It is true I think. The reason is that OEM tyres have a different compound which is specifically made to get better ratings at safety relevant tests for example the stability of the tyre an so on. However I don’t think it’s so bad that you have to get an instant replacement, just use your OEM tyres up if your buying a brand new motorcycle. When I bought my 636 the back tire was bald. I ended up going with the Battlax S22, It's amazing in the rain, and provides even a typically cautious rider like me the confidence to push the tire right to the edge. I recommend it to everyone.

I can only imagine what you guys would be able to achieve with a larger budget, but you'll get there. Much love from a true fan!!
This is another great video. One element that you didn’t mention but which is important is the tread symmetry. For street tires I highly recommend using tires with asymmetrical patterns, especially those whose grooves cross alternately towards the center of the tire. Why is this important? Anyone who has ever ridden across a bridge that has metal grating has felt the tires (especially the front) wobble as it tries to track with the grating. The same is true when riding on roadways that have had the top layer of asphalt removed prior to laying down a new coating. At best this can be distracting and at worst it can be dangerous. By using tires with asymmetrical patterns, they don’t try to track with the grooves. At the very least the front tire should be asymmetrical, and ideally both should be. It’s amazing how much easier a bike handles with these tires.
I have been a great admirer of your work, guys!!! The research. the analysis, the presentation... Amazing!!! You never disappoint, Ryan... Keep workin' it... All the best!!!
One thing that this great video shows is that one really does need to keep on top of new developments. The last motorcycles I put tires on were a 2007 R1 and a 2008 Buell 1125r. With the Buell I matched the rear tire as closely as possible to the front sticking with Pirelli. That was a poor decision since those tires wore quickly without a traction advantage. On the Yamaha I replaced the factory Pirellis with Michelins although the front tire was one year older that the rear. Today it seems like the Bridgestone s22 would be a far better choice. By their nature front and rear motorcycle tires are very different. Unless you are riding at the limit, which belongs on a race track, I believe mismatching front and rear tires is just a matter of learning the nature of the handling with the new tire. A motorcycle shop where I bought the rear Michelin for the Yamaha is a great example for learning the handling of a new tire or set. We got discussing that and the owner told me I would be shocked by the number of riders who dropped their bikes leaving the parking lot. That was caused by the rider ignoring the standard shop advice to corner gingerly until the mold release agent is worn off.
There are exactly two tires for sale in America that fit my bike and are regularly in stock online - and one of them is made by Michelin. But when I get a bigger bike, I'm going to be glad I watched this video.
Hello there @FortNine! First of all i want to give you a big thumbs up for the quality of your videos and for the total effort you give to make such a quality content. Now. I have a Honda XL Varadero 1000cc and I am going to change my Bridgestone Battlax A40 to something else just to try a different brand. I am not a "off roader" guy and i use my motorcycle for long distance trips and daily drives in the city. I've done my research and i am close to Pirelli's Scorpio Trail 2 are the best choice. (i have a 110/80 R19 at the front and a 150/70 R17 at the back) It would be a pleasure to give me an extra hand with your knowledge and point of view for which tire should i choose. Greetings from Greece and keep up the hard work.

🏁🚨Info is always to such extent that very little questions are unresolved and videos are very informative, but at this stage i would (and i think alot of followers) would like to see a in depth review and some testing done on sport tires( s22, power rs, corsa 2, racetec rr, Q3, ) to actually separate the cream of the crop. Just as done with chain cleaner, chain lube, oils, helmets etc. Put some track time in and test lap times test abrasion , put a load on them on a rotating surface and apply torq to see slip/skid level, pressure changes, temp and so on. I know it easier said than done but wil be worth it and would love to see it as tires are the biggest grey area for alot of riders. Keep up the awesome content,🌋😎

