    Yep they are great reels
    I have the Daiwa BG 5000
    And it’s an absolute animal. I’ve brought in everything to monster snook. 90+ pound tarpon, 6 ft shark off the beach. Cudas king fish.
    It’s really a incredibly strong reel for the size being a 5000 and the affordable price

    The 1500, 2000 and 2500 sizes are great for freshwater fishing as well. I use a 2000 for finesse bass fishing and I was surprised how much I like that reel.

  • @BassManStrikes
    @BassManStrikes 6 лет назад +13

    The smaller sizes are excellent for freshwater as well. I use a 2500 for bass and pike fishing in wisc.
    I also found if you don't like the big paddle handle you can interchange handles from some other Diawa models. You can even take the handle from the 2000 and it works great on the 2500. The handle from the Ballistic also fits perfectly.

    Definitely best reel for 100 right now. I own 3000, 4000 and 5000 size and can tell that starting from 4500 and up, the rotor design are different from smaller size, It's more like the rotor from saltiga (but not made from zaion) and feel way stronger with less flex than smaller size rotor. And to mention that the rotor brake is awesome on my 5000, casting 80gr jig for shore jigging all the time the rotor wont move at all. One thing to remember though, the reel doesn't have sealing on the body so just don't be clumsy and drop it in the water or careless enough to fish on raging wave, and always rinse and dry after saltwater trips.

    I've got a Penn Battle II 8k, Stradic Ci4+ 4k, and a BG 6500 as my reels on the 3 main setups that I fish with and the BG is far and away my absolute favorite and has hauled in (and up cliffs) plenty of fish. So much value for my money.

    Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

    I sincerely love everything about my BG 4500 , this reel has it all , Power , good drag , line capacity and have actually dunked my reel under water when Surf fishing and continues to spin like butter and when comparing it to my Shimano Stradic Ci4 , Shimano Saragosa and dare I say it.... Yes my Shimano Sustain! The BG feels like a better reel in my personal opinion , a bit heavier than the others but a much better reel for the money.

    I bought the BG 3000 and the BG3500. Love them like I love my trusty Stradic FJ 5000. One mistake I made though. The BG3500 and BG4000 are the same size/strength reel just with different spool sizes. If you plan to use 20lb braid get the BG3500. If you want to use 30lb braid get the BG4000. Not a huge deal but I was annoyed a bit at only using like 240 yards of 30lb Max Quatro Power Pro which comes as 300yd. Not a problem if you can afford the braid you prefer in very large spools like the 1500yd option. Also I searched online for just the BG4000 spool since I'm sure it fits my BG3500 reel, but so far I could not find it. Probably because these reels are still very new. (January 2018) These reels kick ass. So much that I worry the low prices may go up over time and I need to buy more of them now!

      +UncleBully2000 great insight, thx. similar strategy as the sustain, shared bodies and deeper spools across a few sizes. good job buying early; i bought a nib bg60 right when they were discontinued for about 75, now they're tough to find under 100. can't beat quality gear👍

    My favorite feature of this reel...You can just remove the bail trip ramp to make it a manual.(You want any reel to last longer?...treat it like a manual) Plus you still get the added benefit of the rotor brake that engages when you open the bail. That is a unique feature. I usually have to pull out bail trip levers and file them down.

      +mrtoady2 great insight, thx👍

    • @ChiefToad
      @ChiefToad 6 лет назад

      You got it. The only negative of removing the spring/trip assembly is you lose the resistance of the friction break. I think. Which doesn't really make a difference, but I like that feature. Either way works well.

    • @ChiefToad
      @ChiefToad 6 лет назад

      It's there so the handle doesn't swing around on you, to avoid premature bail closure on a big cast. And ya, it also helps with that...I do get distracted while casting from time to time and forget to close the bail.

    I just got my BG 5000 as my Xmas present, I haven't got to use it yet, that Xmas thing!! Your review was one of the reasons I went with the Diawa. All the reviews liked the BG. My rig is only for Crabbing. I don't use the spinners for boat fishing, I use Diawa with the depth counters. Due to my wife wearing her Xmas gift already I may be using my new rod and reel right after Thanksgiving.
    Reason for choosing the 5000 was I wanted it to be full manual on the bail. I have seen and done the cast with a closed bail accident. Operator malfunction!!

    Great fresh water reel. My 4000 seized after 4 hours of salty breeze not salt water, a couple of decent fish, and maybe lightly sprayed once by a boat wave. Not for salt water. For the same money I got a stellar Shimano Spheros with a IPX8 body, 50% more drag, and more comfortable reel knob: no contest. Forgot to mention the sup par bail.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  7 лет назад +1

      +Die Hard Fishing yup, that's the oem bail design. i suspect the reels designed for charter/commercial life with noobs in mind who might be constantly auto-tripping the bail, so it catches the line as easy as possible. also that design allows for constant drops on rails, deck floors, etc - on contact the bail would deflect upward and open the bail vs bending it inward. my original d1300 has a similar bail, just not quite as severely angled.

