The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.
The most comprehensive reel review I’ve ever seen. Subscribing after just one vid.
Thank for your time working with all these reels and giving us a heads up on what to look for in our fishing reels 👍🏼
Your life is a dream job🙌🏼
I look forward to your videos in the future 👍🏼
Oh, I’m a Pann & Shimano guy!
Tough love for my Penns
And smooth love for my Shimano’s!
Thanks again 🤙🏼
New subscriber from South Africa. Thanks for the comparison Ryan, some really pragmatic considerations given in your comparison. Some interesting insights for someone who's been out of it for a couple years. Typically for surf fishing, if you're running a big grinder (here in S.A) filled with Suffix 832/J-Braid or equivalent in the 65lb range (with several hundred meters of Berkley Whiplash Pro backing) targeting big flat fish and sharks. And... they're usually Shimano Saragosa's and up. Shimano always had a great reputation for grinders, more so than Daiwa with Penn in 3rd place. For multipliers, it was always Daiwa (Saltist/Saltiga) with Penn in second place and Shimano in 3rd (especially the newer Trinidad's). The Shimano multipliers were always notoriously hard to cast well, so we magged the spools; which works really well. But we tend to cast multipliers differently to you guys, because we typically are targeting distance when casting in the surf or off rocks into the surf.
So some really interesting insights into the newer models and interesting to see the newer innovations from all 3 manufacturers. You just made me realise I need a new grinder... :)
Great video and very informative. I have been a Saragosa fan for several years. I have several and have had very few issues with them. Thanks for sharing the video.
A very good job…this video is exactly what I was looking for…but in the end I have more doubts then before…
Dude! What a quality review. Legitimately my favorite thus far. I do have some confirmation bias… 🙏🏻
Love these kinda videos keep them coming my man 🎣🔥🤟🏻
Thanks for the in depth comparison. I have an original Stradic 4000 and 2000 that have served me well since the 1990's . Now I need something bigger for fishing offshore and your honest info on the Saragossa has helped me decide that it will be my large reel choice. This video also made a subscriber out of me. Keep up the good work.
Glad you could get something out of the video!
hey did you end up buying the saragosa? if so how has it been?
I’ve got a Saragosa 6000 SWA And around 5 months ago it fell into the the ocean in around 25 meters deep it was down there for around 3hrs because I had to get my free diving gear so I could rescue the setup. this set up is still working perfect and haven’t even had it serviced
That’s insane haha
What gosa do i get for jigging and also soaking bait off the surf in florida but also for dam/spill way fishing in oklahoma ?
Also what rod would i get to go with said gosa ?
@boosted8913
I'd go anything from a 5k to a 8k as anything bigger would be to big
The Saragosa drag clicker is amazing. The Slammer’s is “ok”. The problem I have with my Slammer 5500 is the drag seems inconsistent; e.g. If I loosen half a turn, then turn it back up, the drag might not be anywhere near where it originally was. There are also times where I loosen the drag by like a quarter turn, but the drag got tighter. Weird.
I have all three of these reels, in fact I have had 3 Daiwa Saltist in the last few years. I loved Saltist reels until they gave me problems and were hard to crank. I sent one back to Daiwa service for a maintenance for around 100 dollars and it came back like new. In fact, it may have been a new reel. I have another Saltist that is now inoperable and I refused to spend another 100plus to get the maintenance. The third still works ok but is slowing down, The Penn Slammer is kind of bulletproof and for surf fishing it is a tank. My favorite is the Shimano Saragossa 6000 which I use for surf fishing. It cast well and the return is silky smooth in fact so smooth that sometimes I reel in a fish not knowing he is still on the hook. My vote is the Saragossa and I plan to buy another one for my wife because her Saltist is going down hill.
Yep I have only Shimanos for surf fishing. An ultegra 5500 on a Ninja 11’ dagger and a Serphos 14000 on a Star Stellar 12’. When reeling in fish, sometimes I literally won’t feel them until they hit the shore.
Great video been waiting on this one!
I was waiting for this.good job Ryan
Thanks for watching!
great work i like your detail explanations and comparison :D
Great job Ryan. Just had a conversation with Alec about Saragosa and Saltist MQ last week. lol. What a coincidence!
Hahaha, this one has been a long time coming
You my friend deserves another subscriber 👍👍👍
Great review! Not being able to service the Daiwa myself is a deal breaker for me.
Great Review, Brotha 🤙 excellent details & comparison.
Thank you Sir!
Was a Penn guy for three decades- ditched em a few years ago for Shimano, which I used to not like. I found newer Penn's failing after a year of moderate use. I like the Saragosa and Torium lines.
