Gouache paint sticks for Urban sketching

  • I saw two illustrators (it was actually Sarah van Dongen who had them in her materials video on Domestika, not Koosje Koone who uses a different and possibly tempera version) using these sticks or ones like them and I thought they might solve an urban sketching issue of covering larger areas and not having to wait so long for paint to dry. If you've watched my other videos you know this has been an issue especially when not on my own... Luckily these arrived the night before our Toronto Urban Sketchers meetup last Saturday (and luckily I was well enough and it was outdoors so I wouldn't get anyone else sick). We were at the Distillery District so I knew I had to bring the brick colour along and some green. I only carried what I needed, not the whole set. I really want to treat these as an opaque layer so I'm not as bothered that they aren't as good as say Neocolor II's for washing out.
    Now I'm in no doubt that these are not the "Artist's Grade" as suggested by the box so these are for sketchbooks only and not commission work.

    I’m gonna take a guess that you’re from TORONTO !! The distillery district piece gave it away! Love your work!

      Thank you! Yes, I'm in Toronto and I live near the Distillery so it crops up a lot.

      They are fun. I just started using them on stone paper and they work so well on it too.

    Since they look a lot like oil pastels, can they be moved around with your finger? Feel better!

      You can smudge and move them a bit until they start to set up and then they basically stay put. You can add a bit water to get them going again, though. And thank you!

    Just curious if you have a sketch book for each year? I noticed you only wrote “ July 8th” with no year on the back of your sketch of the alley between the buildings. Love your sketches !

      My small sketchbooks that I use for urban sketching usually get used up very quickly and I also always write the dates of when I started it to when I finished (including the year) on the spine of the book.

      Thank you! I thought when it started as just a sore throat that it might have been smoke but then it went full head cold/sinus infection and knocked me completely out for a week. I'm now taking antibiotics. 😷

    What is the binder in theese sticks? Is it gum arabic?

    • @eileenreillyarts1229
      @eileenreillyarts1229  Год назад +1

      I have no idea. I used google translate on it and absolutely no product info for it. I'm assuming gum arabic or some binder that is water soluble.
