My wife got me one back in February, absolute game changer. For me the biggest impact was smallmouth fishing in northern Michigan on river systems. I'm screwed for life because I can never go back to a regular trolling motor. I've also fished thew windy bank in 25mph winds and the boat never moved when spotlocked. No more fighting wind / current, I can spotlock and change lures in the back of the boat and never worry about a thing. Absolutely amazing.
Matt, I just put an Ultrex on my boat and was really concerned about the noise, your vid made me feel more at ease. Thanks for all the info you two put out. I am a better angler because of TacticalBassin!
Agreed! As was said in the "how to win a tournament" video its prolly some of those 22 boats they pulled in caught 2 fish then bailed lol , that would be so EPIC!
Ted McCarthy It appears to me that the trolling knuckleheads giving the thumbs down must seriously be jealous. That Ultrex trolling capability can literally spin circles around these up to no good trolls!! Another awesome informative vid. Thanks Matt and Tim.
Ted McCarthy haters are always gunna hate..matt and tim hands down have the best channel out there for informative videos..and........they catch GIANTS..ive learned alot from these guys and they always get back to you if u have a question..
I have one on my boat and it is just like you said, a total game changer for the guy running the trolling motor all day. Now with spot lock you can fish more.
I have had my Ultrex for about a month now, after being on several waiting lists since about March. I absolutely LOVE IT and you are correct, this is without a doubt the best thing for fishing that has hit the market since the 1st Side imaging units hit the market. Nice job on the review. This is probably the best REVIEW I have seen on you tube and I have watched ALL of them.
I've had my ultrex for 6 months and holy cow!!! I can fish in the wind up to 20 mph and not worry about running a trolling motor and can catch fish at the same time. Game changer for sure
i know you guys don't typically do tournament videos, but with tim's background, i would love to see him do a co angler video. maybe talk what bag, what lures, rod reels. i know he did a video a while back about going out on a buddy's boat and not taking a bunch a gear but maybe elaborate on it with etiquette and style of fishing.
You guys have the best videos. I appreciate all of your knowledge you pass on. I got to fish Clear Lake for the first time twice this summer. What a special place!
A full boat tour at some point would be awesome. My father has the Terrova on his boat and the spot lock feature really is awesome. Now we almost look for really windy days to go out in because the positioning is so much easier to fish the spots the wind is blowing bait into.
Spot lock/anchor has been the the fishing game for few years now. If you have a minn kota the BEST feature u want is the I PILOT SYSTEM on your trolling motor. Minn kota has many older model AFFORDABLE trolling motor that u can add the i pilot system to it. The i pilot system will give u everything matt talked about. Especially More fish on them wind days. After fishing in a striper boat i had to put that baby on my bass boat 6 years ago
Dude, got my Ultrex a month ago...agreed, "game change!" Also, Just saw your chatterbait video -recommending I cut the blade off Keitech swimbaits...another game changer! New subscriber and believer...thanks very much!
You helped my with my number 1 fear ! The sound! I had a minn kota with only the electric turning head and I hated it for large mouth because it was so loud. This was the only video that addresses the sound issue. Thanks
I run the terrova with the spot lock feature, and i agree it's a game changer and, combined with the Humminbird helix 9 the "follow the contour" feature comes in clutch too! Great review! Love my Humminbird/MinnKota combo !!!
Use mine for trolling shiners for bass. Also use it for trolling bomber long a plugs for stripers in the st. Johns River. Great trolling motor definite game changer.
Finally catching up with the times. Been using those same features in my Terrova for 5 or 6 years. I'm not a pro by any means, just dont understand why more "pro's" dont use these. I've fished my motor with a dead battery in the remote, worst day fishing in years. Absolutely love my terrova!
I ended up going with the terrova i piolet link. Its a bit quieter than that ulterra but does not have automatic stow. I love it. I should use my spot lock more though. Esp for off shore underwater structure.
Great trolling motor review, thanks! I burn really bad in the sun and was wondering if you could tell me who makes the hooded shirt worn in the video. Thanks again, Tony
I got an itchy finger to pull the trigger on one. While on spot lock, does it keep the boat facing in the same direction? Or will the ass end swing around me? Thanks in advance
I fish some areas with no cell phone service. Have you had any issues with spot lock and other things in these situations? Or have you had any GPS issues as you have traveled around?