Glad someone trustable is doing reviews 🤙
Trying to be as unbiased as I can!
Very nice review and very informative I enjoyed the video.
Gosa! I got 8k and love how tanky it feels a quick spray and wipe is all I do after a day of fishing. With my stradic reels I would feel all sick when they would get splashed by waves, with the gosa I still get the same anxiety but I reassure myself with the knowledge in knowing that others before me have submerged it without issue which is a huge reason I switched from stradics. Love the Saragosa, loved Shimano all my life, as growing up all of our fishing gear was Shimano. Great video mahalo for sharing.

I've got a saragosa and a slammer. Very happy with both. Never got my hands on a Saltist (to really fishing). The slammer stopping power is crazy and I love the fact that the compact ones do a great job for big fish.
which size is your slammer? Is it a III or IV? Thank you
@@badmaxx slammer III 4500
Fantastic 👏👏 waited a long time for this comparison
I am a hard nut of surf beach fishing in Australia. I got a Penn Slammer 4 because I had to wait for the Daiwa to be repaired.... So the Penn Slammer 4 has been slammed by waves, immersed fully into the water, dropped the slammer 4 into the sand. There were many times I cringed. This was after 1 year of use and only a rinse over each use (with the line roller always lubed and opened and cleaned) and the funny thing it needed a little clean up of a bit of a little sand and some new grease. Took me 20 mins $0 thanks to Ryan for showing me how to pull it apart. It just gets better each use.
Hi, great vid and thanks for taking the time to do it, question, witch of these would you feel best with for so. Calif. Yellowtail fishing, and I'm looking at like a medium fast power set up, also was thinking just adding a ugly stik to that reel, thanks
I think I own 26 Penn reels, probably only 16 or so are spinning reels though. None of the spinners are newer than a spinfisher III. If I ever wear one out, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the one tested. I prefer to service mine myself.
nice detailed, honest review.
i got the saltist mq 5k last week and love it
Love your work mate, I have subscribe and liked your videos through my other account. Your reviews videos are the best. The way you pull the parts and put them back, is absolutely sick 🥃So,Could you please also do a review of Daiwa Certate SW?
I just bought 2 5k saragosa reels. One for me and one for my boss. He’s more of a friend but he also employs me and gave me a decent Christmas bonus so I decided to buy him a decent reel but not super expensive
I have the penn slammer III which i use for pike and i also have the daiwa saltist 8000 wich i primarily use it for yellowfin tuna.
Daiwa saltist 8000: great line capacity (i have over 300 M of 80 lb braid and about 5ft of 60 lb mono tied to the braud using an FG knot great reel for surf casting and popping, and great drag
Penn slammer III: great line capacity ( i have 250 M of 40 lb braid and about half a foot of wire (which im targeting pike with) decent amount of drag
This both of my reels
In my opinion you should choose the reel that fits your style of fishing.
The black reels get super hot in the sun here but seems like a lot of the best options now are black or black and red etc.
hands down saltist. had one for many years has not failed me yet. I have 4 now
Informative thanks!
For the money, the Gosa is probably my all time beater reel champ. I do want to try the MQ series reels.
I happen to be a fan of the Slammer IV. Yes, I have replaced the line roller bearing due to it making noise. It's a $15 job after shipping. No problem.
Thought I was the only one smh I gotta replace it again after a year
Great video bro💯
Great job with an unbiased breakdown, however I would have liked to hear a comparison of how much each weighs and is there a substantial difference in line capacity?
Daiwa for most line capacity and Penn for heaviest. That’s usually how it goes. I’ll look it up though.
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for
Made it just for you ;)
@@RyanMorie I knew it
Good video man 👍
I just bought a Saragosa 10k and 25k - super happy with both. The drag on the 10k is absolutely nuts (best sound ever). The reels that the Saragosa's replaced are Penn slammer 2 and Daiwa BG 8000. I really don't miss the penn, but I have to say the Daiwa BG even though it was 5 years old and never serviced, it was smoother than the brand new Shimanos and I find it lays line better.
(I fish mostly for medium to large sturgeon and GTs when I travel down south)
Thank you for a Very good and accurate review @Ryan Morie ... you (and A.Hawk) are actually part of the reason I got my saragosa reels and it was difficult AF since I live in Canada :))
Glad I could help!
first canadan to catch a gt?
Hey, are you the right guy to tell me if it's worth going from a daiwa bg 8000 to a saragosa 20000 or 25000, do you think it would have a lot more drag power to take out big fish or would the bg 8000 do this job very well?
