I know right? that's why I say the Dic gender bending Zoisite was tame compared to what some other countries did. lol
Though interestingly enough the original manga apparently didn't have Zoisite x Kunzite and had the Sailor Moon Manga Materials Collection even state that they had a brotherly bond.

The cousins shit they pulled was hilarious. After watching Sailor Moon, I clicked on some videos that a user called Sailor Moon Says posts and oh boy did I have a big laugh at all those clips. Not only with the voice acting but with the poor censorship 💀 They really thought people would think they're cousins. "Amara, don't worry! Your hands still look clean to me." I can't.
Although, I've heard that the cloverway staff didn't want to censor their relationship but were forced to because of TV reasons. So instead they gave a lot of hints that those two were actually lovers. Still tho, making them cousins was dumb, they could've made them best friends instead honestly.

It was in the Russian dub that Zoisite and Kunzite were father and son. Even though their other speeches were translated pretty much directly from the Japanese ones, before dying, Zoisite said to Kunzite "I've always loved you... like a father."

I really REALLY liked this video, I grew up fascinated by sailor moon, to the point that I even have A Chibiusa tattoo on my leg, and it was also the reason why I dyed my hair pink for more than 5 years.
As a child, I felt FASCINATED by Haruka and Kou Seiya and I was very deeply in love especially with sailor Uranus, I was obsessed with drawing her all the time, imagining love stories with her.
I guess that´s why till this day I really adore people that are gender-fluid and sometimes I think part of myself found somehow something that I really needed inside me, in this manga/anime and makes me who I am these days, even if it sounds cheesy it´s what it is! Great video !!

In the anime they are, but not in the original manga. In the manga they are all gnc women. It's something that
Naoko Takeuchi had an issue with when the anime was being made; she'd declared that Sailor Guardians were supposed to only be of the female sex and that change was not one she supported

The Starlights are biologically female and they disguise themselves as men while looking for Princess Kakyuu. You can actually make a good case for Seiya being a transman since they're very comfortable being a man, whereas Taiki and Yaten are obviously only tolerating their civilian forms for the mission

Sailor Stars actually wasn't licensed for the USA/Canada until Viz, so it was much later than 2005.
Thankfully, we had the Mixx/Chixx/TokyoPop manga, which was a mess of its own in the translation but kept all relationships, genders, romances intact.
A lot of the issues were also not Dic, but CWI, who dubbed S and SuperS.
The truth is, without the censorship we'd have never seen Sailor Moon (and because of it, a lot of anime, especially shojo, in general). Sailor Moon's early dubs maybe have even helped contribute to changing attitudes (no one bought the cousins thing, let's be real.) and could have even served for that generation easing into acceptance a little more.
So as bad as it may look 20+ years later, I'm thankful it happened so we were allowed to see it.
I've gone from hating on the dub to realizing it is what introduced me to Sailor Moon and enjoying some of its campy humor.

  • @therealhardrock

I think the most definitive evidence that Fish Eye is a cross-dressing gay guy is that in episode 10 Hawk's Eye says to Fish Eye "we're all guys here." Fish Eye also tells Yoshiki Usui "I'm a guy." In that episode his mark was also gay so he could get further not disguising himself. I think too many people are reading modern social mores that are less than 10 years old into an old show. Keep in mind also that Naoko Takeuchi made a rule that only biological females can be Sailor Senshi which is why she protested against the Star Lights changing their biology when they transform. There's no Sailor Earth because Mamoru Chiba is male and has the Earth Sailor Crystal.

I'm still to this day perplexed the old dub didn't take the easy route and had the Sailor Stars be all-female even in their civilian/band disguises... considering the lengths both Saban and Cloverway went with prior seasons.
I remember as a kid COMPLETELY buying the lie I was given that Zoicite and Fisheye were females in the old dubs (even crushing on them admittedly, though I guess once I learned they were actually effeminate males, I discovered I was likely bi), and considering how equally androgynous the Stars were even when acting as males, I likely wouldn't have noticed any changes in my naivety back then...
but I did know about the Uranus/Neptune thing by the time the Cloverway dub introduced them, which made the never-deleted romantic scenes between them a lot more awkward, yet hilarious of how sloppy it was handled.