Matt what is the solar hoody you are wearing I've heard great things about them definitely helping beat the heat Thanks for the look. Tight lines guys also what don't you like about the trolling motor there has to be one thing that you wish was different or better
Is this video shot at Rattlesnake Island ? Awesome video as always... Any plans on taking the Kayaks back out ? Just for the heck of it..Tight lines 🎣🎣
Hey Matt ! Can you tell me if the remote is water proof and does it float? I pick up my new boat tomorrow and it will have the ultrex. I can’t wait to try it out! Thanks!
An autonomous trolling motor along with a medium sized TV on the front deck. For some reason it reminds me of the movie Short Circuit "Johnny 5 is ALIVE"!!! Lol
So what are your thoughts on how this will affect spooky fish when using the spot lock feature? Wouldn't it be better to drop the poles instead of the motor constantly kicking on and off?
So if you have a trolling motor with spot lock, is there any need for power poles/talons? I know that power poles/talons wouldn't be as stealthy while bed fishing, but other than that, is there any need for both?
Shallow water anchors are great for pulling up to the shore like at the boat ramp so your guest can get in the boat. this great for lakes that dont have docks
I been using the power drive v2 with i pilot for 6 years now it dont have a foot paddle but all i wanted was spot lock. The way spot lock/anchor works is it stay with in a 5 ft radius where u set ur anchor and moves around in that circle so to answer ur question yes it would still be nice to have power poles for shallow water. Like wat matt said biggest game changer is fishing a point on windy days just lock ur location and fish anywhere on the boat and another thing it works better in the wind cause it control the speed to match the wind so ur boat stay in one position. What u want is the i pilot system if its compatible with ur minn kota hope this help explain some
tall pine outdoors spot lock is idea for areas too deep to drop power poles. Also if you are in very shallow water power poles are better because a running motor will spook fish. Spot lock excells fishing off shore structure
How well do your batteries hold up with the utrex compared to your past trolling motors. Really do like the spot lock feature. Just saving up so i can upgrade.
I have a 19ft center console with 115 mercury outboard.. should I get the 80 lb or 112 lb thrust? They said 80 lb is fine on their list but I feel it's not... suggestions?
It will work but man, bigger is ALWAYS better. We both went 112. Matt runs a 20' and Tim runs a 19. We've both had 80's in the past that "worked"... now the boats scream.
Hey Matt........got one last week.........unreal...........this motor has changed the way I fish.......I fish a lot of docks that I can just lock on now
This may sound a bit silly to some but my concern with the heading lock is lack of a kill switch. Fall out of the boat and watch it run off and leave you. I have a Big Foot on my hand control. The first thing I do is take the run lock off of the switch.
How does it work in relation to the heading sensor? Does it hold your boat in the same heading when the spot lock is pressed? I assume you want to try and always point the bow into the wind before hitting the spotlock, but does it try to hold your heading regardless?
Ah, so the puck is just a gps antenna. I wasn't sure if it included a heading sensor (since it lives external to the motor -- like a Lowrance Point-1). Thanks for the clarification and the great videos!
Hey guys, this video was super helpful. I've been looking at different motors for my little 14 foot vhull and this was definitely on my list. Right now I have a 65lb 24v motor guide and was thinking about getting the new ProNav angler. What have you guys heard about this system if anything. I would love this new motor but for 500 dollars the pronav claims to have spot lock and even route creation via navionics. This kind of seems like a no brainer to me! Looking forward to your thoughts. A fellow west coaster.
Matt. One more question :-) I am about to upgrade my Fortex 112. Are you running the 45" shaft on your boat? I have a 20' Skeeter and I think the 45" is all I need.
I run the 52" shaft, so does Tim. We fish really rough conditions and I just hate propping out. If you fish a ton of shallow water its definitely easier with the shorter shaft.
Love your videos guys! I'm curious as to the shaft length you chose for your boats. I have a 20 ft Triton and am not sure if I should go to the 45'"or 52". I fish 70% of the time off the shore
They are two different tools but if you can YES! Honestly I -Tim use the talons here on clear lake a ton! Spotlock is awesome in deeper water where the talons cant reach.
Ha! I asked myself the same question. I'm going on 5 years with spot lock on my Terrova. and now Minn Kota is making it sound like it was just introduced. However my friend just got the Ulterra and his spotlock is for sure more accurate than my older Terrova.
