How to Reset the Internal Hammers on Your Stoeger Shotgun / Coach Gun

- On today’s installment of SaintAndrewTV’s adventures, we will be resetting the internals hammers on our Stoeger Coach Gun.
The Coach Gun, as the name suggests, was used as the weapon of the passenger on, you guessed it, the stagecoach while transporting whatever cargo they may have. The 12 gauge, shortened barreled shotgun was used for it’s wider pellet spread so it had the ability to hit multiple assailants with With one fell swoop.
Now cleaning it is a whole other animal. Well, putting back together after cleaning it would be more accurate. The internal hammers have to be set in a certain way before reassembling the barrel to the frame and stock. So that’s what I’m going to do.
Hope you all learned something today because I definitely had to look this one up.

Your intro is way too long
Don’t pull the triggers when it’s disassembled! Is the key! It will go together relatively easy, plus I believe it’s not recommended by the manufacturer!
can not thank you enough for this video! info not found in owner's manual!
No problem at all, Hal! Thanks for watching!
I had the same trouble with the hammer tangs. Your video showed me exactly what I needed. Thank you for taking the time to teach.
I’m glad that it helped! Thanks for watching!
We love that intro!
I’m glad! I worked hard on it!
This gentleman was a GREAT source of information on resetting the hammers and reassembling my coach gun after initial disassembly. Could not have accomplished the proper steps without him!!! BRAVO!!!!
Well I’m glad this video was beneficial, Stephen! I appreciate the kind words and thank you for watching!
Thank you, Sir. You know, there is NOTHING in the owner's manual that even comes close to addressing this issue. When I first got my Stoeger, I actually phoned Stoeger Arms because I could not reassemble it. Same issue that you had. They told me "The hammers need to be reset". And guess what they told me to do? Ready? They told me to get on RUclips and watch your video! So Stoeger is actually using your video as instructions to supplement their owner's manual, and is recommending your video to new users, like me. Bottom line? Stoeger is not printing anything about this issue, but using your video as a supplement instruction! You are famous, and deserve a finder's fee from Stoeger for helping them out!
@@stephenhaddon9085 haha! That’s pretty cool! I’ll reach out to them to see if they want to put that video up on their website! That’s awesome! Thanks for the heads up, Stephen!
Been there! Now it time to polish the guts! This thing is tight. Thanks for Sharing!
Great video! Purchased gun and could not figure out what I was doing wrong. Not much info on the web either about this gun. Thanks
Glad I could help, Mike! Thanks for watching!
Question: Does it matter whether the safety is ON or OFF while resetting the triggers? Thanks.
I believe the safety was off when I did this and when you reset them, the safety will reset when reassembling the barrel to the stock
You don't have to do that as long as you don't pull the triggers before you take it apart but if you take it a part and accidently pull the triggers or the triggers are pulled before you take it apart then you have to do this. MY advice is make sure the triggers are not pulled before you take it a part and once its a part don't pull the triggers and you wont have to do this.
Right, but when I take it apart I make sure that the gun isn’t hot. But yes, this would work!
@@kindheart6411 it’s a precautionary measure. I wouldn’t make a habit of storing a gun that’s cocked and ready to go. That was the point I was trying to make.
@@SaintAndrewTV Actually I have these dummy snap caps and I leave in mine cuz sometimes I practice trigger pull with it. I just leave the snap caps in after I pull the triggers and since you have to open it anyway to live load it then its works well.
@@SaintAndrewTV It is better to have it cocked and ready to go, incase a break in happens while at home, every second counts. Plus that's not really good to have to do that to your gun often, chance the pins or something else could get damaged, if you were to slip or something.
Thank You, I had the same question...
Just cleaned my new coach gun this morning. Had the same problem trying to reassemble. Quite truthfully I can’t tell you how I got it back together. Now i realize it has to be in the cocked position to reassemble. Whew I was freaking out. Thanks for your tip though, it will help out next time. I could get the barrels on by moving the release lever, but couldn’t get the hand guard on!😢
Glad I could help!
This video addressed my exact question. Very helpful
I’m glad it helped!
Super helpful. Thank You
You’re very welcome, Roy! Thanks for watching!
