    I feel bd for Godrick , seems like he was born lesser/weak compared to his kin cause hes not a direct descendant of the golden lineage, so most of his siblings would surpass him just from birthright alone. He probably feels like he was born as the runt of the family which kinda sucks just simply due to birth right , its no wonder why hes so cowardly: hes probably been scared all his life due to the fact that he probably cant defend himself should one of his own "kin" attack him. The cirumstances of his birth were unfair and its probably why he turned into such a depraved anus.

    Something I think is interesting is that, arguably, you could claim that during the Shattering Godrick was one of, if not THE most brave and cunning, or at the very least there's a case to be made that cowardice and cunning aren't so diffrent until after the fact, and that arrogance can be a bravery all on its own.
    Think about it, when fleeing from Leyndell, instead of fighting a foe, or foes, that he absolutely could not win, he escaped in such a manner that preserved what little strength he had. (And, based upon the description of the mimics veil, he fled while escaping with a not so insignifigant amount of artifacts from Leyndell.)
    Then, he takes Stormveil Castle, one of the largest Castles in the lands between, and holds it against RAHDAHN of all the demi-gods (call it cowardice or strategy, it's a feat either way considering what we know of the Starscourge).
    Then, depending on the timeliness of course, he challenges Malaenia to combat, and based off of the description it would seem he challenged her to 1-on-1 combat. And although he lost, he still fought well enough to not be instantaneously killed by her, and live long enough to plead for his life.
    Which, while cowardly, is the choice to make if your fighting to win, not just for honor.
    And, considering the muddled nature of the timeliness, and that Morgott, who fought during the Shattering, recalls him as "The Golden" it is likely Godricks descent into Grafting happened AFTER all of these things.
    Sickly, weak, and of diluted divinity, Godrick still accomplished a lot for one called foolish and craven.
    I personally think there was a lot more to Godrick than simply cowardice. Perhaps, had things ended differently, he truly could have become worthy of the title of "Golden"

    • @crontonio
      @crontonio 2 года назад +62

      Actually, it would make sense that Godrick would graft right after his fight with Malenia. After all he had a whole army that was willing to fight with him and if you were to do such things as grafting what is known as a vile act then they would've surely lost faith, No? Cause according to some descriptions(If I remember it correct) left him after seeing his downfall.

    Great that you mentioned Godefroy. My interpretation was that Godrick is so pathetic that he couldn't come up with his own technique so he took it from an ancestor. Godefroy was sent to jail and shunned from the rest of the lineage. Scratched out from history, so we never hear about him. He was born into a destiny that he would never be able to achieve. Unlike some of the other shardbearers whose glory is behind them, Godrick yearned for glory he never had and never could have gotten. He hesitated even to take the power of the dragon (only doing so in the heat of battle after already being injured), but once he gets that power he calls upon his ancestors to BEAR WITNESS, feeling in that moment that he had finally lived up to them. Unfortunately, he was in battle with the next Elden Lord, and so, again, he never had a chance of achieving that destiny he felt was his. Call him weak, call him craven, call him a monster, but he only did what he could to live up to the standards that were set for him.

    Interesting note is that Godrick is the only true heir to the throne, as grafting is never told off as being a graceless act, merely feble and deplorable. All other demigods and shard bearers are either against, disconnected from, or have blasphemed in the eyes of, the golden order. Morgot is an omen, and thus is unfit to rule due to his cursed blood, and same with Mohg. Miquella and Melania both rebelled against the golden order and sought to replace it. Rykard gave himself to the god devouring serpent with his goals being to userp the golden order. Renala is unfit due to her lack of royal blood and her unhinged mental state. Ranni is acting out against the golden order, and seeking to over throw it. Radahn has rotted away, and even before, he was working outside of the order for his own benefit. Finally, of course, Godwyn is dead, and Godefroy is imprisoned. Godrick embraces his role in the order, and is sound enough of mind to realize who he is and should/could be, and thus, is the only true heir to the throne fit to claim the title of elden lord.
    I also find it interesting that his form of seeking power, at least through the lense of holism, is far more sacred than the likes of any of the other gods and how they asertain any amount of power for themselves. Is grafting any less valid of a way to seek power than to bind oneself to a blasphemous serpent, or than being born with omen strength and acursed blood? Is grafting any less valid than harnessing the power of the stars or than harnessing the powers of an alternative rot god? In fact, all other demigods who have any amount of power, at least in some way, pull from another outer god, or another such source. The serpent, the dark moon, the stars, the rot, the formless mother, all are blasphemous and non-golden forms of power, where as graphting isn't inherently embracing another god, so, in the eyes of the greater will, may be a more valid, or less blasphemous, alternative to achieving power. After all, Godfrey "grafted" the beast Serosh upon his back, and Marika and Radagon "grafted" themselves into one being. (Both in the non-traditional sense, but still, its bindinf of multiple beings into one.)

He wanted his ancestors to recognize him as a part of their lineage but they never did, instead they ridiculed him and rejected him. Eventually, he took up the disgusting act of grafting for any power he could get. In a last ditch effort to kill the Tarnished he takes the head of a sacred dragon to lend its power but he couldn’t take full control of it (shown by him barely using it for direct attacks when he grafts it to him during the second phase). One thing I found interesting about the grafted scion is that it’s actually a clever double entendre that may or may not have been intended by the developers. A scion in the process of grafting is the young shoot or twig that’s cut for grafting, however a scion is also a descendent of a noble family, and since godrick and his followers took to grafting to cement their power it makes sense that the grafted scions are actually godricks nobles.

