What's really going on with Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes in F1 2025

- Could Sebastian Vettel really make a shock F1 comeback next year with Mercedes?
That was one of the big talking points on media day at the Japanese Grand Prix - and comes after Vettel teased the prospect of making a return from retirement as a replacement for Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton, a move heartily endorsed by Hamilton himself.
It's also the latest twist in a 2025 F1 driver market silly season that keeps spitting out narratives before it's properly got going. But just what is going on here?

'So is Sebastian Vettel going to mercedes?'
'No'
'OK then'
I saw an interview with him on Sky News (I assuming he's doing the rounds, but 🤷♀), he was asked, he answered honestly, and added the "only conversation" to answer the implied question. How much did he consciously play with the answer, to ensure there was plenty of news coverage for him while launching his drink??? 🤷♀
Exactly. It's like a video that's titled: "Ebola, is UK civilisation at risk?"
No.
@@chrisc475 No. It's not.
To use your topic, this would be "Why has Ebola been in the news recently?"
Having a more serious topic to cover, changes how headlines ought to be written from more gossipy things like this, and your example take things way above what they have because of the emphasis.
@@ChrispyNut Mate, I was joking!
@@chrisc475 Well, I didn't pick up on it. Happens. 🤷♀
So let's spend 9 minutes talking about what definitely will not happen, by continuedly repeating what will definitely not happen. God I’m too old for this 🤦🏼♂️
The Race in a nutshell.
The description of instantly is repeating the same thing again and again and expecting a different outcome
Honestly I unsubbed. Pissed me off the more they talked.
typical for the race.. unsubbed a while ago
@@Mr2it3881 Im honestly right there with you Im about to unsub
Front running team? Generous wording these days
You've spent too long listening to Hamiltons winging, they're still 2nd/3rd/4th, definitely a front running team
@@ProfessorShroom Im not sure you can say they are better then Ferrari. Maybe if they get their shit together, they are on Mclarens level. But right now they are fighting with Aston Marin. So they are upper Midfield. Not sure what you are on about.
@@janakumer Current performance level, it's track and weather dependant between Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and possibly Aston. However Mercedes seem soo at sea with their understanding of these regs and the cars they're producing, they really could be 5th by the end of the season, partly cos Lewis is performing too far behind George.
@@ProfessorShroom They only finished 2nd last season because of Sainz's penalty at Las Vegas, not because they were good. McLaren were much better in the 2nd half of the season, and AM were much better in the first half.
@@ProfessorShroom nobody mentioned Hamilton but like your typical fake f1 you did its 🤡 like you that are obsessed can't handle the fact he's still the greatest of the modern era now go cry about that
I hate the Race's obsession with hitting that 9 - 11 minute mark, no matter the content.
I don’t see Sainz or Alonso settling for a 1 or 2 year deal with Merc knowing that Antonelli is Mercs goal for 2026
If red bull don't take Sainz or alonso where else could they go?
Alonso could go for a two year deal, since I can't see him say in F1 further
Sainz might. I doubt Alonso would
The thing is, let's say Alonso agrees to go there on a 2 year deal. That takes us into the new regulations in 2026. Mercedes gets it right and Alonso storms to the title, are Mercedes going to dump him then?
Why would Sainz want a drive in a total turd of a car ?
You talking about Vettel is also drawing attention to his energy drink. He's a genius. Free marketing. RUclips is one of the best marketing tools right now, but paying for sponsor spots is expensive... Call Toto, talk to a few reporters and dozens of youtube channels talk about you for free.
Exactly…it’s just PR
Did Hamilton really talk about being a team player lol
Remember "Love conquers all" Lewis Hamilton Germany 2018.
The race are deluded
He absolutely is!
When it’s his team.
And everyone caters around him.
Without questioning him in the slightest.
And when cutting any sort of competition short asap!
😂
Hamilton 'team player' is code word of 'you no.2, me no.1 a la Bottas
@@theempires5 but you can blame him?
rosberg was a competition he doesn't like bottas has to settle since he was mentioned for the seat.
Merc was Hamilton's team like Ferrari was Schumacher's and Redbull is Verstappen's.
Still a great talent.
I don't think he'll enter F1. One of the reasons he brought up for leaving was that he wanted to spend more time with his family. Maybe going back and racing in Le Mans for a once-a-year race appearance is one thing, but racing in 24 weeks in a year is going to be a no-go for him knowing that family reason.
