Apparently Roger Taylor(drummer) then girlfriend really loved a Soap opera called Coronation Street and suggested the band cross dress like some of the characters from the soap!
So this one was not about Fred sexuality, it was written by bassist John Deacon who is a very happy married man and father of six children. The drag part is an idea from drummer Roger Taylor, it was a parody of a british soap called "Coronation Street". This clip was banned on the american MTV who didn't get the joke. And this in NOT a guitar in the solo but a synth played by a studio musician named Fred Mandel although Brian played it on his guitar when they played it live ! You should check their hidden gems, you'll be surpise by their versatility. From hard rock to ragtime, from prog masterpieces to disco funk, from thrash metal (yes there is a song!) to rockabilly, everything they did they did great. The fact the four of them wrote extremely different songs was incredible. You should check out who wrote what. And I'm sorry for repeating myself in my way too long comment, but you really should listen to their songs sung lead by Roger or Brian, not many reactor do that and it's a shame... Hope my english is not too bad (I'm french..)
Am I right in thinking that it was about him wanting to live the normal life with his family ? Think hed had enough of touring and just wanted to be a husband and father
Freddie supposedly did volunteer to shave his mustache for the part in drag, but the rest of the band told him to keep it, because it'd be funnier that way.
Not only is the the whole band talented but all four are incredibly intelligent having completed college degrees: Freddie in graphic art, Roger in biology, John in electronics and Brian has a PhD in astrophysics.
@@SeanOHanlon May started his graduate work in 1971, so you could say he probably holds the record for the longest period going ABD (All But Dissertation).
In reference to Freddie's having a degree in graphic design, he's the one who designed the logo for Queen, which was based largely on Freddie's being of the Zoastrian faith

Written by bassist John Deacon as a commentary on the women’s liberation movement at the time (old lady reading the newspaper on the couch). It was Roger Taylor’s girlfriend at the time who suggested they all dress up (blond teenager). It was supposed to be spoof of a long time British soap opera called Coronation Street. MTV banned the video!! Ridiculous. Lastly Brian May is the housewife in rollers. Today the song is used to break free from whatever may be holding you back.
Freddie spoke out about this once it was released... he said people assume he's the one who wanted everybody to dress up as ladies. Actually, Freddie was the one who DIDN'T want to do it! Also all 4 of them are there
wonderful memory of seeing them at Knebworth at what would turn out to be Freddies last show - 120,000 people sang this word for word perfect - getting goosebumps now almost 40 years later thinking about it. Freddie? what a showman he was
@4:00 They were all dressed up. The woman reading the newspaper is John Deacon, the woman going to the fridge is Brian May. Also, it wasn't Freddie's idea. I can't remember who of the other three had the idea to do drag, but I remember it wasn't Freddie.
The drag suggestion came from Dominique - Roger's girlfriend at the time, and the boys dressed as a parody of Coronation Street characters... Unfortunately, since the Americans didn't know the series, they didn't get the joke... I'm still staggered that Freddie managed to persuade the dancers of The Royal Ballet to take part...
Please, please watch their live aid 1985 performance. 20 mins that changed my life. Freddie was suffering a throat infection and told by doctors not to perform. He did anyway and blessed us all with the memory. Please note, no mobile phones at that time, so everyone was into the music. Brilliant
The good news, Stacey, is that you have so much more greatness by Queen ahead of you. The best piece of advice I can give you is to react to as many of their songs, especially the deep cuts, as you can. With what you said about Queen and their music, trust me, you have absolutely no idea yet about how versatile they were as songwriters and performers. There has never been a band like Queen!!
Most bands in the 70's had their own sound but played a variety a genres and styles. As a teenager and young musician I loved it! And Queen was one of my absolute favorites because of this!
