I don't know, this would be a huge gamble from Merc's side. While he would be able to help them with car development, he would not help much performance wise. He had noticeably dropped performance wise in his last few years and I doubt that he would regain his form.
And also - I wouldn't want him to return as a driver. He has already had his time under the sun, someone else should get a chance.

He gets to fulfill his hunger for racing, and because races are so apart from each other he could spend all that time with his family or any other project he has.

The thing about not having the "Hunger". I feel it comes down to, our bodies are able to react quicker than "we" are able to make ourselves react, if that makes sense.. "Brain, put foot down, turn wheel" etc. Like you almost unconsciously react to things and muscle memory takes over. This is something all top athletes have, it's entering a flow state. This is massively hindered by anxiety and such. If you don't have the drive anymore to be in F1 you most definitely won't be able to enter a flow state and race your ass off.

Speaking of missing the sound of the V10s, I really dislike that Formula E-esque electronic "whirrrrr" the new F2 cars have. It's even more noticeable IRL. I'm really, really hoping the 2026 F1 cars don't have a similar sound but I'm not particularly confident they won't. Jack Doohan was supposed to drive a 2000 era V10 at Melbourne but it was cancelled at the last minute for technical issues. I was so bummed. Still got to see a bunch of 1960s F1 and Le Mans cars do a few runs, which was amazing.
Sound is so important to going to see an F1 race. I remember hearing those engines echo around the city in Melbourne up til 2013, I lived 20 miles away and could clearly hear them. It was great to see the Porsche 911's race in Melbourne as support races, with brutally loud engines. My ears are still ringing. It's visceral and exciting and you feel the sound ripple through your whole body. The current F1 cars were louder than I expected, but nowhere near loud enough!

I was of the same opinion to you on the kimmi antonelli thing until I heard Will Buxtons opinion on it on the red flags podcast yesterday.
Basically since 2025 is a throwaway anyways it’s the lowest risk time to bring a rookie in and get familiar with the team. That way in 2026 they don’t have to worry about learning a new team and a new car regulation at the same time.
Also Toto seems to be really upset about the max thing all that time ago so he might be willing to risk hiring a rookie this time.

    • @JimTheFly

This is a way of looking at this that I hadn't thought of. I would have considered getting used to the team and the new car and everything in 2025, only to have all sorts of regulations change the next year, would be even more confusing to a new driver. But I think I may be giving far too much weight to the regulation changes affecting the mentality of a driver. It's definitely something to consider.

@@Redlingstein there is a big reason I say *if*.
The season is still young (as is the driver) and things can change, but right now if Kimi isn’t in a shot to win Formula 2 then he stays there for at least one more season, maybe two, while someone else takes the Mercedes seat.
My point is more if somehow he suddenly takes the F2 championship by storm, Toto probably won’t want to risk not having him in a seat for 2025, not a reflection of how he is currently in his skillet or standings.

He seems so happy now. And honestly bringing more joy driving retro cars than a whole field of modern F1 cars for me. Because of the noise.

People with no wheel knowledge say he's terrible at it, whereas it's known he's one of the best at it, just not necessarily communicating in engineer speak perse like some other drivers
He can tell you how to make the car fast, what to change to improve balance, etc etc, but he probably isn't going to sit down with the engineers and say hey I think next year we might want to design the front suspension to have x amount more anti-dive bla bla like Seb or Alonso might, but if he went yeah we need to work on front suspension then his engineers can translate his feeling and explanation into proper development then the car is gonna be rapid
I think a big issue Mercedes is having besides the performance not correlating in sim vs irl, is not being as good at interpreting the driver feedback as they used to be
People say Nico Rosberg is one of the greatest ever drivers in terms of technical knowledge, yet neither Hamilton nor Bottas are considered anything near him, but Mercedes continued to dominate after Nico's departure, etc, there's many examples that Hamilton is a good driver with feedback, just not the best

Here is a thought....Toto's replacement = Otmar....the man is great at recruiting great engineering talent, big and small proof is Aston Martin, and Alpine. Including driver signings on both Teams. He understands the game and time or lead time to get to success. Mercedes is clearly on the rebuilding process. You noted well that old sponsors are leaving with Lewis and New ones coming in. That's good to have a fresh start with George and whomever else. I personally don't mind George and Kimi. Both strong and young, future of the Team. Like Maclaren boys. Why not bring Kimi to learn, crash and learn his rope while the Team is not fighting for Championship. Like George is doing now. People are laughing and ridiculing George for his mistakes. The thing that they don't know about George is, he welcomes mistakes as a learning experience. Especially now that they are not fighting for Championship. Like Max in Torro Rosso. He is sharpening his skills. I like that he pushes boundaries and test his limits. I am especially glad that Toto and Team have finally accepted that they're on the rebuilding process, so George's difficult weekends are part of learning. So, the sooner you bring in Kimi in the fold, the quicker he learns about the Team and experience he gets. George is a great Teacher and is great with young talent. Mercedes young drivers program manager Gwen, said he helps him with the Juniors. Even George said that's one of his passion for the future. Vesti has mentioned in many interviews how George helped him in F2. Even Logan in F4. He is Team Mercedes and would help Kimi in order for them to go against Lando/Piastri another young combo built for McLaren long-term future. Ferrari will also align Charles with a young Bearman. So, the quicker Mercedes bring Kimi in the better.
Max and George are my favourite drivers and I think would get on well. I feel they both care about driving cars more than the Marketing side of the job😊. They enjoy their lives outside the sport. Have great stable relationships and family and management. They'll be lethal together. Both aggressive drivers, love winning and ring everything from the car. Intelligent and technical. Their debriefs would be gold.
I think Dr Newey would follow Max to Mercedes. Imagine a combination of a super Aero specialist and Engine Maker of HPP. Wow.
Max and George would work for 3 years. Max doesn't intend to be around as long as Lewis and Alonso have been. While Kimi does a stint in Williams after F2.

As much as i love Seb, i would love to see it back, but i just hope thats not the washed one we saw at his end of ferrari and end of AM(even if he showed a little spark of comeback in end of 2022), if he gets in at least see him able to challenge George, and show why he was great during his 4th champs and in his Ferrari prime before his sad downfall.

I'm really worried, because if he wants to do what Michael Schumacher did at the time, I'm not very sure...many put Schumi's time at Mercedes as a stain on his impeccable career, I don't believe that, I genuinely believe that in 2010 it was going to be a Schumacher Alonso rivalry, however the Mercedes car from 2010 to 2012 was not the beast of power that we were used to seeing Michael, but I am genuinely terrified that something like this will happen with Vettel and this time I do not see Mercedes as a team that needs to evolve, but rather it has already reached its maximum potential and now it has not been able to adapt and I do not see the possibility of returning to being contenders for the title as close, I simply see them stagnant until 2026 and I don't want Seb to go through something similar to what happened at Aston Martin or something similar to what happened to Schumi

I would love to see Seb take the FIA head role. Seb has had a interest in the political side to F1 for many years which is unusual for a driver and I think he has a vision that would make him ideal for the top job at F1, he would also get universal support from all the teams.
