part of me wonders if 3/4 of your examples being queer arises from queer celebrities selling this idea of niceness/community to other queer folks who need or want it the most in a way straight viewers may not feel as strong a need for. It also reminds me of how in fandom, it isn't uncommon to see bnfs using their queerness/politeness to shield themselves from valid criticism. ty for the video!

The "glass house" argument screams of "yet I see you participating in society, yes I'm very intelligent" meme as of the vast majority of us have any actual choice in using gas in our everyday lives and there's no difference between that and actively getting rich from fracking lmao
I think one of the best things I ever did while growing up was ceasing to care at all about celebrities as people. They're professionals whose work I enjoy, not my little uwu babies I invest my life in.

This was a really interesting video. RUclips recommended this so I gave it a shot as someone sorta dealing with this from a totally unique perspective. I'm a member of the furry fandom, and I have some small claims to fame, but first and foremost I'm a musician. And when I go to conventions, and ask for the ability to perform, even my basic asking for stuff like soundchecks gets miscontrued as "bossy/diva/bitch attitude". And what really prompted me to leave this comment was when you said your video was comprised of mostly queer people. The furry fandom is primarily LGBT as well, but it's also overwhelmingly cisgender gay white men. So as an asexual POC trans girl, the daggers have been out for me as not being perceived as "nice" for as long as I can remember. In our community it's just sort of naively expected that "everyone is friends with everyone all the time!" (or being open to having relations), and the people who don't fit into that get pushed aside by the ones who play the perceived niceness game the best (often always of that overrepresented majority), so true or not, people get taken down all the time on social media within this community, myself included. And as someone plugged into celebrity culture (while most furries are engrossed in video games by contrast), I definitely notice how similar it is. Like you basically teased Lizzo at the end but she's one I definitely heard about for stuff like this. I actually feel bad cause having been through musical misunderstandings, I wonder how much is true and how much is exaggerated by people that want attention or to tear someone down. I myself don't want to play the parasocial game, but as being me has resulted in massive pushback from the community and jealous vicious attacks to tear down my character, I'm really just over "nice" as a concept. I just wanted to make music and be creative, I didn't realize I had to kiss the furry establishment's ass just to be respected :p

I love the (accidental) queer focus of this video as well, people don’t tend to criticise lgbtq+ members based off of their own faults as much -either out of fear of repercussions, or it gets shrouded by their queer-ness. Great perspective and interesting video!

I think that it makes perfect sense that in recent years so many of the beloved celebrities who were revealed to be secretly horrible in real life are members of the LGBT+ community. Why? Because being an openly queer person in the public eye is a relatively new phenomena, making the standards of behavior and acceptability much much higher. It's also worth noting that the three queer celebrities highlighted were all famously on TV shows, a medium where the audience has to invite stars into their living rooms on a weekly basis, making the likability of a star critical to their success. Thus if a queer person wants to be successful on TV they must preform likability in order to get ahead, and then in addition must present a persona of being hyperbolically wonderful in order to reassure all those people who perceive the queer community as being inherently indecent, immoral and a bad influence on children. While Ellen, JVN and RuPaul have all been revealed to be jerks of varying levels, it's important to remember the impossibly high standards of behavior that we put on all celebrities who represent marginalized groups, and realize that a fall from grace is inevitable when we require people stand on a pedestal.

While Gene Kelly was twice Debbie Reynolds age at 40, her other costar Donald O'Connor was 7 years older at 27. Donald O'Connor said that Gene Kelly was difficult to work with.

Ellen was the first celebrity where i actually took a look and didnt think the reactions were on par with the accusations ? Some of the things i saw seemed to be ellen just not being the bubbly perfect persona people expected. I’m still of the opinion that her being a very prominent queer figure, especially on a show shown to kids, may have led to a more drastic push than for similar accusations for a straight.
All this despite the fact that i stopped watching her show because the happy demeanor felt a bit forced after a while 🤷

I don't think people performing a specific personality for the sake of others has anything to do with captialism. It's literally basic sociology. We're social animals, we need to fit into society and communities in order to survive. This includes falsifying ones identity in different ways in order to remain in society. In Japan there are three parts of the self, the one in your head, the one that speaks, and the one in your heart, and the third is always invisivble to the outside world. In order to have infulence, whether in a household, a buisness, a community, a celebrity or a president of a country, it often requires appearing to emulate whatever the most desireable social traits that the society has constructed. In order to have infulence, it requires being likeable. Desiring to be infulencial isn't even captialistic in itself, it's not always about money. Money simply represents having access to better resources, which means a better chance of survival of ourselves and our offspring. I don't think these people are good by any means, nor am I justifying their actions, but I feel like blaming this on captialism is intellectually dishonest when this is something every society has to deal with, the difference is celebrites do it on a much larger scale.

I agree it's a social issue! I even say so at the end! I just think the forces of capitalism can work to exacerbate that issue, when you're selling a personality as a product.
In no way shape or form is people being "fake" a purely capitalist issue lol.

Eh, I'd say being an asshole is just human nature. It's a perceived lack of repurcussions which brings it out.
