I’d like to see a long version of the tour. Polaroid is awesome technology. I had thought only Fuji was still making this stuff.
The dutch never disappoint 😂
If you haven't seen it already, Smarter Every Day has a couple of videos touring the Kodak factory in the US. I Don't believe there were any segments on instant film, but the videos are well worth a watch regardless.
@@kalebroark87 Since Kodak doesn't make instant film (and never did to my knowledge) I would expect there to be.
@@TEDoddKodak did make instant film for Polaroid and their own cameras and film after their partnership with Polaroid. But then they ended up having to stop due to a lawsuit Polaroid brought against them.
@@nathansstuff1547 so they did at one point. Somehow I don't remember it. Lots of Polaroid around me in the 80s though (I even bought Type 47 from my camera back then).
But since they don't today there would be nothing relating instant film for to show.
Back in the day before Digital Storage Oscilloscopes (DSO) to save a waveform image, many scope manufacturers made an attachment that mounted/or contained a Polaroid camera, so that it could be mounted to the scope. I remember taking many waveform photos this way.
Tektronix also had an analog storage scope, that sort of retained a image on the phosphor, with a particular bias setting, but the results weren't all that great. That's why that feature never made it into the 1970s, and the "scope cameras" (see prior paragraph) became the standard, before DSOs made them obsolete.

Ohhh my little photographer heart went nuts when you mentioned being alone in the Polaroid lab! I'd be so excited! Love the cyanotype blue instant film! The fact there is only ONE Polaroid facility in the whole world really bums me out though. Regular film and print paper factories are almost non-existent as well... 🥺
I guess it's about time to learn how to make my own film.
There's an emulsion that you can buy to turn almost any surface into b&w photographs. I did one print on a mirror. I don't recommend it as the reflections off the mirror coating and through imperfections in the glass did add some haziness to the image. Plain glass would be fine though, I think.
When I was in high school there were maybe 4-5 people in the whole class, including myself, that were really dedicated to photography and tried all sorts of crazy shooting and printing techniques. We even developed a 5-10 minute rapid film development; it's supposed to take 40 minutes. It was kinda like photography Bauhaus. We pushed each other to take artistic risks and really experiment with the medium. I honestly miss that phase of my life. College photography was much more structured, especially on the processing side. I miss the darkroom, the smells, the quiet, the dim light...
My aunt is a photography teacher at my old high school. She does all kinds of cool shit like this with her students and at home.
I think I'm the only kid that's ever taken her class that didn't like it lol
Cyanotype is so cool! I'm really hoping to "print" some fabrics using cyanotype this summer 😁. It'll naturally fade for sure, but the beauty of it for me is that I can redo the process with different designs on top so it's a constantly changing, layered process that tells the story of whatever clothing I'm using 🥰

I lost track of Polaroid after so many sells and buy outs. And I now see that they’re back from China and went to the Netherlands and they’re back at doing film. What a roller coaster!
Well, the American Polaroid ceased to exist in 2008 and then 3 Dutchmen created "The Impossible Project" who bought the Polaroid brand and IP for 3 million USD in 2017 to continue Polaroid as Polaroid Originals and in 2020 as Polaroid B.V. just to keep things simple.
This guy is an absolute mastermind.

It smells like mustard plants, garlic or horseradish. Also, it's absorbed through the skin causing blistering and chemical burns. It could be deadly, but the idea is to cause injury that requires lengthy medical treatment, effectively disabling the enemy and tying up its resources.

This is so cool! I remember The Impossible Project released something similar back in 2014, but their film was very experimental and unstable. Might give this a go if Polaroid have perfected the formula now!
It seemed like an impossible project, but Polaroid is alive and well.
Primo! Thank you! Always fun!
Had a coupla Polaroids back in the 70s, they were... interesting, tended to tint towards brown.
Im so happy polaroid film is still produced and its cool that they now even have the polaroid name
I'm reminded of old story (true or not?) about soviet dignitaries invited to British aircraft production facility. The Ruskies were able to recover metal shavings from their soft sole shoes, thus enabling the analyzing of the shavings by Soviet engineers.
While watching the other video I'd kind of figured the light-blue paste would surely not be enough to be RGB sensitive. Seeing this light-blue B&W film (which is indeed a wonderful colour, one of my favourite shades of blue) product announcement makes that make waaaay more sense. At a guess I'd say it's still silver-based like regular B&W film, since colloidal silver can cause that same blue colour in people's skin.
so cool that you have been in the netherlands for this. I hope you liked being there
i'd like to see you make your own black and white film. i think it'd be easier to make an orthochromatic stock as they don't include the crystals that are sensitive to red light. meaning you can create the film and develop it under a red light. it also gives a brilliant contrast effect. i have no clue how long it'd take to make the crystals, put them on celluloid/paper using a gelatin and then doing it so successfully that you can take passable photos but the people down at ilford coulld probably help you with that.
There's only one factory?!
If I remember it correctly, there are actually two factories involved in the process of making a Polaroid.Everything, but the film-negative gets made in the Netherlands. The negative itself is made in Germany and later shipped to the Netherlands.
''I'm straight up not a criminal" got me falling off my bed