    En mi opinión si es pesado no funciona. Un Stradic o un Sustain 5000 cuestan el doble de , pero ud pescara mas y mejor, con el dominio del brazo restringido y la precisión de un peso menor. Yo Pesco spinning hasta 6 horas en un día normal y más horas cuando es un día intenso. Para los pescadores como yo, es mejor tener 1 buen carrete ligero bueno y no tener 3 carretes pesados, es solo que no funcionan para mi estilo de pesca. Entiendo que un joven pescador con días de pesca de 45 minutos a 1.30 horas está bien, si puede servirle. Por mi parte, ese tipo de carretes pesados son dinero en el aire ...

      i guess i'm on the fence regarding mag oil. any surf reel eventually gets to the point it has to be serviced, mag or not. the procyon seems like an upgraded BG, but with the mag oil you got to factor in a $50 service turnaround through Daiwa each time. if you can eat that cost, it should be a great plugging reel.

    Great review Ish. Thanks. I'm not so sure that the size of the bail arm is a problem (compared to the Penn), given that the Daiwa is stainless steel, which is a far more durable and stiff/strong material than aluminium. Using aluminium to make the bail arm necessitates a thicker wire diameter, as its a very malleable metal.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад

      great point, thx for the feedback. personally i like the feel of the thicker bail when my wet numb hands are searching for it, plus the bail mech spring on the penn reels is pretty solid, the bg a bit softer. all in all, both high value reels.

    Need some advice...I have the Cabela inshore 4000 designed by Diawa for Cabela. It's almost exactly the same in looks as this reel except the bail wire is stronger and the bottom place looks to be a little different. I am however convinced that for all practical purposes it's the same reel. I've used my reel once and it worked perfectly. I put the reel in the back of my SUV and tried to use it a few days later and the spool stays on free spin no matter the lever position. I took the spool off and things seem to be in order however I won't take the other screws out of the reel because I don't know what I'm doing, lol. Any ideas at all why the spool stays on free spin? What's strange is the reel was never touch from when it did work correctly to when it didn't work, I'm puzzled. If you can help I surly appreciate it. I bought this reel and kept it for over a year before I used it for the first time so I doubt there is any warranty.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад +1

      hard to diagnose without the reel in hand. if the spool is free spinning, could it be you just didn't seat it all the way down the shaft? does the drag cap tighten all the way down and click correctly?

    • @MartinFluteCompany
      @MartinFluteCompany 6 лет назад

      Ish With Fish, thank you for the reply. Yes, the spool is seated, the drag tightens down as designed. I used the reel it was fine then put it in the back seat of my SUV, picked it up again to use it and it didn't work. I didn't drop it, throw anything on top of it, nothing. It worked and then it didn't. Anyway, thank you for the hand here, much appreciated.

    The 4500 size and up, the spool lip is too big for casting and it has thin edge, not a good design, nick and dented easy, as the old BG spool lip is thick. I don't think it can take the beat-up like the old BG and old Penn Spinfishers. I fish at the jetti and my new BG 8000 already has a nick on the lip of the spool ( again, bad design). My Penn 7500ss catched many big fish there and the reel did not have any dent or nick on the lip and that is the most important and vulnerable part/area of the reel. It directly affects your casting and renders the reel almost useless when it has a nick. I have the 4000, 4500 and 8000. I was looking into the line capacity and price when buying them (got spooole at the jetti with 100lb/250yards braid on my Penn 7500ss, that would be a trophy fish). I rather go with the Penn ssv 8500 and 65 or 80lb line instead of the bg 8000. Just for you info if you do the kink of fishing that I do.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  6 лет назад +1

      great feedback, thx so much. i didn't consider the spool casting lip; my BG60 and 8500SS are built like tanks and you're right, the spool lips are super burly. i see you suggested the SSV as an alternative, but is there another reel you recommend in the same price range as the BG ie 100 USD or less?

    Prior to watching this BG review I watched your review of the kastking kodiak and I'm a bit confused. It seemed like you were more complimentary of the features (bail wire size, etc.) and performed a more comprehensive test of the Kodiak. Considering the similar cost of the 2 reels, I'm curious as to the features on the BG which convinced you to declare "the Daiwa BG is the world's best value saltwater spinning reel" over the Kodiak.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  7 лет назад +1

      hi, you actually caught me online while i upload my bg vs battle ii vid, should be live tomorrow or monday :) and great question! ... you're right, i was impressed with the kodiak, and tore it down because 1) it was a freebie and 2) no one had ever done it before. it has a lot of features i really liked, except maybe the line capacity (the 5000 is more like a 3000/3500), drag performance (kinda sticky, i wish kk piscifun amazon retailers et al would bench lower in favor of better discs), and bearing durability (line roller bearing failed a few months after the review, although kk sent replacement bearing kit in 2 days, makes me wonder when body bb will fail). for $75, it's still a great value imo (my $120 abu revo s spinner is garbage compared to it). the BG exceeds it though in every way, PLUS it's part-supported; after initial warranty is out, it'll be easy to find replacement parts. until kk is big/old enough to have a competitive parts distribution channel, the product support beyond model eol is questionable, and subtracts value over the life of the reel (for ex: you can still find oem Black Gold parts online, the BG will follow suit, but good luck finding kodiak I parts in 5-10 years). not to mention the BG's minebea bb's, the ATD drag stack trickled down from Daiwa's higher-end models, no mag-seal headaches (yay!) the massive main gear, etc. plus(!) i've noticed they've dropped in price everywhere, and can be found nib for the same price as the kodiak. that said, objectively, imo the new BG is not only the better buy, it's the best buy (just a youtuber's opinion of course, but check out the alan hawk and wirecutter links in the description for further industry testimonial). thx for the closing compliment btw, i hope the info i share is useful to anyone watching.