Tom Brady retired for the same reason and caame back.
@@stanleystan7336 Every athlete who has experienced the highest of highs in a sport will want to experience those feelings again. It's like a drug for high performance athletes and the itch for the sport never goes away even after years of retirement.
He retired because Aston Martin was a backmarker
Hamilton calling other drivers selfish is wild - he’s as ruthless as any driver when he feels threatened which can be a good thing
It isn’t wild at all. Alonso already had the reputation of being overly selfish in his first stint. Hence overdramatized anything he slightly dislikes about his team to the media. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch to today’s Alonso, but that certainly fits his style and only his style.
Every multiple world champion in F1 is domineering and selfish. It's a required trait to be consistently the best in the sport. Nice guys literally finish last, and if they finish first, they won't do it often (Button, Rosberg)
@@sandalphoncpu Seb had a reputation as a complete asshole in his younger days which has been retconned somehow
Hamilton is only good in the best car with a weak teammate. Otherwise he lose, always. A complete knob-head!

This is why we need 2 more teams / 4 more seats... Too many good drivers out there.
4 more seats doesn't fix that, not 6 more seats either. Will still be too many good drivers out there.
@@FabledGentleman A 20% increase would not be a bad start.
@@TommyNimbinProblem is that you can only add 3 more teams and there are no more garage space on any track. That's it.
problem of f1 today is not that there isn't enough teams, there is just no way to satisfy everyone with getting their overlooked driver into the mix. because there simply isn't possible.
What f1 is doing wrong right now though is to keep drivers around that shouldn't be there. F1 used to be brutal, and so it should be, this is the ultimate racing league, and if you are not up for the task, you are out, contract or no contract. Right now it seems like several teams are into charity.
F1 has always been a brutal sport, there is no patting on the back. You either perform or you can go drive a Porsche somewhere.
Just imagine, that in it's 70 year history, this year was the first time ever, where no team switched or fire any drivers.... 70 years...
F1 has a problem. And not enough teams is not the biggest one.
We don’t need 36 year olds re entering in F1 ….
@@FabledGentleman It may not be the biggest problem but it helps on most of those fronts. 4 more seats would mean that there would be more room for Nepobabies like Stroll and marketing gimmicks like Danny to exist. But more importantly - it would potentially allow some development time. Not everybody is going to be a prodigy like Max. Some drivers might need a year or 2 in the car before their talent can be realized. Its not that I am against cutthroat - but just as a fan, continuity is nice - and having more seats for good drivers to stick around - and young drivers to develop would be a value add to the sport.
Sooooo, this is just a 9 minute ad for an energy drink then? Intentional or not.
Everyone is a Zeb fan. LULE
Slow news day to spend 9 minutes for something that can answered with "no"
"Hes 37" he says whilst discussing the 40 year old moving backwards on the grid and heading to Ferrari and whether a 42 year old in a stalled nepo team was suited to be a replacement...
Alonso & Hamilton are quick. Vettel just about beat Stroll when he left. There's a difference.
For next year, I'm sure he's moving forwards on the grid. Mercedes are lost this rule cycle, at least Ferrari seems to have a grasp on their aero and are becoming ... less ... All Italian.
@@98MTBiker lol ! lewis is not even making q3 these days !!
Ok, first 3 races of this season maybe not. Second half of 2023 he was convincingly faster than Russell. And he doesn't crash on the last lap.@@mvh996
@@98MTBiker What an odd comparison with completely different cars and years 🤭
Seb becoming slow in the final years is a common misconception (maybe 2020 is an exception). It's more like he became more inconsistent. He was still quick half of the races and was nowhere in the other half, his pace kept alternating, that's why on average Stroll was closer. Also Seb still had his racecraft intact (overtakes, defending etc).
We should also consider that Seb consistently had worse strategy and luck than Stroll, and also Stroll performed worse than usual against Alonso. Remember Stroll was a lot closer to Alonso at the beginning and at the end of last year. This year will either prove or disprove what I said about Stroll
The only time that Vettel was legitimately inconsistent was after he announced his retirement in Hungary and started falling off in qualifying.
Till then he was dominating Stroll.
I'm all for Vettel driving a Merc....!
