I can't live without it. Get a big 'ol gallon bleach bottle that doesn't leak. Before you leave for surfing, fill it with the hottest water you can get from the tap. Roll it up in your 2nd wetsuit and stick it in a cooler, or your rubbermaid tub. When you get out, frozen stiff, grab that bottle and dump that hot hot water down your suit and all over... omygod... so good... yew..

Nice tips there dude! Here in northern europe (sweden) watertemperature is ~9C now. That´s warm. But when it´s below zero I go out windsurfing with my Rip Curl Flashbomb 6/4 (Hooded) and dakine gloves for the winter. A friend cut off the leg of on an old wetsuit and use it around his neck to get it extra tight between the hood and the suit and takes a warm bath in the tube before going out, don´t know if it helps. Some dudes also have small hoses from their mouth that goes into the gloves to blow warm air into them. Damn we do everything to keep going out on the water! I use to have a waterjug with warmwater to pour in the suit out on the surfspot. Also if you have a old car, like my volvo stationwagon, it also works to drive to the spot and back with the wetsuit on. Works a charm! But the best thing would be to have a build a wood-burning sauna at the spot or to rebuild a caravan to a souna on wheels and go with it! Btw have you tried windsurfing Ben?

Many many many years ago It snowed at Christmas down here in N-Fl ... Me and my bud paddled out . There was drifts on the sea oats .. I had every piece of wet suit I could find on and still froze my ass off !LOL!! Waves were pretty big and clean with offshore wind .. Caught 3 nice rides and I wasn't about to fall .. It was just too damn cold .. I looked over at my friend and we both pointed to shore at the same time .LOL!! Now watching your vid really makes me feel like a big puss now ! Heh Heh !!

Actually, I used to bounce off ice when I windsurfed and I used a drysuit...is there such a thing as a surfing drysuit??? The one I had would have been hard to use surfing I think. Try and link up with Johnny Grubbs too on the Olympic Peninsula. All these guys can be found on FB. Grubbs took my spot surfing for a local clothing line “Northwest Riders”. There’s no good surf over here though really haha. All myths. Nothing but rain and more rain haha!
