About The Alienist:
The Alienist is an upcoming American drama television series based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr. The psychological thriller drama is set in 1896, when a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes has gripped the city. Newly appointed top cop Teddy Roosevelt calls upon Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist -- aka alienist -- and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation in secret. Joining them in the probe is Sara Howard, a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters.

It’s true. When given certain factors, events and stressors people are often quite capable of some horrible things even though they may seem the most sensible individuals. For instance addiction. It was once the popular theory that if one’s parents or relatives were attics of any kind then the child will inevitably follow that same path. However it is later argued that addiction is caused by stressors and events in an individual‘s life and if those stressors and negative events were removed then that person would not become an addict. Have you ever heard of the diathesis stress model? It was a Nobel prize winning study that covered this concept. I highly recommend it.

I think that should be rephrased as a "series of traumatic events". But then again perhaps Lazlo has hit the nail on the head, by saying "right or wrong combination of events". After all being coddled for so long coupled with a level of expectation, will also potentially lead to one becoming broken beyond repair.
This is true back in those days women were expected to marry have children and take care of both children and husband even when she felt like she couldn't be happy herself ughhhh THIS SHOW IS AMAZING

@@adysluminsky9182 It is in many parts of the world. And in every part of the world there is social pressure and expectations of how an individual should behave and look like. It's not very different from what is portayed in the show.
Ady just because you and your friends do not have the pressure and the expectations that society have towards women doesn’t mean it’s not happening. That is an incredibly naive way to look at the world. “If I don’t see it then it’s not real or happening.” Women today are still expected to fill out the traditional role as wives with children. They are criticized if they are full time working mothers, called selfish if they choose not to have children. Some are not even allowed by doctors to have their tubes tied because they are told they might change their minds or their husbands might want kids. And if they do have children they are expected to be perfect to the point that if had a c section instead of a natural birth then they aren’t considered as a real woman. So yeah society’s expectations haven’t change.
where I come from women are still expected to marry and have children even when they're not ready. Some aspects of Western society I admire are that there are no constraints on women (at least not the kind of ones women in my place go through) and they're allowed to build themselves, professionally, personally, and then marry

What does fascinating to me or I should say more accurately was incredibly infuriating is that society looks down upon psychology. At least in the United States. Which is peculiar to me because America has such a high addiction rate to substance, Hi number of suicide, homicide, and such. But instead of actually attempting to understand how such things comes to be Americans instead ignore it or if they acknowledged they brush it off with the supposed hi number of suicide, homicide, and such. @@he-ch1559 psychology may not be able to provide definite answers but it definitely provides a framework that can lead us towards definite answers. And quite frankly psychological analysis has been able to explain many aberrant mental responses and life choices that people have made.
Prior to all we had was guesswork and religious nonsense.

For that this is my favorite scene in all the series.
Because Sarah represents to those women who are not like the rest who follow what "is expected" of them, a fast wedding, a couple of kids, having a job or not....in our current days...Sarah loves John but she does not fit so well with him, or him with her ,maybe is not the moment...and the age. She´s passing the age proper in that time like in our society happens with women in a late 30 for on.
Really what´s said by Lazlo is a real thing, if you take the risck of a motherhood or a wedding without love just for follow society´s standars without an inner preparation you can end like that woman, crazy.

Great series, I love psychology so these talks are fascinating. Sometimes I worry that doctor Laszlo studies the minds of those alienated all too intensely, sometimes upsetting his fellow men, for as he said, we all possess that raw material required to commit a crime.
Intriguing story, I may read the book but I don't want spoilers from either, I'll have to learn to keep it balanced.

It's actually a series, though the first book can stand alone. Also, since the book is quite long, you could probably read it side-by-side as the episodes air.
You should watch the film Forbidden Planet made in 1956. A film that remains to this day in my opinion, well ahead of it's time.

He basically explained how the Joker was born.
I disagree. The Joker was mistreated and took it personally. That is not what this woman did. Laszlo is explaining that the expectation on women in society is to Get married and have children, even when they are not ready. I can imagine having children back to back only exacerbated this. We’re currently experiencing this now with my older sister. When her daughter was born 3 1/2 years ago, she did not bond with her as she felt she should. She said it felt like she was babysitting and she was waiting for the parents to come back. Eventually she grew to love my niece. Now she is expecting her second child and while she is happy about the news, part of the reason they’re having a second is to give my niece a playmate, not because SHE necessarily wants to.
This show should have more seasons ugh it was so awesome!

It’s rather ironic to look back on this scene now after where we are in the series. Sara supposedly values work before family but somehow can’t find empathy for a woman who snapped and killed her children? That tells me the yearning for motherhood and bonding is there somewhere, otherwise she wouldn’t be so appalled.
I think that personally valuing work over motherhood does not remove empathy from you. Plenty of people who don’t want kids still love kids. I’ve experienced this first hand as my uncle always loved me and treated me amazingly, but I found out later in life that he found the thought of having his own children appalling. And besides, it’s a very basic show of empathy to despise a child killer, even if you don’t particularly like children yourself.
So he summed up and reiterated the most important points both Nietzsche and then Jung made....should this be enough for me to think this is a good show..I dunno...I jsut finished Ozrak....all the rest of the stuff on Netflix looks like fukin garbage....should I really watch this?