@@leonardoloureirocaldas6647 Both the 20k and 25k gosa's have 44lbs max drag and the BG has 33lbs max drag. It's really up to you if you feel your BG is at the limit, then make the change, otherwise, the BG is a very well made and capable reel for most situations. I would not suggest getting the 25k though, the reason being, on paper the weight difference seems small vs the 20k, but when casting for extended periods of time for me at least it was way more tiring than the 20k. Hope this helps with your decision.
Wow, fantastic review, You are thorough and explain all quite well. Subscribed. I'm goin with the slammer I think, but a 3500 slammer 4 for fresh water, river and lake trophy striper hunting . The drag. Line capy and looks.i like the all metal body and rotor. Best looking of the 3 too
Thanks for watching!
Thank you great video. If my slammers fail going try the shimanos. Would try diawa but not a big fan of a company not allowing me to work on something I own.
Do they not sell the tool to open the MQ body?
Great review Ryan!...For me personally as a huge Daiwa fan, I can't see sending out a $300 plus Saltist MQ every time it needs service. For the Saltiga definitely but not for a reel in that price range. The MQ is better than the BGs but I'll stick with my BGs because of service.
Scam
Just got the Saragosa 6000 paired with the Shimano Terez rod!!
ΣΣΣΣΣΩραίος αλάνι!Τρομερή παρουσίαση!
Maybe a mention about the pit design on lay & cast would be interesting 🤔
Thanks for the review... ill be picking up a Saragosa 8000... What rod would u pair it with... itll be mostly used with poppers snd stick baits.
OMG been waiting for this video, this determines what my next reel will be.
Hope this helps you make your choice!
Ryan you never disappoint!!! I was waiting for this all along!!! Thank you brother.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Ryan, I replied to your message. Am I the winner?
i am newbie. after listening to ur video. i will buy penn. looks more tough and easy maintain. thanks for the video
You should do some reviews on conventional reels, talicas and trinidads with the penn and daiwa counterparts would be great! Much easier reels to work on as well.
Yes
Curious about the slammer DX with it's improved gear materials
Great video as always Ryan. You ever think about reviewing an IRT? Would love to see you tear one apart.
Ehhh probably not, not mainstream enough for me. Sure it’ll catch plenty of fish though!
@@RyanMorie Respect. Keep up the great content
Hi Ryan! No problem with a little warm and fuzzy! Lol! Question tho…what rods are you and Justin using for the Slammer and Gosa?
Thanks for the excellent run-down; can you tell me if you have had a Thunnus stripped down, and your thoughts?
I don’t have enough experience with a Thunnus to give accurate insight
Just ordered the 14k. Pairing with an Avid inshore 15-40#. Do you think that reel is too big? Should I have gone with the 1000? Using it mainly for big cobia and bull reds-bottom fishing giant live/dead baits.
For sure PENN SLAMMER IV. Thanks buddy
My brother and I have always purchased both shimano, penn and Daiwa to test them. Have to say we have had more failures with penn. thought they would be tanks and be worth giving up the smoothness of their counterparts but we have been proven wrong multiple times.
my old saltiga is insane, never missed a beat in 17 years
Keep the co tent coming!
Thanks for the review Ryan. I bought the Daiwa Saltist 4000 last year and it is killing it here on the West Coast. I put 30lb J braid on it with a 30lb fluro leader and I can get fish out of the kelp with no problem. I always have fished Shimano here and still do but Daiwa has come a long way and has caught up IMO. I am considering a Saltist for tuna vs.the Stella. The Daiwa drag system is very smooth. I have no desire to run with a Penn.
Penn by a long shot has the best customer service of the 3.
@freshandsaltyjohnny interesting. If you have a shimano/stella. As long as you own it, even second hand, pay $35 and send it off and they replace everything bad on it. Forever. And within 2 weeks. Sounds like shimano for the win
Hi from Australia, i was looking at a Twin power 5000 and a Shimano ocea plugger 5 pe for stickbaiting and popping for yellow tail kingfish( very dirty and hard fighters) but i think you just might have switched my mind to the Saragosa.
Saragosa is the safe call and If you don't want unfortunate surprises probably I will go for it if that is the only one reel you get. If you have already other reels and want something maybe more risky but potentially more rewarding I will go for the saltist MQ. Me personally for the lack of service shops in my country I will buy the saragosa 14000xg to tackle GT and Spanish Macks.
Buenas Pedro,yo soy de España,no me dedico profesionalmente pero si que realizo mantenimiento y reparaciones a carretes,si te interesa y necesitas algo estoy a disposición. Saludos!
