"Body Language" was fantastic when performed live. I'm not aware of actual live video but there are several live recordings on YT.
The song actually charted at #11 on US Billboard 100. I don't know who deemed the video unsuitable for Americans but it seems it wasn't the listening audience.
    Thanks.

What gets me about this song, is:
Even if it’s a song I’m not too impressed with…
    Freddie’s vocals are STILL FANTASTIC!😄

Always loved this song. I dig the driving synth bass core running through it, Freddie’s vocals are on point as usual. I get it that it’s not the die-hard Queen fan’s favorite (or the entire Hot Space album), but hey, the times changed, music shifted a bit, they adapted to a degree. I wonder how that die-hard Queen rocker fan would’ve reacted to The Prophet Song and its insane instrument-free vocal section on a much earlier album. Both songs, reviewed separately and with their entire catalog, clearly illustrates a band with intense creativity, pushing boundaries every direction. If only this craft existed somewhere in today’s music. It just doesn’t.

  • @Sassypaws4927

“Body Language” was the lead track (i.e., the first single release) from Hot Space; side B was Freddie’s “Life is Real (Life is Real (Song for Lennon)”), an interesting choice given its contrast to the overtly sexual “Body Language”, which charted rather well in the U.S., peak-wise, reaching #11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (and #25 in the U.K.). Clearly a follow-up to “Another One Bites the Dust”, the collaboration with Bowie preceded it as a one-off Queen ‘45 RPM, a surprise #1 in the U.K. (and in the U.S., at the time? #29).
Tacking on “Under Pressure” to “Hot Space” was clever, if not redundant? The song appeared as a bonus track on “Greatest Hits” in the U.S. 1981 version and is now among their greatest of greatest hits. “Body Language” is perhaps one of the songs that has decreased in popularity over time.
The “Body Language” video filmed in Toronto, Canada, features close-shots of mostly torso-touching mixed male and female dancers writhing about in dark steam (like a gay bathhouse?), whilst the band remained fully clothed amidst the “raunchy behavior”?
Tongue firmly in cheek, Freddie’s concept was intended to push buttons, and he helped the casting process, from the dressed-up black ladies fanning themselves in dance, to the showers to the girl who falls into the enormous cake, surrounded by the dancers in a choreographic circle? Nudity is (sort of?) mostly innuendo.
Flash!back: The video for “Bicycle Race”, wasn’t bisexual in nature, and more silly, definitely more nude (yet far less sexual), and more “racy”, bicycle-wise. BTW - When are you going to watch "Bicycle Race"? ruclips.net/video/r2lT4oE4DxE/видео.html. How often do you get to watch 65 nude female models racing on bicycles?
The “Body Language” music video was banned in several territories, being too racy for MTV, probably on purpose. Nothing like banning a video to pique demand to SEE the video? (Shhhhhh…Don’t talk!) … and its comedic elements were very lost on the American prude-nation.
    *Brian May - 1998 :
“I can remember having a go at Freddie because some of the stuff he was writing was very definitely on the gay side. I remember saying, ‘It would be nice if this stuff could be universally applicable because we have friends out there of every persuasion.’ It’s nice to involve people. What it’s not nice to do is rope people out. And I felt kind of roped out by something that was very overtly a gay anthem, like ‘Body Language’. I thought it was very hard to take that in the other way. It’s hard to talk about this. But there you go.”
    *Brian May - 2003 :
“This is very much a Freddie thing. He was immersed in the gay world. I think it’s very well constructed, it’s deliberately away from the Queen concept.”
    *Roger Taylor - 2003 :
“Not really us but not a bad record.”

I love this song. Queen fans sometimes diss it for it's being out of the renounsed "Hot Space" album where queen quote "stopped being a rock band and started to use too many synthisizers and do dance music". But I liked it since being aroumd 15, and I like it today. Nothing wrong with some nice sexy screeming and this light moaning also passes my screen.
Only George Micheal with his superstar persona could make a sex song cool. in 1988 I want your sex. Freddie was always ahead of his time. this dark weird vid was also band because the world was secretly homophobic in 1982 and many had suspected for years freddie was gay. But it is a dark weird vid and most Queen fans didn't really watch it much. Untill youtube came I was unware of such a clip that was barely promoted passed the year 1983.
But I like this song, upbeat, sexy, different, screamy, unapologetic and.. well to me it is another "get down make love" with a bit different atmosphere. so.. I am used to it and it is nice. at any case I don;t watch that vid and I recommend just listening to the audio.

Well that was fun! Musically not really something that interested me, but Freddies voice on this is fantastic and the video is a hoot. I agree with your take on censorship 100%. Art is always an expression of the creator. It might not be for you, which is fine, and honestly if nobody likes it then there really isn't a problem is there? But a piece of art can mean very much to very few people sometimes, so why not let them enjoy it? I also agree with you Coach, people are maybe a bit too sensitive today. We can't always walk on eggshells around everything and some of the best songs/movies/books etc focus on very disturbing themes that are very much needed to be highlighted. Anyway, don't know where I was going with this, just random thoughts. Fun reaction, as always!
PS. Just throwing it in here so you don't miss it: Lisa is dropping a solo song in a day or two and Babymonster is having their first real comeback on July 1st!

