Except they're not "defunding" education. In fact, funding increases every year. The problem is that school districts are just not allocating funds in any efficient or effective way -- most of them never even make to the classroom. And the non-teaching staff goes up more than the student population. It's a systemic problem, not a financial one. This is why I cringe whenever Joy Behar says she was once a teacher...which was only for a short time in a galaxy far, far away. Which is why I never listen to her stupid crap.

Yet, I do completely agree with you on the fact that it is a systemic problem. What I take issue with is the suggestion that it's all about what's best for children and their education. They should just admit that school is a daycare instead of pretending to care about the kids and their educational needs.
@@lynnryczek6542 in my state daycares are not running at full capacity; none are fully enrolled or staffed to follow social distance measures. Also, daycares are not free like public schools. Because of that, to require families and staff who attend and work at public schools to provide their own PPE is a huge financial hardship, downright irresponsible. At the bare minimum, the federal government could have figured out how to provide funding for PPE for public schools.

When Meghan feels safe working in the studio with a live audience, I'll feel safe sitting in a poorly ventilated classroom with 30 kids for one hour, rinse and repeat seven times per day. In the meantime, I'm learning all I can about remote teaching.
Betsy DeVos, we have a few questions for you:
• If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid?
• If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days?
• Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that?
• What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid?
• Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay?
• Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that?
• What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long?
• What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out?
• How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid?
• How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer?
30% of the teachers in the US are over 50. About 16% of the total deaths in the US are people between the ages of 45-65.
We are choosing to put our teachers in danger.
We're not paying them more.
We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger.

I'm a liberal and I don't agree with Meghan on most things but she has a point the overwhelming majority of the Democrats are career politicians from elite backgrounds who care more about money like PAC money and lining their pockets than taking care of American citizens. One would hope so. But this woman has been trying to defund public schools and expand for-profit private schools since she was appointed. This is just an excuse for her to try and do it faster. Though it was pointed out to her in a different interview that threatening to cut funding to schools is useless (in addition to being evil) because that's not actually her decision, that would be up to congress.

As a kinder teacher I shake when watching this but that made me laugh! Yes, children's mental health is VERY important. Sitting in a desk and NOT moving with a mask on ALL day for 6 HOURS a day is NOT healthy. They canNOT safely go to specialist, they have to eat lunch in their CLASSROOMS. They can't play with their friends at recess. The kids CANNOT face each other, they CANNOT talk to each other, they CANNOT share ANY SUPPLIES! They won't be able to play games with each other, no learning games NO SINGING. This is NOT going to help their mental health at all. How can I keep my KINDERS SAFE!? How can I get them to come to me with a mask on and peel them from their parents staying 6 FEET apart!?! How can I keep 24 kids 6 feet APART and learning with masks in a room that is already way too small!?! She keeps saying they HAVE to go back to school but she has NO recommendations on HOW. A teacher DIED in California... ALL three teachers were wearing masks, socially distant and they all got Covid.
Taking children to Walmart where they are being watched by their parents is very different from sending them to school where one person is responsible for 30 at a time. And that person must teach them and try to keep them from touching, sneezing and spitting at each other at the same time. And there will be parents who will send their kids with no mask or hand sanitizer. I can't stand when these non educators talk as if they know what teachers are up against.

Kids aren't wired to "social distance" the first thing me and MANY of my friends did on the first day was share hugs and laughs on a social setting. Humans aren't wired that way, but it seems some of us seem to understand the importance. Kids just aren't wired to understand that they can't be "social"

I have a kid with asthma and I don’t feel comfortable sending him to school. School is supposed to start in August and the only thing they’ve send us is a survey, but nothing concrete about what precautions they are taking and how they’re working on having a safe place for my kid and the rest of students.

since your child has asthma, this may be a bad solution as well, but i'm bringing it up just in case. at minute 3:37 in the link below, this doctor says MERV 16 filters are just as strong as N95 masks. maybe that will help your family in case they need it while grocery shopping or who knows what.

Meghan forgets at Wal-Mart and Disney people/customers are moving whereas in a classroom with 24 children, plus 1 teacher we are in the same room for hours breathing in each other's air. Yes when 1 child or teacher is sick, we all catch it. No matter how careful you are. This is from experience multiple times, different school years.

Someone mentioned that we’re only in Walmart for an average of 30 minutes, while ~30 kids are in a small room for 7-8 hours a foot and a half away. Theme parks and Walmart are different from schools.