Can't stand with Shimano reels here. Own 3 Stradics FJ/FK and 1 Saragosa, all 3 stradics are death to me. Took out FJ for surf fishing, can't crank the reel next day. Bought FK for 2 weeks, can't reel because line roller bearing issue. Try Saragosa, they keep having endless problem with line roller bearing to the point the guy fish next to me, walk F-out because he can't stand with noise lol. Try Saltist 2016 once and I never look back at Shimano again. Drop this damn thing into ocean and never wash it. It is running smooth. Now, I push all the way to Saltiga/Certe. Truly, love Daiwa reel. They are fun to fish with.
Hello, Thanks for your videos, I have a question for you, daiwa sale magsealed oil directly for repair reels? i can buy this oil?
Good review 👍🏽
Definitly watch your screw on
your saltist mq line roller
It backs off everytime on my 14k
Sucks that this seems to be a trend
loctite will fix easy
Yes, I'll take 1 of each + a Salt X 6000. That should cover it.
Penn for me. Have had others and penn has survived for me. Now my longest and first (one that i actually bought myself) saltwater reel is a quantum boca 50. Has not failed me yet aswell. That boca 50 is my freshwater and saltwater inshore go to. Have caught some nice 34 to 36 inch snook on that one with a hurricane calico jack rod.
I feel like I’m the only person who hates those quantum Cabo’s and bocas had 2 of each blow up within a month. Love my penns they’re indestructible but for stuff like jigging and popping shimano has it down
No Penn for me ever again ! I got a brand new Slam III 750 on line. Rough as hell, I sold it on ebay a week later. Had a penn clash II. Not free spinning and got a grind. $62 for a new main gear that should have never worn, garbage. Okuma's are like butter at a fraction of the cost and easy to fix.
@@matthewmercer2477 every okuma reel that I’ve owned touched saltwater once and was useless immediately after. Cheap garbage
Penn has issue drag
My friend told me about penn spinning reel. He don’t comeback to penn. Penn has issues drag when kingfish fight, after 2 year unuses, penn stop drag . No good
Correct me if I am wrong but the bail on The slammer 4 is titanium, as well as the spool shaft. Not hollow either it's just the size they decided to make it.
Can you recommend a reel repair service to fix a bunch of old spinning reels?
What size shimano reel would you recommend for big gt fishing
I look forward to using my Saragossa 8k...
Consider keeping a permanent chart of all reels reviewed and updating as required so we will see which reels move closer to 100 %.
Great video, congratulations!I am either of buying saragosa8000 or saltist mq8000 for shore jigging.I already use saragosa6000 and i am very satisfied.Unfortunately shimano doesn't bring the 8000model in Greece, and i im worried about finding spare parts if necessary...About saltist i am worried about the service...is it as reliable reek as shimano saragosa?what do you think? Thanks!keep up the good work Ryan😉
I have a Slammer IV 5500 and with how much of a beating it’s been put through over the last 6 months it hasn’t given me a single issue also with some of the larger fish I have fought it man handles them when I see other anglers on the pier struggling with smaller fish with more expensive or even larger reels sometimes I will say it is fairly heavy so I wouldn’t want to throw it 100 times in a day the drag sound is also amazing if it’s setup right
U should do spheroes swa penn spinifisher and daiwa bg MQ, great video
A version of this is in the works
@@RyanMorie sounds great!
For me it's been and I think will remain shimano, I do all the maintenance myself and find it easy, as well parts are easy to find on web even for older models, I find the wording "smooth" subjective because by smooth you mean light to crank, Daiwa's have always been lighter on the start- and use les power to rotate than Shimano's (true for all ranges, ex: stradic vs caldia same results, but I actually enjoy the feeling of Shimano's more. I replace all my reels handle knobs with aluminum balls on bearings and I find the Shimano's egg knob don't age very well in the eat (South Florida) and become really annoyingly sticky. The opposite of smooth would be rough (like metal grind or high frequency vibrations, noise) which non of the 3 are. Penn makes the best cleaning product in spray bottle on the market, that thing is insane, I go through a lot, I use it for everything including washing my hands after working on the car, I believe it even helps keeping mosquitos away, it's my tee tree oil for engineers and anglers haha. And to finish with another subjective view I would like to say I catch more on shimano's which is the most important to me so they are more of my lucky brand haha, you know need to have that feeling of having an edge or an advantage on the fish or on your mates to keep you concentrate on your fishing action and to believe it's going to happen now from the first to the last cast... Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them!
Thanks for watching!
Gosa is the more proven reel for durability , the best for price , penn the best in quality n servicebilty , daiwa good all around n still magseal thing is a trouble that laying ahead .