Sure have as well as an Ulterra. The difference that was holding them all back was that they've never been cable driven before. The Ultrex takes all the features you guys have grown accustomed to and incorporated them into a cable steer (electric assist) foot pedal, creating the best of both worlds. No more toe tapping that foot pedal to get it to do what you want. Also from what I understand the GPS is wayyy more advanced and locks a much tighter location.
Watched a couple videos on the new cable control. Very nice. The foot control on the terrova before was not at all an option in close to shore in the wind, at least not for me. It didn't react fast enough and foot vs finger control accuracy was night and day. I imagine this cable foot control and tighter placement will shortly find its way to terrova if it hasn't already. That said, I can't see upgrading a later model terrova for those features as it's not a big deal, more a matter of knowing how to use ones equipment. Yeah, you guys are gonna love it. I had no idea you didn't have it already but Im in a lund Tyee with 3' of freeboard so not having a terrova with spotlock wasn't an option. Another plus to the spotlock. Great for taking a dip at a swim hole and not having to rope out the boat.
serious question guys, you spoke of the anchor lock feature. does that render your power poles, talons unnecessary? I suppose you could say that you'd be using a lot more battery holding a spot with the TM instead of putting the power poles down. To that I'd say the weight and $$$ saved not having power poles is worth carrying an extra battery(s). Remember when answering this question,"there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions".
Game changer ? Welcome to the game you mean, the Terrova and Ulterra have been out for years and have these features, in fact the Ulterra can do more such as trim up and down and of course stow itself.
Jarred Monaco I don't have an Ultrex but I have an Ulterra and the systems are similar. The motor has its own gps and can work standalone from a graph. But if you get one with the I-Pilot link it will talk to your graph and will pilot to waypoints and even follow depth contour lines on the map. And a ton of other stuff.
What's up guys, I'm curious as to why you went with the "i-pilot" remote instead of the "i-pilot link" since you have all the humminbird electronics. If I'm not mistaken don't they link together or something? Sorry this comment is a few months late....Happy Halloween lol.
Mat I disagree, i do a lot of diving and use the spot lock function when i do. I can TOTALLY hear the direction change of the trolling motor. I dive about 15ft and I can so hear it. It fact it a lot louder than the prop noise.
i totally agree that these vibrations are transmitted into the water. another thing to consider is the inaudible vibrations that fish feel that we cannot hear. Or that a camera inside of a waterproof box running a low sensitivity mic is not a good method to test. You literally need to get in the water yourself. Also realize that your ears lose their sensitivity from the water pressure on your drum from being submerged. We cannot compare our senses to the senses of animal that live and breath in a completely different medium. Fish can sense water vibrations from very far away that we would not even know exist.
Fish are accustomed to a lot of noise. Shallow water it may be an issue. But I have seen over and over again fish hitting right next to the trolling motor while it is running. Some lakes with less pressure it may be an issue but all in all....fish hear nonstop human induced noise.
Hey, as a guy who has fair skin and has put a few dermatologist's kids through college, I was wondering who makes your shirt in this video? It looks like it provides pretty good sun protection. By the way, I have the salt water edition of that trolling motor and agree with you 100%
My wife got me one back in February, absolute game changer. For me the biggest impact was smallmouth fishing in northern Michigan on river systems. I'm screwed for life because I can never go back to a regular trolling motor. I've also fished thew windy bank in 25mph winds and the boat never moved when spotlocked. Ted McCarthy exactly makes no sense! Always got a few ppl who don't appreciate great content haha

It appears to me that the trolling knuckleheads giving the thumbs down must seriously be jealous. That Ultrex trolling capability can literally spin circles around these up to no good trolls!!
Another awesome informative vid. Thanks Matt and Tim.
Ted McCarthy its the same reason why people on the internet bad mouth any expensive products. Jealous that they cant afford it.
Ted McCarthy haters are always gunna hate..matt and tim hands down have the best channel out there for informative videos..and........they catch GIANTS..ive learned alot from these guys and they always get back to you if u have a question..
Just got my first trolling motor ever, Minn Kota Maxxum with foot pedal. I got it for less than half msrp I LOVE IT!!!

That motor is the truth. When I get my bass boat that is a definite upgrade.

Thanks Matt, Ive been wanting one since I first say them at Icast. Now you got me wanting one even more. Great video.