    Actually in his first cutscene, Godrick refers the dragon as foremost of the dragons and his kindred spirits. But note that it is not a true dragon but a wyvern with two wings and two legs, a real dragon would be much bigger with four wings and four legs.. He definitely sees the dragon as his kindred spirit as they are both seen as rip offs of the original family and our less powerful.

    Unless there’s additional context I’m missing that tells us Godrick wants to return to *Leyndell* “bathed in rays of gold,” I think this actually hints at a connection between grafting and the real source of power of the erdtree’s (or Greater Will’s, really) chosen gods and Demi-gods. Long story short, I think that grafting is a poor attempt to mimic the way the erdtree (the source of the Golden Order’s power) developed its own power.
    I’ve been rolling this idea around in my head for a while, and I’m starting to think it’s more than coincidental connections. From what we know, no one truly “dies” in the Lands Between due to the death rune being removed from the elden ring. Instead, those who “die” return to the erdtree (if they’re worthy; otherwise they basically roam around undead). From all of the corpses we see entangled in the roots of the various erdtrees scattered around, and especially from the living jars we see shattered around every minor erdtree (who, as we know from Alexander’s quest line, are basically pots filled and empowered by warrior-corpse soup), it seems like the erdtree(s) actually grow by integrating people who would otherwise be dead into its own being.
    This last part is somewhat more speculative, but I’m convinced that the erdtree (and by extension the Elden Beast, and the various descendants of Marika, whose original divinity was granted by the Greater Will via the erdtree) developed its power by integrating little bits of power from every living thing that died near its roots into its own being. Little by little, this added up into enough power that Marika and her descendants, when granted a portion of it, could be considered gods and Demi-gods.
    As for how this relates to grafting, this seems like the desperate attempt of a weak man to recreate the divinity-by-amalgamated-power that his ancestors held/hold. In a way, the erdtree *does* graft people to itself, but Godrick can only mimic this in a much more rudimentary way. This is why Godrick the Grafted is so stuck on this desire to return home bathed in rays of gold. He wants to return to the glory of the erdtree, to the divinity and strength his ancestors held, but which he can only create a pathetic copy of.

    This could be a stretch to say, but I don’t think I noticed it until I fought Godfrey near the end: Godrick was not only obsessed with power, but he went so far as to make himself a grotesque mockery of the family member he idolized. Im pretty sure he and Godfrey are the same size and he even wields an axe similar to how Godfrey does. However, like you mentioned, Godfrey was so powerful and brutish as a tarnished that he sook out Serosh to quell his bloodlust and humble himself, while Godrick was so meek and cowardly that he performed inhumane actions like grafting to mimic a fraction of his relative’s power, even grafting an “ancient dragon” (which I’m sure is just one from Dragonbarrow that was afflicted with rot based on the sores. Ancient Dragons are NOT that small and have that dreaded red lightning) just to get an edge.
    But hey, if he’s the weakest of the demigods, that’s no small feat given how hard he hits the tarnished. Not to mention EVERYONE gets humiliated by Melania, so I feel for his groveling for mercy.

    If Godrick could harness his inherited Great Rune himself he would’ve attained the power that was rightfully his. That’s why his real name is Godrick, the Golden. He possesses the strongest, and most important Great Rune. So when you harness his Great Rune for yourself it amplifies ALL of your powers immensely. So if a Demi-God could harness his Great Rune, given their innate monstrous power, they’d be insanely powerful. Godrick would probably be the strongest. The catch is the Demi-Gods can’t access the true power of the Elden Ring, nor the pieces that they possess; However, a Tarnished can. Which is why the Tarnished were summoned in the first place. The deific lineage that Godrick was so obsessed with is what prevented him from attaining the power that was rightfully his. Realizing this cruel reality he started grafting parts to attain whatever strength that he could. Clinging to his inheritance. So someone (You) came along, and took the latent power from within him.

    The expectation. I feel bad for Godrick, due to the Golden Lineage, he wanted to live up to that. It feels relatable... somehow

    Tbh I don’t blame him for losing to Melania, she probably bullshitted him with water fuck you dance.
    As for him begging for his life and escaping the capital, well as a wise bloody finger hunter once said “you must flee, there is no shame in self preservation”
    Godrick is a 10/10 character, one of the best in the series

    Whats fun about his grafting is that grafting as a process is mainly used on trees. Citrus trees take really well to grafting and can end up producing not only their original fruit but the fruit of whatever tree was grafted to them too.

    • @adis3202
      @adis3202 2 года назад +7

      I thought the Shattering happened after Godwyn's death. So there wasn’t any council left for Godrick to be a member of.
      The blood of Godfrey is the Golden lineage. Maybe Godrick was a distant relative of Godfrey or maybe an illegitimate son of his.

    Two years late but Godrick is one of my favorite characters of all time. I hate/love killing him. Hate it because he's my favorite and I feel bad about killing him considering his story, but love it because using his axe and the grafted dragon you get from his rememberance can let you do some nasty work against enemies. Also, his voice lines are immaculately done. The BEAR WITNESSSS is my favorite. RIP Godrick, I love using the tiny little dragon you dropped.