I’ve heard Hakkinen is on Mercedes radar after deciding he’s keen to return from his sabbatical
I’ve always thought hulkennburg would make a low cost low risk option for a year or two
🤨Talking about butchering a name: It's Huelkenberg
Hülkenberg*
"a front running team like mercedes" lol
I LOLd at that
The Race somehow managed to turn Vettel talking to Wolff about the weather to an Alonso hit piece after they made a trial by media vid about him because Russel made a boo-boo.
Bravo for stringing together 9 minutes of pointless blather. You’ve dropped an impeccable deuce right here 👌 can smell it from New York. well done
How about seeing Vettel standing on top step of podium at LeMans in a German Manufacturers car? A Porsche
Crazy with so many young drivers and Sainz on market
This channel is the gold standard for F1 journalism. Long may it continue.
what a load of waffle
Given he will almost certainly drive Le Mans with Porsche, it’ll be more likely he will return to Audi and help them develop the car.
Or go towards WEC where the calendar isn’t as stuffed as F1
No... Don't give me hope
It's cheaper than the hopium at the local store.
Hope? All they said was its not happening.
Would be funny if Antonelli goes to Mercedes next year and when Hamilton retires, replaces him in Ferrari again
Antonelli needs more time in F2
@@KuchingKingVideoGamer He should have been in F3 this year and in F2 in 2025. He is not ready.
Vettel is better off in WEC in a Porsche. Unless he goes to a team with a top 2 car in F1 it’s not really worth it IMO.
Slow news day, huh...
This could've been a community post...
I hear there's a possibility of a Prost return. Make a video about THAT.
What is with all the vettel hate????
It's thanks to Stroll performing worse than usual last year. This year will either prove or disprove my opinion
British media, what did you expect.
@@famingo4363 that's actually a good point.
Talking about age when looking at Alonso as a possibility is crazy work
Vettel in WEC would be way more amazing than F1. He had a heartfelt farewell in 2022. He's a person who can appreciate those moments. WEC is the next frontier for him.
5:15 "This is a great story for F1" -- The only problem is that it isn't a story
Edd Straw giving a 37 year old world champion F1 driver grief over his age is laughable. keep off the donuts, Edd.
2:00 Hope he's also referring to Ocon
Bro just drove a WEC Porsche Hypercar...he aint comin back
Lol F1 drivers being media milkers is no suprise
Ironically, the very end of the video about Antonelli is why I think Seb might be the perfect choice. Who else might agree to a 1 year contract to keep the seat warm for a rookie? Not anyone already in F1, that's for sure. With Seb, you get a quality driver that knows the ins and outs and someone who can mentor Antonelli to make the step up. Seb is the perfect guy right now for when you need a selfless, team player.
If Antonelli is Mercedes‘ driver for the future but they decide he needs another year of F2, I think Vettel is the vastly more realistic stopgap for one year than Alonso or Sainz.
I can’t see these two agreeing to being a one year stopgap before being replaced by Antonelli, however I can see Vettel agreeing to such a deal to show everyone he’s still got it and maybe get a seat somewhere else.
Its always raining in Suzuka lol
WEC & consultant at Williams from 2026 projecting
Its just got to the stage where almost every other driver is being considered for the Audi positions.
I thought Hamilton Alonso and Vettel were all part of an investment group looking at buying Williams?
Man he’s really trying do follow on schumaker’s steps😂
Vettel is definitely not coming back but BBC Sports had a breaking alert earlier today about this. If he comes back then you lot will make a clown out of yourselves with this video.
Hamilton insinuating that Alonso is too negative is pretty ironic given his own comments about the team the past couple years
Seb is the guy who gave feedback to AM before they shot up the grid. Im sure Toto sees this
Some hopes are not to be toyed with.
As much as I'd love to see Vettel come back, I don't think we'll see it.
He was referring to Russel
There's so little going on on-track that we're scraping the bottom of the barrel like this. Damn...
Theres a logjam of young drivers hungry to reach F1, and all F1 keeps doing is digging up former drivers to come back? Hulk, KMag, Alonso a while back, Danny Ric ... now Seb?
Old reliable hand
Drivers are getting too young this is good.
because these young drivers just arent good. face it. people love to sugarcoat and hype up the new guy but the new guy mostly consists of a mick schumacher, a logan sargeant, and a nyck devries. why would teams want to hire a new young driver when they can go for an alternative, older, more experienced and faster driver like alonso? why would a team like haas want to risk their budget with a new driver who might shunt a few times, destroy their budget, and be hilariously off the pace anyways like logan?