In Latin America we were lucky we had everything dubbed, all seasons and episodes without cuts or edits, we got some things from the Dic dub like the names Serena, Darien, etc. and female Zoisite and Fisheye, fortunatelly Haruka and Michiru were not called cousins and the Sailor Starlights had different voice actors for their male and female forms.

    Two misconceptions about Stars:
-The starlights were never meant to be trans icons or a topic of debate. they turned into men because the anime director wanted to replicate season 1's Mamory/Usagi moments with another male character. Why they didn't keep Seiya as a crossdressing woman? The sub version of the date episode between Mako and Haruka explains it pretty well, with Usagi thinking that Mako possibly being a lesbian would be disgusting. Despite UraNep being blatantly there the whole time, alright...(viz changed that one, making them say that Haruka is already dating Michiru, thus Mako would interfere if they went out on a date, but that doesn't erase the original's homophobic implications)
-It took so long for it to come to America, not because of the gayness, but because at that time Naoko founded PNP to basically control every aspect of the Sailor Moon franchise, including adaptions and dubbing. Everything basically froze from that point. The fact that it had gender-changing soldiers was purely coincidental, and America really got the preultimate season at the wrong time.

"father and son" - it's from Russian 90s dub. But they are not actual relatives there - Zoizit, dying, says:
"Lord Kunzite, I loved you... like a father".
Russian version was censored or altered as well - Queen Metalia turned into King Metalia (wtf?), Queen Beryl -> Queen Perdition/Death (wtf?!), Fisheye turned into a woman, everyone reffered to Haruka as a woman, but she spoke of herself as of a man (the Russian language has grammatical gender, so she kept saying, for instance, "я сказал" (masculine) instead of "я сказалА" (feminine))

I understand that it was here that Sailor Moon was exported for the first time outside of Japan in summer of 1993 and it had a censorship similar to that of America, in the case of Kunzite and Zoicite they were presented as uncle and nephew, Haruka and Michiru (Timy and Vichy) also did that they were cousins, in the case of fisheye, strangely they kept it as a man, although with a very effeminate voice and with respect to the starlights they did not make any changes, I hope you find it interesting

I feel kinda robbed of a better story as a child but as an adult I can appreciate the subtext, motifs and art aesthetic on a deeper level. I think the censorship says a lot about how in North America we are ok exposing kids to sanitized violence but not to consenting loving relationships and the consequences of fighting 😂

Back when I watch this series as a child I used to be completely obsessed with it although I wouldn't say child because I was into this series until I was 32 years old... The thing is that back then we didn't have all these silly buzzwords for gays and alphabet letters they can be gay without being labeled labels are for material objects not people. I don't understand the need for having to label them they were just awesome characters as they were but now this whole community has ruined the entire show for me. People get really upset about little things and it's just disgusting how they treat each other.

My thought on Sailor Moon Cosmos and I said I love it so much it is the best it feels like the Avengers Infinity War Endgame and Justice League Dark Apocalyps War combined because we see Sailor Moon and her friends are losing or failing the battle against Galaxia and her minions win and this shows Sailor Moon lowest point of loss of her friends and then she have to rise up like the Star keep shinning have courage no give up with the Kakyuu, the Sailor Starlights, Sailor Chibi Chibi with Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Quartet soon follow they do whatever it takes to win this time and bring everyone back no matter what just that Avengers and Justice League did in Endgame and Apocalyps War and it so epic and triumphant ending to the reboot or Crystalverse.

I often say that if someone hated the DiC version, go see what Battle Of The Planets did to Gatchaman 1972. Now that I think about it, Gatchaman did have a major villain that is a non binary. I think I called the villain a shapeshifter to explain it.
About 10 years ago, I did not realize Japan was not a gay friendly place. Is it bad if I thought all the fujoshi made me think it was gay friendly? I suppose I was another person who thought much of it looked like Shibuya Crossing.
I remember reading a bunch of internet rumors during late 1998 and early 1999. If you thought it was funny how weird news gets from Japan to the USA, it doesn't even match.
I remember buying the Viz DVDs back in 2017 or 2018. I laughed so hard when I heard a deleted joke. I didn't know a lot of Japanese words, most of the ones I know are known by weebs. When I heard "Pettanko" in the Giwakke episode, I cracked up.
19:03 It doesn't sound that strange. The Super Mario Brothers 2 for the Famicom was called "Lost Levels" before being added to Mario All Stars and sold in the USA.