The worst song from their worst album. Between this and the I Want To Break Free cross-dressing they decimated their U.S. fan base. Hot Space was the end of Queen touring the states.
I don't believe Americans were so much being prudish, easily offended, etc as it was simply not what you listen to Queen for. This kind of music is done much better by bands that are (were) built around this type of music. I was shocked when I put the needle on the album this was on, not because of the subject matter but because of the abject badness.

The influence of Freddies confidante Paul Prenter is very evident in this track, the whole album was recorded with a lot of angst, Freddie wanted to do tracks in the funk type category the rest of the band weren't exactly on board.I saw them on the hot space tour where they performed tracks from the album, never to be seen on a live set again Body Language was not one of the songs performed, for me it's just not Queen.

I bought a Pirate Tape of Queen in 1991 which included a number of 12" mixes including a few from Hot Space including this one. The 12" mixes are superior to the album versions.

      @CoachCastTV  3 месяца назад

Yeah, we definitely don't like censorship. We feel it's not right to censor art as long as the art is legal. Obviously some art could cross the line, but we've talked many times about how we don't believe that there can be any such thing as bad words. Words are just words, it's how you use them if they hurt others, and "clean" words can hurt just as much or more than "dirty" words.

Good reaction. Personally, for me, this is definitely one of those songs that can be considered an acquired taste, even though it's better live. That being said, I absolutely agree that Queen was both of and way ahead of their time all at once. I also agree that banning and/or censoring it is unnecessary. Variety is one of the reasons I love Queen-so many choices for every musical appetite! It must have been torture for Dr. Sir Brian and Roger to make the video! Almost every musical "experiment" Queen did before this was a success. They tried so many different styles throughout the 70s, so they must have thought they were musically invincible. This song though was a big flop, especially in North America. I think a lot of people were upset too at the fact that it's almost all synthesized and Queen in the 70s were famously against synthesizers.
Personally I don't mind it. I also like it for a weird sentimental reason. In the summer of 1982 I was a young kid on holiday in Los Angeles. Having just gotten out of LAX airport my Dad went to a car rental place on a very warm humid night (very different from Canada!) at about 1 AM and I heard this song being played on the radio. I thought it was kind of weird, catchy and slinky. It was only many years later when I bought Hot Space that I knew it was Queen.
As an aside too the album was a huge influence on Michael Jackson's Thriller a couple of years later. Funny how one album that flopped so badly inspired the most commercially successful ever.

@@PT9546 I don't mean flop in chart success, I mean the fans reception. Trust me, almost all Queen fans hate Body Language. Even most of Queen hate it too. In fact over the years I've seen such incredible negativity to the album that I find myself defending it, as in stuff like saying it's definitely not their best but not worth the vitriol hurled at it.

It''s just a song, it's not like it did you any serious personal grievance. If you don't like it or even dislike it then that's fine, but 'detest' is such a strong word it seems more in the realm of psychology than actual music appreciation. Or maybe you're just exaggerating for effect.

Queen showed up during the glam rock period. Fancy, glittery costumes, science fiction elements, touches of classical music, and androgynous performers. The idea was the band came across as gay. Anybody in the band or everybody in the band. We, the audience, knew it was all an act. Or did we? Or was it? As Brian said a couple of years ago,"Our glam days are long past." Yes, but they have Adam, who's as glam as it gets. And he is family to Brian and Roger.

@@chicochi3 oh yes, Adam is all glam but he's also gay 🙃 Not that is a problem for me, I just find it funny as band members were all upset about the song and its too much gay connotation but they all loved Freddie and now they like Adam. It shows that it is really art and it's like Roger said on a It's a Hard Life: It is art with a capital F 😅

The song charted better in the US (number 11) than in the UK (number 25), but the video was the beginning of the end for Queen in the US. I want to break free was the final nail in the coffin.

Yes!! This song was the first song banned by MTV (and etched in the Guinness Book of World Records). 😳 On Queen Night: Dancing With The Stars, JoJo Sewa and her partner danced to this song during the Jazz section of the show!! Must confess, it was pretty good! 💃🏻💃🏻

Sorry, I had to turn this off within 10 seconds of hearing it! Brings back those gut wrenching memories of when I really knew back in the day that Queen was no longer for me! Hey, they were fantastic at any genre of music they did. Whether it was the heaviest stuff from the early 70s all the way up to whatever the hell this genre was! Not criticizing their talent just saying that I have no interest in listening to this CRAP lol! Certainly points out the diversity of Queen!

And OK being that you’re taking things quite literally, let’s just say that the song may not be crap but when I listen to it, I personally can’t think of anything else other than crap! And just because I said Queen is no longer for me. Yes, I was aware of what they did right up until their very last moment and some of it I still did listen to. But I will always prefer early Queen… I’m really not interested in discussing this any further so don’t bother to reply. Thanks and have a nice day!