Love to watch you enjoy new music. Queen is awesome and brings joy! Freddie recorded an entire album with an opera singer named Monsterrat Cabelle. A single is called Barcelona and you will not be sorry to give it a listen. Another thing is after Freddie's passing, the band and others organized a tribute concert with many musical guests to honor him. It is an all star show and is a fun concert. On your journey, I think you will enjoy Journey, and Tool! Tool's lead singer has three bands and they take you on a ride musically. Three different bands, but great music all. So many wonderful bands ahead of you and artists to explore. I also think you will love Metallica, who did an entire album with a Symphony. No Leaf Clover is a song they wrote for the concert. Make sure it is the original I think. I think Led Zeppelin will surprise you too!! A song called Thank You. Rock on!
Hello Stacey, my recommendations for future Queen reactions: Somebody to love; Who wants to live forever, Innuendo. Another suggestion is to choose videos from live concerts rather than official videos, as Freddie has been one of the greatest live performers ever.
This video actually cost Queen America which they never got back in Freddy’s lifetime. Freddy was also a trail blazer. Freddy actually never denied being gay. But this was the 80’s . Ignorance of the new AIDS epidemic had just hit America.
Good reaction! I've been noticing something: you and some other young people have been only reacting to live versions of songs of many artists, and it's ok, because I agree with you, many songs sound way better live, but you got to understand that many bands and artists produced many interesting and some great official music videos in the 80's / 90's, just like this one. Artists as Queen, Michael Jackson, Elton John... That's why I recommend reacting to these Queen's official music videos: "Innuendo"; "A kind of magic"; "One vision"; "Show must go on" (spoiler alert: this song was the one composed to say goodbye to Freddie - rumors by that time said he was very ill and super thin, and he was not appearing in public; that's why you won't see Queen playing and Freddie singing this song - instead, a bunch of images of Queen, something like a memory album).
You have such a long exciting Queen tour ahead of you. There are so many I’d love to see your wonderful reactions to. I’ll come back to you with some links another time. I love how you seem to find the words which sum up how I feel regarding Queen and how you love Freddie’s voice. It all sums it up perfectly for me. Thank you Stacey.
This video didn't land well in the United States, because MTV and others rushed to judgement and banned it. Oh my goodness the pearl rubbers strike again! This is awesome song and we love it. I'm still going to push for "White Queen " Odeon Hammersmith Live 1975. This is the greatest hidden gems of the Queen catalog. Good Day and great job as always. 🫶👑🌈💙
Lisa Stansfield performed this song in the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, and even got dressed up as in the video clip. According to one clip I saw she had the idea to do so not long after being asked by the remaining members of queen to perform, then some how got in touch with Roger Taylor, and told him the idea, because she had misgivings thinking it might be out of line, who gave her the go ahead..
You should try “Who Wants to Live Forever?”. It is a ballad and classical piece about being afraid to live forever as all your loves will die. It was one of the main songs from their soundtrack to the cult classic movie Highlander (a movie you should watch and/or react to). Queen watched a rough version of the movie, were moved by it and wrote the song in the taxi on the way home.
Thank you for your reaction to the song. Queen is the band of my youth and will never fade away. And one compliment, you are such a beautiful woman. Greetings to you from Croatia.
Another wonderful reaction. Did you notice that he shaved his mustache for the dream sequence with the dancers but keeps it for the vacuuming sequence in drag?😂. So funny. More Queen please.
I enjoy your Queen reactions very much! Please continue reacting to this amazing band. This song was written by the bassist, John Deacon about women's liberation. He didn't want a guitar solo in it so Fred Mandel, who had played keyboards on the Hot Space album and tour, created a synthesizer solo for it. Brian plays the solo on his guitar live. All four band members are songwriters so you won't find a Queen album that has all songs sounding similarly. Brian is the first person you see dressed in the nightgown with rollers in his naturally curly hair. I think his outfit is totally under-rated. Love the slippers! Rogers common-law wife Dominique suggested they dress like characters from Coronation Street. Freddie was friends with the members of the Royal ballet so he danced with them in the middle portion and the last part was depicting the striking miners at the time in 1984. It was enjoyed everywhere but the U.S. where MTV didn't get the joke and banned it.
“The four women” in the single-family home in the suburb of an English city are actually the 4 members of the band. At the time, this video clip was banned by MTV.
