I hope we will be able to see yours and other reactions to Queen songs in the future for copyrights will become a problem.
Queen has sold their music catalogue and other rights to Sony for an astonishing £1 billion 😮 (1.27 billion US dollars). The only rights Sony will not retain are those of life performances because Brian and Roger are still touring.
Although Queen never claimed copyright issues in reaction videos because they wanted their music to reach younger generations the future is questionable because Sony is one of the biggest blockers on RUclips ...😢

This controversial music video features the band dressed as the cast of the popular soap opera Coronation Street and has Freddie Mercury dancing with members of the Royal Ballet Theatre. Freddie plays a housewife who wants to “break free” from his constraining life.
This song is about wanting to leave a bad place or relationship in your life and leave it all behind. THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY!!! This song was by John, Queen's bassist, and he was straight, as well as Brian May and Roger Taylor. Freddie was the only "gay" member of Queen, and he was actually bisexual. The cross-dressing video for this was also a parody of an English TV show, not a gay pride statement.
Although music video is often believed to be Freddie's idea, in an interview with Q magazine in March 2011, when Brian May was asked whether each band member’s character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities, he answered:
"Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie’s idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger’s girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women."
Freddie, although shocked that the others suggested dressing up in drag for the video, doesn’t deny that he was actually dying to dress up in drag, and it was something in the back of his mind.
The soap opera parody was missed in the United States, where the video was interpreted as a celebration of transvestism and subsequently banned from MTV, which may have led to the song’s lack of success in the US as compared to the rest of the world. Whereas the parody was acclaimed in the United Kingdom, where cross-dressing is a popular trope in British comedy, it caused controversy in the United States
The musicians dressed as female characters from Coronation Street. Roger Taylor (as Suzie Birchall), Brian May (Hilda Ogden), Freddie Mercury (Bet Lynch) and John Deacon (Ena Sharples).

@@CoachCastTV American entertainment at the time had broadcast many comedic drag performances:
      "Bringing up Baby"
"Some Like It Hot" & "Tootsie" each won Golden Globes and were nominated for several Academy Awards)
Comedians Milton Berle & Flip Wilson were famous for their drag characters
TV sitcom "Bosom Buddies" launched Tom Hanks' career
      etc.
The parody of Coronation St. wasn't understood by American audiences as they weren't familiar with the show or its characters. That lead to confusion and speculation as to why the boys chose to "dress-up". MTV made an ill formed decision and, if anyone bothers to look at its current lineup, is a waste of airtime.

I've heard many Americans online say that this video was NOT banned by MTV. They remember seeing it. It was the Body language video in 1982 that was banned.
It was the musical direction they took with 1982's Hot Space that reduced Queen's popularity in the US. They just didn't like the synth heavy funky sound of that album. Freddie didn't want to tour the US after 1982 either, so that further reduced the band's popularity.

I don’t know if anyone has shared this knowledge with you. Brian May and his father made his guitar (called the Red Special) from things around the house when Brian was a teenager. They used part of a 100 year old fireplace mantle for the neck. Used an oak table, knitting needle, mother of pearl buttons and bike parts. They literally made it from nothing and 50 plus years later it is still his main guitar. John Deacon made Brian the “Deacy Amp” out of things he found in the trash can. Brian still uses it. He had someone try to make another but could never get one to sound the same. Brian said Roger is the only drummer he has ever seen that tunes his drum kit before every performance.

Freddie loved the ballet and used the Royal ballet dancers whenever he had the chance in videos. At any rate John wrote this because there was a movement at that time in England where women felt they were being treated like second class citizens who were living their lives just doing grueling housework with no opportunities or respect. This song was written by John Deacon; hence, it is mellow, as Coach said. Roger proposed to the others that they should dress up in drag, an idea that may have come from his girlfriend, the future Mrs Taylor at that time.
One recommendation for you, which could be a favourite of Coach is the official music video of Princes of the Universe. I am having a busy morning today. I just finished watching this video reaction! I am so glad you enjoyed that mellow tune! I find the music video funny and artistically put together. Freddie had a ballet type segment in this video. Freddie made me laugh when he shook his wig in the beginning, Roger came out looking like a glamorous schoolgirl, and Brian with his bunny slippers and dear John as the grumpy grandmother! HA! Honestly, you have got to love these guys for not taking themselves too seriously. Roger Taylor's then girlfriend came up with the idea to dress in drag and of course Roger brought up the idea to the rest of the band. This song is written by John Deacon, in my opinion, MTV was stupid for banning this video and you are correct Coach, their British TV show was called Coronation Street. I couldn't believe how MTV forgot how our American comedian Milton Berle would dress up in drag portraying a woman sometimes in his skits, oh sure, they had no trouble playing that music video by Ratt "Round and Round" because Milton Berle was in it as a man and as a woman, same thing with another American comedian Flip Wilson would portray a female character Geraldine in his shows, yes too many closed-minded people are correct Coach, I agree with you. It was Brian May in curlers and John as the grumpy grandmother just so you know. I enjoyed your video reaction and I'm looking forward to more! Peace. ☮

I think it was the fact that it was Queen, why the hostility towards them I don't know, but I don't think it was because they were in drag.