Anyone hinting for a Mario Andretti, Alain Prost or Alan Jones comeback? They still breathing
@@sloppynyuszi Mika Hakkinen is finally ready to leave his sabbatical year 🙏
He's not daft, loads of people have heard about his energy drink now
Nope. He's drifting towards WEC.
Yet we all said Hamilton will never go to Ferrari........Or Oscar snubbing Alpine for Mclaren
I’m surprised The Race didn’t somehow find an excuse to make this another article or video slamming Alonso.
I've had an imaginative bet on Sainz to retire 1st at a generous 20/1.
I can't believe the Italians will keep allowing him to beat Charlie boy.
Edd sure know how to yap
Not sure the Vettel we saw at Aston Martin would be much use to Mercedes
im amazed that a lot is being spoken about Kimi (although I see his potential and skill), when they have another young driver in the form of Frederik Vesti, nobody has spoken about him getting the chance for either Mercedes, or as you suggested with Antonelli, to put him into the Williams seat. I then ask - does he have no chance for any seat even though he is the reserve and testing driver for Mercedes at the moment? He has atleast delivered results in F2, which for the moment still is an unknown about Kimi
Sad Mick isn’t even in the conversation
To see him help Penske Porsche make an F1 entry, kind of like how Schumacher helped Mercedes would be pretty awesome!
Buzzfeed of F1 journalism.
In order I think:-
Sainz
Alonso
Albon
Ocon
Then Antonelli for a Williams for a couple of years
If there is a rumor in F1 paddok. Then it will be a true.
I’m waiting for Rosberg to announce his return tbh
This silly season of F1 just got a whole new level sillier 😂
How old is Josh Suttill?
We miss Seb
Vettle has a billion dollar brain, it was development direction in 22 what made the aston in to a front runner at the start of 23
Webber did Porsche WEC, why not Vettel?
This year is so interesting. Most conversations are about what will happen in 2025. 😂
how's Vet's beez doing beside the track?
Non existent by the looks of it then
Great job preserving the beez
Older people may be savvy but the reflexes go with age and I think driving in F1 is a younger man's game. It would be silly to come back for a year as it would take that long to get up to the speed of F1. I would like to see him in WEC racing.
What about the smooth operator
No top team would want Vettel. He was great in his early career and dropped him form long before he retired.
More like publicity for his drink and his other activities
"front running team like mercedes"
can we seriously keep on calling them that with a straight face?
they havent been running at the front in over 2 years
its possible, likely even, that the finish 4th, behind a customer team this year.
This is entirely a combination of clever drinks marketing by Seb, combined with rabid idiocy by the F1 media pen.
Good PR for his energy drink. That is all
I just think it’s a little a disrespectful to say that Vettel isn’t a good candidate anymore…
Calling mercedes a “front running team” is laughable at this point
That's utter nonsense. It would be hypocritical of Wolfe too with his backing of Mick Schumacher. What happen to him? Why won't he give him the chance if he built him up so much? eh? Alonso to Red Bull in 2025 instead. Why would Alonso want to switch to a slower team? Mercedes is a mess. They have no clue with their chassis design. They may be winless for 2024. This year will be RB, Ferrari, and McLaren for the podiums.
Vettel is a really smart guy and I think he's going to realize that if he wants to push all his initiatives outside of F1 the best method is to be on the grid with all the cameras pointed at him while he still can.
It’s a huge commitment to be on the road for forty some weeks in a year. I highly doubt Seb would even consider that.
Slow news day? 🤦♂️
I would love to see him again in f1
Talk about scraping the barrel... 😔
May instead of F1 it's all about the drinks brand that may have involved investments from toto😂
I would rather see Vettel race with Porsche in WEC.
Look to the future not to the past
No talk at all of Albon to Mercedes? :(
Such a shame that Vettel isn’t a serious contender as you say when alonso is 😔
So basically this video was a plug for Purple?! ;)
F1 season starts up. Same with every rumor possible
I really can’t image Antonelli getting the seat. I think it definitely would be rushed from Mercedes.
If he comes back to racing I think WEC is more likely. Far less races and a Le mans win more likely.
I'm for term limits in F1, say ten years? So many good young drivers now a days.
How to prop your stuff. He is just a smart promoter of his investments
What's going on is people blowing something up out of proportion. It's on brand with what we're seeing with Mercedes these days.