Very cool piece of equipment, technology is great!
Has any one had any issues with the mother board? I've heard complaints
I just got done installing a Terrova 80# and ipilot on my champ. cant wait to get out on the water!!
Awesome review, thanks for the input. I'll definitely be adding one to my new boat.
Best if you stop, or maybe almost stopped, head into the wind, then set it, and it works much better and faster. Love mine.
I ordered one for my new boat. Can't wait to try it
Another great show, Kentucky
I like the "follow contour", and I adjust the offset. that is how I follow shoreline.
Great trolling motor review, thanks! I burn really bad in the sun and was wondering if you could tell me who makes the hooded shirt worn in the video. Thanks again, Tony
Mega upgrade guys for sure! Let's get that 100k yall!
Sweet set up!!
love all the reviews y'all do
What is the shaft length you selected for both of yalls trolling motor? And also what batteries do you recommend??
I have power drive Ipilot and the transducer cord has to be loose for it to slide up and down, Is the transducer cord built it on this model?
wow...technology at it's finest!
I got an itchy finger to pull the trigger on one. While on spot lock, does it keep the boat facing in the same direction? Or will the ass end swing around me? Thanks in advance
Is it better that the GPS antenna is by the Ultex? Is it compatible with Lowrance HDS units?
I fish some areas with no cell phone service. Have you had any issues with spot lock and other things in these situations? Or have you had any GPS issues as you have traveled around?
Ben Hallowell it uses gps not cell signal. As long as you have clear view of shy you shouted be good.
Matt what is the solar hoody you are wearing I've heard great things about them definitely helping beat the heat Thanks for the look. Tight lines guys also what don't you like about the trolling motor there has to be one thing that you wish was different or better
Any reason why you guys went with Talons instead of Power Poles?
Tim looked genuinely depressed to leave the tulles!
Thanks!
Talon and Power Poles are gonna feel it in their pocket book
Nah, still this things to use in water 12ft or less. ;)
An autonomous trolling motor along with a medium sized TV on the front deck. For some reason it reminds me of the movie Short Circuit "Johnny 5 is ALIVE"!!! Lol
spot lock love it i have a ulterra trolling motor
Great choice!!
So what are your thoughts on how this will affect spooky fish when using the spot lock feature? Wouldn't it be better to drop the poles instead of the motor constantly kicking on and off?
they fish a lot of deep water spots, the poles wont stick in 20+ feet
is there a large River2Sea emblem on the side of the boat?
So if you have a trolling motor with spot lock, is there any need for power poles/talons? I know that power poles/talons wouldn't be as stealthy while bed fishing, but other than that, is there any need for both?
Shallow water anchors are great for pulling up to the shore like at the boat ramp so your guest can get in the boat. this great for lakes that dont have docks

One day I will have such a nice setup... hopefully.
Love the reviews

Any reason to choose this or the Ipilot system? Or are their abilities similar with a personal preference? Great vid guys, as usual.
Hey Matt........got one last week.........unreal...........this motor has changed the way I fish.......I fish a lot of docks that I can just lock on now
Yeah buddy!!!!
This may sound a bit silly to some but my concern with the heading lock is lack of a kill switch. Fall out of the boat and watch it run off and leave you. I have a Big Foot on my hand control. The first thing I do is take the run lock off of the switch.
Good point... that would totally happen to me
How does it work in relation to the heading sensor? Does it hold your boat in the same heading when the spot lock is pressed? I assume you want to try and always point the bow into the wind before hitting the spotlock, but does it try to hold your heading regardless?
Its focused on holding location so if you're blowing in the wind you'll slowly swing around that center point.
Ah, so the puck is just a gps antenna. I wasn't sure if it included a heading sensor (since it lives external to the motor -- like a Lowrance Point-1). Thanks for the clarification and the great videos!
You can set the motor to heading, so the puck is doing both. But its a seperate button that you don't always need on.
What model champion is that and how long of a shaft did you get on the new ultrex?
Its a 19 footer. We both went with 52" shaft
lol Tim is like, get out of the way i am fishing lol
Hey guys, this video was super helpful. I've been looking at different motors for my little 14 foot vhull and this was definitely on my list. A fellow west coaster.
Please do a video on CONQUEST - new loomis & shimano rod. That would be interesting.
Oh no an automatic trolling motor the robots are taking over the fishing industry lol I want one more than enough benefits thumbs up
Ha!