Seasons 3 & 4 (S & Super S) were NOT Dubbed by DiC, it was done by CloverWay. They both had VERY different ways in Dubbing the Sailor Moon Anime. The DiC Dub changed the Background Music and added in their own sound effects, which was actually a good idea to make everything sound consistent for when Scenes needed to be spliced together , cut suddenly or skipped in its entirety due to Censorship. CloverWay Kept the Original Background Music, which was nice but made it PAINFULLY OBVIOUS When they Cut Scenes and what not. CloverWay would also go back and forth from using The Original Attack Names (Moon Tiara Action, Sparkling Wide Pressure, Etc), and the DiC Dub ones (Moon Tiara Magic, Jupiter Thunder Clap/Cloud Zap, Etc) instead of making them consistent. Plus, ALOT of the Voices Changed when CloverWay took over, Most Notably, Sailor Moon. I wish DiC continue to dubbing Sailor Moon into the 3rd & 4th Seasons as it would've been more consistent with the Previous Season's Dub and i think it would have actually been kind of cool to hear their original music integrated with seasons 3 & 4. The Music and some of the sound effects they made for the first two Season's Dub (and the 3 Movies on VHS) are some of the most Beautiful, Recognizable & Iconic when it comes to Sailor Moon I'd Say. The was a Group on Facebook years ago (dont know if its still there or if they are still doing it) that were Dubbing the 5th Season of Sailor Moon in the Style of the DiC Dub. I thought they did a Amazing Job, I just wish I remembered what the Project was called But what i DO Remember was that the Three Lights civilian names all started with J, with Star Fighter Being "Justin". Imma try and find it and will edit/update this comment if I do come across it Again.

So I never really watched Sailor Moon so correct me if I’m way off base here but isn’t it about like teenagers anyway so [14:53] would still be way worse as a cis-woman because then it appears that a prepubescent girl is just being fully exposed. And if that isn’t the case and this character _is actually_ an adult it still seems like they aren’t an adult in that context and are the same age as the main cast of all the ‘Sailors.’
Idk, like I said I could be way off here though.

    • @EllenNoel
      @EllenNoel  3 года назад +4

The character's age is never really specified, and they are seen at a bar a few times, but sailor moon does definitely have a problem with putting it's teen characters in age inappropriate situations. For example the lead character, Usagi, is 14, and in the original 90's anime her love interest, Mamoru, is a University student. Which is definitely a yikes. So your point definitely still stands.

@@EllenNoel gotcha, yeah unfortunately it wouldn’t be alone in portraying teen girls in a questionable manner or in dubious _read: unsettling_ relationships.
Not that those aspects completely overrule and discredit media of any other value or substance it has to offer. I just hope that one day we can stop sexualizing and simultaneously infantilizing teen girls, especially in media deliberately targeting that demographic.
_sorry for the long reply. I somehow deviated into a tangent there for a minute._

Back when I was obsessivrly printing pages from AniPike (y'all real little shrimps don't even know about AniPike; get on my level) when I heard S was coming to America, I was excited. I don't know why. I *knew* America was homophobic as Hell. I knew they had no chance. Still, I went to my Godmother's house and waited eagerly for 4:00 when Sailor Moon would come on and I'd get to see Haruka and Michiru for the first time. I was so excited. First new episide I'd ever see (my parents didn't have cable).
It was the Love Contest episode.
You already know where this is going.
"They're both girls, and cousins, too".
I was... furious. I was incensed. I was livid. But what did I expect? I don't know... maybe for them not to address it or something. I was in 6th or 7th grade at the time, so who knows what I was thinking. I should have expected it. But yeah, I was not happy.
X-number of years later and cartoons have LGBT characters and relationships all over the place, from two dads on Loud House to Kelsey amd Stacks in Craig of the Creek. I'm happy for the kids of today, and I know it's only possible because of the work the LGBT elders did, so, I'm thankful.
But I'm still mad about the cousins thing.

I have come to understand that Optimum Productions was behind the extensive editing of Sailor Moon. The alterations and quality issues often originated from this company. Optimum Productions ceased operations in 2010. Despite their efforts to impact what fans value, my dissatisfaction stems from their edits, which I perceive as careless. In particular, their modification of content involving LGBTQ+ themes was disappointing.

So I got that from one Point of view but then they die uranus and Neptun and I just tought well if that was the reason then here you have two heros so that should be ok