I bought a pair of Saltis MQ 6000, they’re over $400 each in Australia, and matched them to Daiwa Saltist Hyper rods. They are sooo smooth, compact, light and powerful. I liked them so much I bought a pair of their little brother Tiera in 2500. I have all three brands and still use a Shimano TLD 15 I bought in 1987 - never serviced it but still smooth and strong. I believe Daiwa spinning reels are the best on offer now, this will change as other manufacturers bring out new models etc.
What Saltist Hyper rods would you recommend for the Saltist MQ 6000
@@Felix-hy2gm I have the Saltist Hyper V2 in PE 2-4 matched to my Saltist 21 MQ 6000 loaded with Daiwa J8, 30 pound braid. They are excellent outfits and I’ve caught everything from Northern bluefin tuna to flathead on them. They’re worth a look.
@@Cammo-vp1gl Is the SALTIST HYPER COMBI JERK S64-2/4 a good option for the reel or would you recommend one of the other models?
@@Felix-hy2gm I can’t help you with this mate, all I can tell you is the gear I bought is brilliant for bottom bashing and casting stick baits.
I have penn and shimano and I use them for different applications. Penn for surf, Shimano for nearshore. I used to have Daiwa until I corresponded with their support and they didn’t impress me. The reel that I’ve turned to lately has been the Tsunami Saltx, would love to get your thoughts on them.
Same here
They look like straight replicas off the van staal reels which are $200 more
👋 hi am a fishing man and I like you videos brother 👍👍👍
Just bought the penn slammer iv 10500 hope I bought the right reel
What do you advise me? Shimano saragosa 6000 or Shimano stradic 6000 ?
Thanks for the review. Many have doubted Daiwa's Magseal when it was released but that technology seems to bring nuance to the spin reel market. Will be curious to see how the MQ tech hold up in the future 5 years as Daiwa implement the tech in more and more of their spin reel series. They obviously have a lot of faith in MQ.
I've been using a standard saltist 4500 hard for about 3 years and its never let me down. The reel is virtually indestructible in my opinion. It has taken on everything from standard bay bass to 80+ lb tuna and held up all the way.
I had a saltist snap at reel base the shamino bail arm broke slammer still lives fishing in far north Australia we use pe10 100lbs up
For price, and usability, the shimano is unbeatable. Id like a penn or diawa but all my other reels are shimano so all my parts and accessories are interchangeable. I’m not one to buy a top of the line stella etc when the gosa does the same thing.
The slammer 3s had the same type of plastic bushing like the saltist does in the line roller. The 4 added the feature
My Slammer 3 4500 has a line roller bearing. I believe they actually changed that after the first run of reels.
They did replace the bushing with a bearing.
I have all 3 reels and use to be a Daiwa man but I like the Saragosa, Penn is crap I would never get another one.
Haha I thanks for your input!
What kind of problems are you having with the Penn? I've narrowed it down to the Saragosa and the Penn so I'm curious.
@@jimcrackery8321 I got a slammer 4 because of it's 'ip68' rating now it makes a weird noise and the drag comes on in spurts which while minor irritations is not really what i expected from premium reel. My daiwa revelery's and shimano's sound better and feel smoother
@@H3ath Thanks for the reply. I see a Saragosa in my future.
@@jimcrackery8321 I love my saragosa, smooth, powerful and the drag clicker noise is great :)
yeah, the Shimano and Daiwa or the Porsche and Ferrari, but the Penn is the Toyota Landcruiser. I sacrifice a bit of smoothness and weight for a reel that goes the distance - Penn Slammer or even Spnfisher IV. I have one I can't kill, it has outlasted my Shimano Stella and i fish them both equally.
I have penn slammer 3 for 5 years I never open and until now working good same as new...I'm just clean fresh water and oil the roller brearing...and that's it..
Is the Gosa SWA 25K the same size and weight as the Slammer IV 10500?
Got a slammer iv 4500 yesterday, got a 5500 slammer iv dx, slammer jv 10500 is my main shark rod, my slammer III hs 6500 is a beast, for the money, just get a slammer in my opinion, if you want to for everything, get a 4500 and a 7500 or 8500, both are great, 4500 will handle all of your drums, pretty nice jacks, pompano, little small of a handle.for surf so get a 5500 for that but I love them all
Best of the best👍👍👍
Penn will be ever remembered as my best partner...won me huge fights 👏 but today I have replaced my old friend 💔 😢 😔 with the new saragosa. Hope it goes well 🙏.

What do the inside materials look like.
I bought few months ago Slammer 4 8500hs, i had tuna on the line about 40kg for 2min, and now sometimes i hear some strange noise from inside.
