    The size numbers do not correspond between the different reel companies, so that kind of comparison is apples-oranges. The Daiwa 4000 size is most comparable to the PENN 5000 size. The PENN 4000 size is most comparable to something in between the Daiwa 3000 and 3500.

      I agree with this. I have several Daiwa's 4000's and wanted a new 4000 size reel. I bought a Penn 4000 on Amazon not seeing it before I bought it, thinking it would be the same 4000 size. Wrong. The new Peen sitting beside my older Daiwa 4000 makes the Peen look like a 2500 size. Upon first seeing it I thought it was a 2500 mislabeled as a 4000. Seems manufacturers sizes aren't the same across the board. Not dogging the Peen reel, its smooth and for the price is a great reel, just too small for me to take surf fishing on the OBX. Something to consider when purchasing.

    *Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

    I've found that the daiwa bg is more comparable to a size larger penn reel. A bg 4000 is very similar to a battle 3 5000 in terms of size, weight, drag, line capacity

  • @jasonstokley7274
    @jasonstokley7274 3 года назад +8

    Reel sizes from different manufacturers aren't the same. The Penn 4000 is a significantly smaller reel than the BG 4000. A better comparison to the BG 4000 is the Battle 3 5000. The Battle 3 is heavier, holds roughly 30 yards less line, but blows the BG away in lbs of drag at 25lbs.

  • @gabrielduarte3904
    @gabrielduarte3904 3 года назад +7

    as someone else pointed before, the sizes are not even comparable, i think both reels are great, i like the machined aluminum gear on the penn reel, but on the other hand, the size and quality of the cast aluminum gear of the BG is second to none. and yes, you should compare real reel equal sizes, not size numbers.. that is why they mismatch so much in weight, drag and line cap.

    Great video…Two years old but something worth saying is that both of these reels will last and you can get parts for both Daiwa and Penn. Penn parts are relatively easier to find locally but Daiwa will get you any part you need too, shipped out to you. I don’t fish Shimano reels anymore due to the problem of not easily having parts available.

    If I'm throwing artificial in the surf, I think a better option than both of those is the Shimano Nasci 5000. Same price. The Nasci also has a seal at the base of the rotor, which does a good job of keeping salt water from entering the gear box.

    The question i have is about the bearings. I like the added line capacity of the diawa. However, I have never went surf fishing. I am looking for my first surf fishing reel. Are the sealed bearings of the Penn reel a better option for extending the life of the reel. I'm assuming the sealed bearings would mean the reel should last longer? I will only be using the reel for surf/saltwater fishing about once per month or so considering I live about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the closest beach to me. What advice do you have?

    I personally will never buy a Chinese made reel or any reel from Pure Fishing. Of course I only use vintage reels which because of their longevity and durability always get my vote. I currently have 193 vintage reels made before 1980. If you’ve never used a 1950s Luxor Saumon Mer you have truly missed something. Week before last I caught the largest fish of my life on the Outer Banks of NC. It wasn’t a fish I wanted to catch but was a very difficult but enjoyable 30 minute fight. It was a Stingray over four feet across. I caught it with a massive Shimano SSG 7000 rear drag. That vintage reel has 14 drag washers in it. I enjoyed your comparison and what you said makes sense however I have totally disassembled a Daiwa BG 5000 and found it an admirable and durable design. I just don’t like modern reels.

Try going over to someone with real tech knowledge that also breaks down the reels and shows you differences. Not to mention bothers to know what the ht100 drag is. Tackle Advisors is one of the best for reel reviews and tear downs etc. Its also not comparing two reels that use completely different sizing scales and not picking the two closest then giving points for weight or line capacity. Why not compare the 4000 Shimano Stradic to a Daiwa 4000 BG. After all they have the same number duh!?! To bad they are 2x size difference.

    Wanted to share my experience with those reels. I have been using battles since they were just battles. Before the II's and III's. Never had a failure. They just got old. Beat up. Bought two BG;s when they first came out. a 3000 and a 4000. Brand new 4000 had problems from the start. Not sure what the failure mechanism was or what part failed but if I set the hook on a fish and didn't miss the fish, the handle would spin backwards at a high rate of speed. Sometimes striking my knuckles. If I missed the fish it would not do it. The handle would not turn backwards normally. Only on hook set. Sent it to an authorized dealer and it took about 2 months for them to get the replacement part and return my reel to me. This was a brand new reel. So If you factor in reliability I would go with the Penn.

    The Daiwa has anti reverse and Penn reels do not. I use the anti reverse switch at least a dozen or two times each time I fish. I’m not a fan of just loosening up the drag and pulling the line out which is tough on the hands and has to create extra wear on the drag washers. For me, the lack of an anti-reverse switch is almost as dumb as installing the handle on the right side of a spinning reel, casting with the right hand, and then switching hands to hold the rod in the left hand.
    I bought a Penn for surf fishing on a Florida trip a few years ago. Last year I bought a Shimano and left the Penn at home when I went back to Florida.

    What I learned from Penn, Shimano and Daiwa is this. It depends on where in the world you are living. I'm a South African and I can tell you Penn comes at a premium over here. So... Penn you are out!! Funny enough in the 80's it was quite affordable!!! Next comes Shimano... Spares tooooo hard to come by and you pay and wait for repairs. So... Shimano out. That leaves me with Daiwa which is affordable and easy to obtain.

    Daiwa reels run bigger than other brands. A daiwa 2500 is similar to a 3000-3500 in other brands.

    Battle 3000 and BG 2500 are my favorite for slinging lures in the kayak. I have mostly BG’s for surf, bought them for the capacity and gear. Can’t go wrong with either, IMHO.

    Are You kidding right now your really putting a Daiwa reel vs a Penn battle 3 that’s superior to that u need to compare that BG TO A DANG LEWS salt water will eat and destroy the BG I fish in the field a lot and I have destroyed the BG and I still are using my penn Battle3 two years in and that’s salt water kayak fishing, boat fishing , surf fishing and peer fishing. Is see the BG as a lake or pond or river reel they die too fast

    Who cares about the difference in size?? You can go up a size if you need more line. As people have pointed out, you can’t compare one brand 4000 to another brand 4000. People want to know about the difference in build quality and performance. This is such an uninformed video..SMH.

  • @whewdoggie1
    @whewdoggie1 3 года назад

    WHAT! You can't compare reels by manufacturer size! You need to compare by line capacity and maybe drag capacity. A Peen 4000 is a different size from a diawa 4000 and also different from a shimano 4000. This entire comparison is just dumb.

    Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

    Penn are good reels (Sargus ; Battle; Slamer top) but spare parts forget.
    I waited 6 months plus 5 months to have repaired two of my Penn reels. PENN NO MORE.
