Until the Queen Mother married into the RF, they had almost total privacy. A small paragraph in the paper would be it re Court events or opening a hospital wing etc. The Queen Mother then decided to let the BBC film a documentary about their private family life when Queen Elizabeth was around 10 or 11 years old. And the press & media fascination with the Royals, in particular, Elizabeth & her sister Margaret began. The Queen Mother kicked it all off so to speak.

I think that the Queen realized how badly she mishandled Diana in training her in what was expected of a working royal. She was I believe not going to make the same mistake and so she spent a lot of time with Kate showing her the ropes. So yes Kate and her became very close. The Queen also made a lot of time for the kids and so they also became close as all kids would with a indulgent granny. The only one who could break the news to the kids was Kate, their mum, as it would be a traumatic moment for them.
It may have escaped your notice but Diana was the daughter of an earl, she was the granddaughter of the Queen Mothers lady in waiting and was raised within the circle of the rituals, so knew exactly what was expected of her in all circumstances.. this is why she was always fiercely loyal to the establishment.