Will you guys be doing a review on the Conquest SJR Rods?
Off-topic question: who makes that jacket you're wearing in the video? Looks protective and comfortable. Thanks
Thinking of putting one on my 15 ft dingy
Can y'allz do a review of the talons verses the power poles?
at the beginning was that county park in the background
Will you guys be trying the new 13 reel w no ball bearings?
Awesome video. This is something I need........ now just need to convince the wife :)
I just watched this review. Pretty thorough. However you didn’t mention battery life. What is your opinion?
We both got 52” because our boat sit high in the front.
Any reason you need talcon with spot lock?
They are two different tools but if you can YES! Honestly I -Tim use the talons here on clear lake a ton! Spotlock is awesome in deeper water where the talons cant reach.
Thanks Tim!
nobody used the terrova before? I've been using spot lock for years. Also on Deep lakes these keep one from having to use anchors/ropes as well.
Very interesting. Wonder if they went with a different/ better gps reciever and updated their programming or both.
What kind of bass boat you cruisin in guys? Just curious....make? Size?
19 1/2' Champion and a 20' Cobra
LoL, pulled away from Tims spot. hahaha.
serious question guys, you spoke of the anchor lock feature. does that render your power poles, talons unnecessary? I suppose you could say that you'd be using a lot more battery holding a spot with the TM instead of putting the power poles down. To that I'd say the weight and $$$ saved not having power poles is worth carrying an extra battery(s). Remember when answering this question,"there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions".
I love my motorguide xi5
Game changer ? Welcome to the game you mean, the Terrova and Ulterra have been out for years and have these features, in fact the Ulterra can do more such as trim up and down and of course stow itself.
Is it a manual or power lift/ retract mount?
Manual retract
Is the trolling motor linked to the graphs for gps or does it have its own gps system?
Jarred Monaco I don't have an Ultrex but I have an Ulterra and the systems are similar. The motor has its own gps and can work standalone from a graph. But if you get one with the I-Pilot link it will talk to your graph and will pilot to waypoints and even follow depth contour lines on the map. And a ton of other stuff.
Chris is 100% correct. Its a stand alone system but can be linked to do even more.
TacticalBassin the following of depth contours is the coolest thing I've seen yet.
Not sure how spot lock is just now a game changer. Minn kota had this feature are previous trolling motors.
GAME CHANGER!
What's up guys, I'm curious as to why you went with the "i-pilot" remote instead of the "i-pilot link" since you have all the humminbird electronics. If I'm not mistaken don't they link together or something? Sorry this comment is a few months late....Happy Halloween lol.
Yes i am Getting one
Mat I disagree, i do a lot of diving and use the spot lock function when i do. I can TOTALLY hear the direction change of the trolling motor. I dive about 15ft and I can so hear it. It fact it a lot louder than the prop noise.
Matt and Tim...can u do an underwater clip to verify this and upload it?
i totally agree that these vibrations are transmitted into the water. another thing to consider is the inaudible vibrations that fish feel that we cannot hear. Or that a camera inside of a waterproof box running a low sensitivity mic is not a good method to test. You literally need to get in the water yourself. Also realize that your ears lose their sensitivity from the water pressure on your drum from being submerged. Very nice. Does it follow a programmed route?
yes, you can also hook it up to supported chart plotters to program routes
It sure does.
Have you learned how to run contour lines, with lake master map cards??
What ln thrust is it ?
It comes in a variety of options but we both went with the 112.
*Looks super EXPENSIVE!* more expensive than my boat motor and trailer combined..
This is clearlake yeah?
what shirt is that youre wearing with the hood?
Hi Cole, that's an Aftco shirt. Actually if you open the video description we've got a link that goes directly to it.
Excited until I saw the price. Lol
Great review

Laughing a little as Tim was being patient and wanting to fish tules
i couldnt agree morr!
Hey, as a guy who has fair skin and has put a few dermatologist's kids through college, I was wondering who makes your shirt in this video? It looks like it provides pretty good sun protection. By the way, I have the salt water edition of that trolling motor and agree with you 100%
Steve Kurtz I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's made by Simms. Look them up on tackle warehouse
No it's AFTCO
why you saying fish off the back or towards the back ??? do you always fish towards the back
Forget the trolling motor. I just wanna know who makes that shirt you're wearing lol?