This scene through the door is the main character day dream the dancers are no less than the Royal ballet who were excited to be asked.
The old lady in the arm chair is John, and also he is the writer of the song. The dressing up was Rogers girlfriends idea.
They thought this would corrupt the young. It meant they never toured America again while Freddie was alive was alive. Which is weird because it was never banned in eastern Europe or the Christian countries in south America.
The character in curlers was Brian. .

You need to check out the video of Freddie performing (for charity) with the Royal Ballet which inspired the ballet portion of this video - ruclips.net/video/Jh71Cn8ZEzE/видео.html.
What you are hearing is not the original audio of this performance. Sadly, that was lost.
Freddie worked out with the ballet troop for a week before the performance and discovered he had muscle he never knew he possessed and suffered enormously in an attempt to learn ballet. What he (and the ballet troop) discovered was Freddie could not actually dance. What he did during concerts and live performances was to just move to the music. Nothing was choreographed. Turns out Freddie could learn and perform the ballet steps until his music was added to the mix and then he had to let the music drive his movements.
It was a problem but Freddie devised a solution. He told them that he could hold his legs really straight and stiff. The solution was the troop would dance and pick up Freddie as he held his legs stiff and they would carry him around.

I paused it at your opening frame, as I always do, and am greeted with a particular kind of smile UNlike the usual Coach. Yeah, I know what's coming. Or at least I think I do. I was living in LA when this came out-a happy Queen fan of 20 years old, and remember it like it was yesterday. Looking back, I must have been the only one who laughed. I still think it's hysterical. I'm still loving your Queen reactions. I got to thinking recently about songs you haven't gotten to yet, and there are a bunch of must hear ones for sure. I'm not sure what you have requested/scheduled, but in my opinion Innuendo is one to do ASAP. It's a true masterpiece like Bohemian Rhapsody is, even though it's a different type of song. Also, I know March of the Black Queen has been requested by many. To those I'll add these 2 - Spread Your Wings and The Millionaire Waltz (yes, it IS a waltz, Queen style),. I don't need to make your Queen list any longer even though, as you know, their catalogue is huge and most of it is fantastic. Take care Coaches!!! Keep up the great work!!!

    "What's happening?"
Don't know if there is an official "explanation" - Queen tended to let the listener decide for themselves.
I take the middle part as the housewife (Freddie) daydreaming about what they could be if they leave their drab relationship - like a ballet dancer, or what have you. They then are returned to "reality" for the 3rd verse. But that's just me speculating 😉

  • @greenogre22
    @greenogre22 21 день назад +2

the queen members always referred to that song as the one which is the reason why as a group they don‘t blew up that massive in america like everywhere else in the world. i mean actually they‘ve sold 300.000.000 records but are not really well known in the u.s. like for instance the rolling stones. see, their first greatest hits album sold more copies in the uk than any beatles album to this day. research, it‘s true. it‘s odd but banning such a huge group for a song from different radio or tv stations can obviously cause some damage even to queen. but i guess it doesn‘t matter to them anymore.

Thank you! I love this song - and video - so much! Such a shame that MTV didn't get the joke.
It's not as if the US had no history with men playing in drag... Some Like it Hot, Tootsie... Mrs Doubtfire... But evidently, Freddie's parody portrayal of Bet Lynch, one of the female characters in Corry, was a step too far, and was utterly misunderstood.
When the idea of dressing in drag was accepted, Freddie mentioned he was going to shave off his precious moustache, but the others insisted he should keep it because it would be funnier!
I always get a kick out of Rogerina. So pretty... and with better legs than I ever had!

Great reaction. Yeah, as an American myself, I love the video, it's hilarious. Ironically, when Freddie was onstage and he could go and move his own way, he moved so beautifully smooth, and fluid but when he tried choreographed dances (i.e ballet), he'd suddenly have two left feet so to speak. That's why they carried him around like that. In case your wondering, the device beside the bed in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. It's a combination kettle and alarm clock. It's supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly very unstable. Brian and Roger did an audio commentary on this song and its really interesting and funny. ruclips.net/video/jiwz3sBEWcU/видео.html

Every time I watch this video my mind wanders to "I wonder what Brian's hair looked like after a day in those curlers?" I have searched and searched but never found a single photo of it. It had to be either straighter than usual or a giant puff ball. If I ever meet Brian, that is the question I have for him. John wrote this song and said it was about women wanting to break free from their stereotypical roles but not wanting to give up certain aspects of their lives that they enjoyed. The part that bothers me is that drag was not an unfamiliar theme in America. All the way back to vaudeville there were men in dresses, Red Skelton, Redd Fox, Milton Berle and so many others had already done sketches in women's clothing so to be honest, I never understood the bad rap. Certainly Freddie is joking around, he didn't shave his moustache so whatever was putting a bee in someone's bonnet with this video, escapes me.