Dude. Your tire content is always my favorite. I wish you'd do 4 tire vids a year. Thanks again.
Hi regular watcher here in UK....subbed...what is fortnine meaning. .? Cheers from dave
Oh man, he answered that question like 20 episode ago. I totally forgot what it means
Fortnine is actually an e commerce store of motorcycle gear in Canada. This is just their RUclips channel yet it is this good.
ruclips.net/video/tSAR0b-0w8k/видео.html
Canadian here. FortNine refers to the forty-nineth parallel of latitude. It is exactly where the US -Canada border runs from British Columbia to eastern border of the province of Manitoba.
lol
This was such a great explanation about tires, and the bit about knobs or blocks....game changing!
This video is so good and informative i watched it twice in a row. 💖👍🏆👏👏👏
haha, I can relate ... I watched it 4x in a row ..... guess I'm a slower learner, lol .... RyanF9's superb video's are crammed with great info, too much (in a good way) to absorb in 1 view
Your videos are awesome. Instead of telling people what’s good and what’s bad you teach them what makes a tire good at each thing and let them make their own decision👌
after watching this i can honestly say, i still have no god dam idea what tyres to buy
The Professor of Motorcycles with a great sense of Humor!!! Love Your Videos Ryan!!
I see 12 people didn't buy the right tires
When I bought my 636 the back tire was bald. I ended up going with the Battlax S22, It's amazing in the rain, and provides even a typically cautious rider like me the confidence to push the tire right to the edge. I recommend it to everyone.
Sad you didn't showcase some Shinko tires. Cheap and reliable Korean-made tires. Great for the rain imo.
He did last year which lead me to purchase Shinko 705's for my DR650.
I think they are japanese
@@Dancooper241 nope. Definitely Korean.
The entire reason for America establishing a southern state and creating the Vietnam war. Rubber.
wow, best explanation of tires I've EVER seen or heard of :) you guys are astounding.
So wanted to run before seeing your video. Now I have an headache and had applied to work at Bridgestone. I hate you Ryan 😆😆😆
Man, how I love it!
It's not about "what's better" but "why is better"!
“You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.”
But are the Michelin Road 5’s still good! You recommended those years ago
It only came out last year. It is an exceptional tire. I use the Road 5 on my bike and absolutely love them. I ride a Versys 650 that gets pushed pretty hard in the canyons.
Yep, still an excellent tire. ~RF9
Put them on my BMW K1200GT last spring 2000 miles ago after 2 sets of Road 4’s, a set of 3’s and a set of 2’s. They are an excellent tire.
Genuinely professional production. It truly comes across like a quality motorcycle show from a big tv channel. Great video, great audio, great visuals, great content, and fantastic delivery. I subscribed on the first video I watched, which was about 3 wheelers. I thought it was a big budget show made by RUclips.
Nailed it again. 👍
I am addicted to your channel. I dont know what to do!
When will you do a motorcycle review (like the 701 vitpilen, ktm 1290,...) .those reviews are the best.
When they have sponsored LoL
He did one for the 701 vitpilen
@@robb2991 I said "like"
@qwerty Gentile He did the BMW GS310 which is made in india.
With "any indian motorcylce" he might mean something like the Scout or FTR 1200 from.. well Indian Motorcycles.
Extremely informative and by the way, I’m the knucklehead that has several sets of pretty much brand new takeoffs in my basement collecting dust because this video with it’s scientific approach to selecting tires was made well after my experiments LOL! Rewind, I’ll be watching it a few more times
"Woooow" -RyanF9
I love this channel and I like that you cut out all the BS and get to the point. Thanks a bunch mate and keep up with the quality videos.
riders be like "I love your channel, im using everything i learned here!"
-will buy the cheapest round black thing on the internet if is says "supersport" in the ad-
LOL
True dat.
best analysis i'v seen in some time, love the engineering approach and the "twilight zone voice", thank you.. RTG
7:10 exceptionally cheap, hey, that's me
Perfect timing! Just bought new tires 2 weeks ago. Thanks, Ryan!
But still, why did you kill Ned Stark, Joffrey?
A tire explanation given by someone that did research and knows what he is talking about, that is something rare on RUclips videos.
You know you're doing something right when you have a video up for 2 hours and have 10+ dislikes. Your haters follow you and keep tabs on how good you're doing..... 😂
how much you wanna bet they drive in cages?
One of the best ones if not the best. Hated your first stuff with BB guns and baseball bats. But now with genuine real info your one of the best out there!! Keep it up
Never would consider off road tyres but sat through your whole video and learned quite allot. Your analysis and production are sublime 😊
Plenty to see here don’t keep moving on, watch and learn. Outstanding as usual.
Tires are my highest cost of owning a motorcycle. Excellent video.
You don't spend enough on gas then!
A Ha! I meant for maintenance
I very much enjoyed the second installment of “teaching a man to ... pick motorcycle products” instead of listing them off. Looking forward to the next ones :D
I'm looking to buy an R9T this coming year and have really been anxious about finding a good tirefor me and this video...you're entire series...has seriously helped me out. Thank you.
Man thank you so much for the video. You always manage to teach me new stuff in a well presented way, and don't get me started on the production quality: beyond expectations every time. I can only imagine what you guys would be able to achieve with a larger budget, but you'll get there. Much love from a true fan!!
Without a doubt some of if not the best content on U tube....
This may be your best video yet...and that is REALLY saying something!
This channel is so good! Ryan is a superstar presenter! Who dislikes Ryan's content?!
Only channel where I like the video before even watching it.
I will be 70 this year and I started riding when I was 14.
(i have a 110/80 R19 at the front and a 150/70 R17 at the back)
It would be a pleasure to give me an extra hand with your knowledge and point of view for which tire should i choose.
Greetings from Greece and keep up the hard work.
Dude, this is easily one of - if not THE - best tire video I've ever watched. I truly learned a great deal from this video. I'm a big fan of explaining the science behind things so that I can better understand why and how to make a decision. Beyond that, it's just super cool. :)
Well done sir!
Two words: 1. Wicked 2. Smart
Thanks!
There should be a ratting system for sticky traction and wear. It would help us decide which design worked best for our riding conditions.
Best tire video I’ve ever seen.
Fortnine does it again, made a great video I never even knew I wanted!