Classy, loved the video. I was cleaning my stoeger 20 GA uplander after a Pheasant hunt and luckily I found this video I was able to reassemble with ease.
Well I’m glad I could help, David! I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Thank you
No problem!
Thank you for your help, this is my first side-by-side and couldn't figure out why the barrel wouldn't attach.
No problem! I’m glad I could help!
You need to engage the action release while assembling the gun. It does not matter what state the receiver is in, fired, unfired. Hope that helps.
Almost like information that should be included in the owners manual.
Don’t get me started. I panicked the first time it happened. I thought it was manufacturing error.
I went through half an hour if stress for nothing lol thanks so much for the video
I think we all did at one point! Haha! I’m glad this helped!
Just purchased the Stoeger 20GA Coach gun. During the initial cleaning I wanted to take the pressure off the hammers springs so I pulled both triggers while covering the pin ports with a gun cloth. Both pins protuding so I was successful. Then came the dilemma. A quick search brought me to you. Thanks for the lowdown on resetting the hammers. They are reset and I now know more about my wife's new double barrell.
I’m glad that the video was helpful! Thanks for watching and enjoy that new shotgun!
I had a bitch of a time finding a 20GA but finally bought a Supreme ...would not ever sell it
Thanks, you solved my problem.
No problem!
Nobody has explained this that I've seen...now we know how to reset it..thanks !!
Glad this video helped!
You have no idea how much this video just helped me.... thank you so much!
I’m happy it did! Thank YOU for stopping by!
I made a rookie blunder when I got my 20 gauge home. This video helped me set everything right. Thank you.
No problem, friend! If I made the video, I’ve made the same mistake! Haha
Thank you soooo much.
No problem!
Just now used this trick and it worked GREAT. Thanks
I’m glad it worked out for you! Thanks for watching!
I learned this the hard way before I knew about recocking the firing pins. Showed up for a cowboy action match and couldn't get the barrels on my gun. Luckily another Stoeger shooter was parked next to me.
Thank you
Very good. I like you’re old west suite.
Thank you, friend!
Does the reset also work for a single trigger?
I’m not sure. But I don’t see why not.
Dude thank you!!!!
No problem, brother!
Do not pull the triggers once you’ve taken it down. You will not have to reset the hammers.
great helpful video
Glad I could be of assistance!
You don't need to have the hammers cocked to reassemble a Stoeger or Boito SxS as long as you hold the release lever across.
Thank. As always very informative. This Thursday I'm about to purchase a new Stoeger 12ga
I’m glad! Thanks for watching, partner!
No need to reset the hammers in order to reassemble. Just hold the barrel release and mine pops right back in place.
First time I disassembled my 20 Guage double barrel I had the same question. Thanks for confirming I am doing it right now.
No problem, Willem! Glad I could help!
Thanks a lot, this video made my day.
Glad to hear that!
Thanks for the help!
My pleasure!
Damn nice outfit....would love it in all black.
Thank you very much, Dan! You can get that coat in all black! South Union Mills has them in a few color ways!
@@SaintAndrewTV Thank you ,Sir. Great video.Saved my ass. Many small islands here on the coast of Maine require shotgun only for hunting.
@@danheino7006 No problem!
Why would you pull the triggers when the gun is disassembled that's all on you there's never a point in time that you will ever have to do this unless you pull the triggers when the gun is disassembled I believe you were playing with your gun while it was disassembled and you didn't know how to reset the Hammers
The hammers reset when you close the gun, so they’re live. Flip the safety and the triggers can be pulled and the hammers will come up. Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t store or clean my guns will live triggers, even when unloaded. It creates bad habits and dangerous situations. That’s why you fire them, then store it or, in my case, clean it. That’s why you need to reset the hammers.
The Hammers reset when you open the barrels you are creating more headache for yourself if you can't tell that that gun is unloaded when cleaning it that's all on you you just seem to be teaching bad habits but whatever you do you do you
@@jesseheilman Stoeger’s RUclips channel has a video on this. This is a common problem responsible gun owners have because it just doesn’t work quite right.

What doesn't work right?
Like any other break barrel shotgun the Hammers reset when you open the barrels
