US Air Date: April 3, 2023
    Starring: Brooke Shields
    Network: Hulu
Synopsis: PRETTY BABY: BROOKE SHIELDS is a galvanizing look at actor, model and icon Brooke Shields as she transforms from a sexualized young girl to a woman discovering her power. Holding a mirror up to a society that objectifies women and girls, her story shows the perils and triumphs of gaining agency in a hostile world. The film follows Shields through her extraordinary childhood and complex relationship with her mother and manager, Teri Shields. Shields' professional career began at only 11 months old, working as a child model before starring in Louis Malle's controversial film "Pretty Baby" at the age of 12. She became the face of the eighties with Calvin Klein jeans ads, and leading roles in "The Blue Lagoon" and "Endless Love," navigating the unrelenting scrutiny of the press and a culture that wanted to commodify her. After defying stereotypes by going to college, Shields re-enters the entertainment industry as an adult, but it isn't until she begins to trust herself and her instincts that she's able to find her identity and voice.

I'd like to point out to the comment section that this isn't about beauty or lack thereof. It's about breaking a cycle. A cycle which has told girls and women that people have a right to look at them in this sexualized way and that they're nothing if they aren't beautiful in that way. Actresses like Brooke Shields and too many more to count were taken advantage of at such a young age and told they should be grateful that men wanted to look at their bodies. They grew up with shame and struggled to find an identity and a voice. In turn, two generations watching these stars and the media are still stuck in this pathology. It has to end.

I just finished this yesterday and it’s very interesting. Her life has had its highs and lows, but unlike some other child stars, she didn’t crash and burn. Despite hitting some really rough patches, she’s come out on top and her story is ultimately a triumph. Well done Brooke!

Brooke is smart but she didn’t crash and burn because she didn’t lose her looks in her 20’s and 30’s. Just being real. If she had nobody would be interested in her anymore. Brooke who? It’s the same reason people like Marilyn Monroe are so idolized to this day. She died pretty she didn’t get old. Like Ava Gardener, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth (I know it sounds like I’m referencing “Vouge” but I’m not) even Elizabeth Taylor in a way. They got old suddenly nobody cared as much. Do you ever notice when these stars want a reboot they remind people of how fabulous and even more beautiful they once were? Like Pamela Anderson with her book and documentary. It’s like “remember me from the 90’s? Wasn’t I hot Back then? It was wild”….. We’re still interested in these women but we’re interested in them in retrospect. It’s kind of sad in a way. Like if either of them did a sitcom today nobody would watch it. and obviously they do it for $$ too. Just the way our society is.

@@ckotcher1 I think what it means by crush and burn is that Brooke experience is not a story of drug addiction or promiscuity to the point of losing herself and staining her image , a lot of "Stars" had this , Marylin Monroe had a terrible life and everyone who researches her can find out the disgusting things she did to become an actress and how she led her life, there are plenty examples of an extremely beautiful actress who threw it down the toilet( another one is 60's French beauty Marianne Faithful, who looked like a Barbie doll and dated Mick jagger; is the list long.

It's not a crime to be beautiful. I'm not as pretty as Brooke, but I am pretty. I don't weaponize it, I don't flirt with married men or try to steal a man from another woman, etc.; but I won't let others make me feel bad for it either. Some of the resentment attractive people face is simply jealousy by others who aren't. Truth.

Sad that at almost 60 years old she still refuses to see what these predators did to her. She doesn’t have to dwell on it, but the majority of the documentary made excuses for the behavior of all of the adults. “It was art” “That ad campaign paid our bills” “That was the most beautiful film I ever did” and on and on and on. I walked away feeling disgusted. She’s a predators dream. Predators love the “willing participant/they enjoyed it/it’s not dirty it’s innocent fun narrative” And Brooke Sheilds gave it to them on a silver platter.

people say it's not about beauty, but about the fact that she was sexualized as a child. it's actually about much more. It is about the fact that beauty leads to even children being sexualized. so many people really think that there is such a thing as pretty privilege, but this film shows that that's nonsense. that beauty is a product that is abused even at an early age. beauty may be a sword on the surface, but only on the surface. you think it's a privilege if people only see your face, your body, as long as they're nice to you, you get the job, the parking space, the tip, but the fact that people only see beauty as a surface to live out their fantasies without thinking about you and what makes you who you are as a person doesn't interest you. anyone who glorifies that has no self-worth. because no amount of attention on earth is worth not seeing the person behind it. that's what the documentary was about. the documentary addressed many points on the subject of pretty privilege and made it pretty clear that beauty is not a blessing, at least as long as you're just a product for others. i personally believe that models like megan fox and adriana lima have often been able to use their beauty as a weapon. and i think every woman should. never let yourself be exploited because of that.

As I’ve taken a look into this Brooke Shields (Pretty Baby) as a full grown woman today, I can tell/see in her eyes even today that those who had the nerve to get her into doing any sexual scenes for whatever excuse they had, it has “definitely caused her damage!” She’s “literally been used” for those jerks/sexually minded perverts (males) only NOT Genuine men. Just those who want what they want at all & any cost to the young girls. Makes me feel disturbed & sickened by all this nonsense/objectification! I’m hearing Brooke talk rt now about all this, her mom is also a big part of this disgusting behaviour, shame on her! From as far back as she remembers the world told her that was who she was before she got a chance to know or even become who she was. It's too easy to just say she should have walked away from that world when her entire existence and identity were built upon it because she was forced into it during her formative years. Anyway, pointing the finger of blame at her is missing the entire point here and it's exactly what this toxic patriarchal culture wants us to do, instead of calling IT out on its sickness we blame the girls for their own blatant shameless exploitation, and even tell them they should be grateful!!! That conditioned knee-jerk reaction is exactly what enables this twisted misogynistic culture to continue. It's time we take aim at the right target.

@@milumav the smartest person is the one who is willing and able to adapt to change. She was never willing to find out who she really is and stayed in this environment. Also, what did she do to improve the lives of women in her profession that have to thrive in this environment? Did she really aim to make it easier/less challenging for them? If not, isn’t that deeply misogynistic?

@@rosemimi973 That's an oversimplification, and it either completely dismisses or ignores the deep psychological mechanisms at play. Anyway, this film is her stepping up and identifying the real problem in the hopes that it will help women in the future. Mock it, diminish it do whatever you like but I for one am glad she's doing this and I hope other women in the entertainment and fashion industry come forward as well. For too long those misogynistic industries have been setting degrading examples and impossible standards for young women for the sole purpose of preying on and profiting from the insecurities those standards seeded. The only way to break the bullshit spell is by exposing the strings.

@@milumav sometimes things are very simple. You gotta accept that. Misogynie between women is real. As long as women are willing to step over other women‘s „corpses“ to achieve their „dreams“ the situation will not change. Even a documentary does not help. If I had the money and the resources of Brooke Shields I would not only whine about what happened to me and make money with it, but create a foundation that helps and uplifts other women that are in the same situation. Have a nice life!