That steaming clock at the start of the video is a 'teasmade' - an alarm clock and automatic tea maker combined. You get woken up with a nice freshly-made hot cuppa. I kid you not. Genius.
Highly recommend These are the days of our lives from Innuendo, written after Freddie found he had aids and was the last album they recorded before he died, very emotional song and a challenge for you not to cry when listening.

This whole album is worth listening to in its entirety. And check out the rest of the clips for the tracks on this album: "Radio Ga Ga", "It's a Hard Life", "Hammer to Fall". *** Step by step we are getting closer to my favorite Queen albums of 1986, 1989, 1991. You must watch their "Live Aid" full show and witness Freddie the Showman's control over the crowd. You will not regret it...there was no one that could follow them after that performance. Then look for the "Crowd that sings Bohemian Rhapsody"
This was banned in USA because of the cross dressing. In the UK and Europe we have traditions in stage and theatre going back hundreds of years with cross dressing ( think Shakespeare plays and pantomime) so in the UK it's seen as one of Queens best and memorable videos. It killed them in the USA from 1984 through until 1991 when Wayne's world came out.
Your reactions are so genuine. I love looking at your facial expressions Stacey!!! Keep doing what you’re doing. I absolutely love Queen (R.I.P. Freddie) 😢too. You are definitely the 👸 Queen of reaction though.
this is my first musical memory 🥰 In the 90's, I was about 4 or 5 years old,, sitting in the car waiting for my dad getting gas - and he had a mix tape that I was absolutely forbidden to touch. Of course I somehow played it, and the first songthat weas on it was this one, I Want To Break Free, followed by some David Bowie. Easy to say, I've loved Queen ever since (closely followed by David Bowie) - and especially this song
There's something of a tradition of cross-dressing in British TV. There was the show that inspired this video idea, and it's also quite similar to the feel from some Monty Python skits. Still you've just got to love the willingness to go out and express themselves, and that their art took precedence over other concerns.
Wow ! Someone sent me one of your reactions to Queen and I must say that your comments demonstrate very good musical knowledge with a very relevant, technical and reasoned analysis. Well done ! A reactor does just as well with the same skills and I really like what he does. I would be curious to hear your reactions to a singer whose career development I follow because in this video, you often highlighted the vocal qualities of Freddy Mercury and these are the same qualities that I noticed from the beginning at this singer. I'm thinking of Courtney Hadwin and I don't know if you know her. I think she'll bring a breath of renewal on the rock planet. Rock ? Not just rock, because her musical range is enormous Have a good day ! 🤟
Queen fans are more upset by Freddie's passing than he was. He had a whale of a time, knew his talent had been recorded for the ages, and so was ready to leave his mortal coil.
In England this actually wasn’t too shocking (even back then). There’s a long history of Christmas ‘Pantomime’ theatre productions where the male lead wears women’s clothes and the woman dresses as a man. So that part at least was widely accepted as a joke (and they’re also pretending to be in the soap opera ’Coronation Street’).
I have got another interesting story that middle part where Freddie is dancing with bunch of people. These are ballet dancers with whom Fred was perfoming in some ballet show in 70's.
My favourite Queen song. But I note I would like to make Queen is all 4 band members...each member wrote songs for the band and all had written N° 1 singles for the band. Freddie wasn't really popular without the band and the band wasn't anything without Freddie....they were the best...together!
The 1970th and begining of 1980th music is the best, so much creativity and quality. It was bands like Queen and Abba taking us with storm (atleast here in Europe) and still they are the goats! ❤
As people have said, the start was taken from coronation street, the longest running soap in the UK, this was take from the 70's era, from the dress and the hair styles, but mainly the iconic tea's maid, for the younger generation, it was an alarm clock that was next to the bed, that also made tea when the alarm went off, its the clip when the clock blows up,
This song will always remind me of my mum a stay at home mum in the 70's into 80's (she had it dam hard growing up) boomer generation (UK). With dad working 5-6 days a week a truck driver all over the UK all week. Made sure i was ready for the s*** to hit the fan to look after myself on my own as a son some thing i will always be thankful for (be fully self sufficient-lifestyle). When it come to music i'm still Gen-X she was up there to the end.
