Agreed!. I think 'intuitive' would be a better term than 'instinctive'. When I shoot thumb draw I know my brain is taking in a lot of information and doing some fancy calculus to aim the arrow but I intuitively predict where the arrow will go based on all that info. This process is validated (or invalidated) through practice.

Spot on! Aiming is always there and must be practiced!
For those fans who look up to lars andersen, he, himself, debunked his own claim about instinctive archery! Watch it!

100%! I can shoot in very low light but, if I can't see my arrow at all I couldn't hit a target across a phone booth.

Instinctive archery uses the subconscious. You are not consciously aware of what it's doing, but it's still calculating. It's like throwing a ball, you just trust your gut, hence instinctive. Muscle memory is also instinctive.

@societyofrobots - Muscle memory is learned therefore it cannot be instinctive.
For archery, there is always a reference point needed to make good shot

I totally agree! Instinct is something, You are born with. Nobody is born with an instinct for archery. Intuitiv is the better term, but intuition can be wrong, AND only Your first arrow would be shot intuitiv, the second is based on experience. There are ALWAYS reference points!

A reference point for the second arrow is the first arrow, thus there is nothing instinctive about it. The first arrow is just shot randomly looking at the target.

@zingerzte4192 - The first arrow is referenced towards what is being aimed at such as a bullseye. It is not randomly shot