Hi from Spain, Stacey! There's no guitar solo in this song, what you hear is a synthesizer. When they played the song in concert Brian plays the solo with his guitar (the red special)
You also have to remember this was back before the internet was global and the world was watching MTV and other music TV shows which created some awesome content and creativity such as this performance.
Freddie once said he’ll bring ballet to the masses and there it is.!!!! Ps the guitar part you said was very interesting wasn’t guitar it was a synthesiser.
Just wait until you start on the lesser known tracks, the variety is incredible. Folk, soul, jazz, funk, ballads, rock, metal, ragtime, calypso and more. All with that unmistakable Queen sound.
For Freddie's costume in the ballet sequence, compare the drawing of the Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky as a faun in the ballet 'L'apres midi d'une faune' The illustration by George Barbier.
The GOAT. This is what being unique meant back in the day. Freddy had the talent and the style to do it, and that was it. Today peeps want cred just for breathing.
It was actually synthesizer not guitar but many listeners at first listening thought it was a guitar with some effect put on it. Next maybe It's A Hard Life from the same era .
Hi! The bassist, John Deacon, wrote the song. He didn't want a guitar solo, so he asked their touring keyboardist, Fred Mandel, to come up with a synth solo...there you have it. Axel Itto Brookltn, Ny
It will be nice to hear some early Queen sometime, when they really ROCKED Out back in the mid to late 70s. Try Liar and see why they were compared to Led Zeppelin early on. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
As somebody has already said the guitar solo is not a guitar at all. It's a synth. The first couple of times I heard it it fooled me too because the style and phrasing is exactly the kind of thing Brian would play.
Freddy was extremely charismatic and charming. You need to react to Queens Live Aid performance. Another suggestion would be Boz Skaggs. The lead singers voice is insane. Their most popular songs are “jojo” and “lowdown”
Queen was it's own genre. I'll never forgive mtv and vh1 for their decision to ban them because of this video, we in the United States were robbed of so much of their great music due to some corporate stuffed shirts. Id love to see your reaction to One Vision live at Wembley 86 👑
You need to check out "who wants to live forever" by queen. It's one of my all time favourites, then "barcelona" actually probably all of queen's back catalogue.
This song was used by many alternate 12:28 sexual or lifestyle genres. As Some one who grew up in gender neutral family, this validation helped me face the world. Am now 67 and proud mum to daughter who plays and sings Queen to her kids.
💢💢💢 love it all .. your face Stacey ------ when you realized it was Freddie was hilarious!! The other band members were there also.. John , the bass player was the old lady .. Brian. the guitarist , had curlers in his hair.. and the drummer , Roger, had the blonde wig on. I love this song . I love the video... they were just being naughty even if people didn't like it. There are so many more great songs for you to discover. I suggest.... "Tie Your Mother Down" .... and ........ "Love Of My Life"

this is my first musical memory 🥰 In the 90's, I was about 4 or 5 years old,, sitting in the car waiting for my dad getting gas - and he had a mix tape that I was absolutely forbidden to touch.
Yep! There's nothing wrong with popping a dress on when the occasion calls for it.
Yep. As Michael Palin said in one of their skits, "It's fun, and only 'slightly' illegal."
You do know that the clip of "I want to break free" was a parody of the British soap opera "Coronation Street", right?
Rock ?
Not just rock, because her musical range is enormous
Have a good day ! 🤟
Queen fans are more upset by Freddie's passing than he was. He had a whale of a time, knew his talent had been recorded for the ages, and so was ready to leave his mortal coil.
Just seen Freddie sing love of my life at Reo . You MUST react to this performance. Out of this world.
hello stacey 😃Freddie made Stacey blush 🤣🤣
The song was written by bassist John Deacon about people who feel trapped in abusive relationships.
John Deacon doesn't get the respect/recognition that he deserves. Queens secret weapon.
02:22 the band convinced him to do it
In England this actually wasn’t too shocking (even back then). There’s a long history of Christmas ‘Pantomime’ theatre productions where the male lead wears women’s clothes and the woman dresses as a man. So that part at least was widely accepted as a joke (and they’re also pretending to be in the soap opera ’Coronation Street’).
I'm glad that in Canada we also got the joke :)
And that makes the country soo unique, ahead of everyone else in modernity.
Oldie but top band, Stevie Ray Vaughan so excited live at the el mocambo 🎉have a great day
I have got another interesting story that middle part where Freddie is dancing with bunch of people.
I love people's reactions to this video because they haven't the slightest idea of what's coming! It's awesome to watch!
The 1970th and begining of 1980th music is the best, so much creativity and quality. It was bands like Queen and Abba taking us with storm (atleast here in Europe) and still they are the goats! ❤
theyou were all so talented. .....
Thank you so much for your channel Queen is the beat keep reacting to Queen God Bless and thank you
Deaky was reading the paper on the sofa, Brian was the one in rollers and a robe digging in the fridge. And yes Rog was the school girl. Lol
Great reaction to a great song. As a mucisian myself, I think you make a good analysis, even without your musical background. 👍🎶
I love this song and video. I first heard the song on the radio in the 1980s
Freddie once said he’ll bring ballet to the masses and there it is.!!!!
Ps the guitar part you said was very interesting wasn’t guitar it was a synthesiser.
queen is one of the 5-10 biggest bands in the history of rock music.
Freddie shaved his mustache for the middle part..and by the way, it's not guitar in the middle part, it's synthetizers 😉
Their first album is guitar heaven!
The first time Queen used a synthesiser in any track!
@michaelfoster5577 play the game was the first track to feature a synthesiser
@@davethomas7477 well - never knew that!
No the whole game and flash albums for over 4 years earlier have synths.
Love Queen so much one of my favourite bands.
Pearl Jam taking no1 spot as best band for me.
Would be great to see you react to them.
Freddie was very open about his sexuality and never hid it. Freddie was out in the 70s.
Hi! The bassist, John Deacon, wrote the song. He didn't want a guitar solo, so he asked their touring keyboardist, Fred Mandel, to come up with a synth solo...there you have it.

Check out '' Radio Ga Ga '' from live aid. This will show you how Freddie has control of the audience it's amazing.
Stacey I Want To Break Free was writen by bassist John Deacon.
It will be nice to hear some early Queen sometime, when they really ROCKED Out back in the mid to late 70s. Try Liar and see why they were compared to Led Zeppelin early on. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
John Deacon who wrote this song said that he didn’t want a guitar solo on this track so a synthesizer was used instead.
Glad you liked it. All four band members were dressed as women in the video. 😊👍🏾
As somebody has already said the guitar solo is not a guitar at all. It's a synth. The first couple of times I heard it it fooled me too because the style and phrasing is exactly the kind of thing Brian would play.
That's so very true indeed
Freddy was extremely charismatic and charming. You need to react to Queens Live Aid performance.
Another suggestion would be Boz Skaggs. The lead singers voice is insane. Their most popular songs are “jojo” and “lowdown”
Your reaction to this was just brilliant 😂
Queen was it's own genre. I'll never forgive mtv and vh1 for their decision to ban them because of this video, we in the United States were robbed of so much of their great music due to some corporate stuffed shirts. Id love to see your reaction to One Vision live at Wembley 86 👑
You must watch Freddie doing The great pretender. A wonderful look back at himself
Such a great Queen song! For next level Queen (or Freddie) check out Who Wants To Live Forever. One of my favorite Queen songs ever
You need to check out "who wants to live forever" by queen. It's one of my all time favourites, then "barcelona" actually probably all of queen's back catalogue.
I've fallen in for tge first time, and this time I know it's for real...
So clever..
Keep on going with Queen! Another absolute banger of a beat is 'Breakthru' recorded open air on a train!
Would love for you to hear A Kind of Magic and Who Wants to Live Forever which was used for the Highlander Movie.
"Tie Your Mother Down"
.... and ........ "Love Of My Life"
Also got them banded from MTV
Nice reaction, I will not make any suggestions as I know the Live Aid concert has been suggested hundreds of times.
