Ever wonder what it's like to drive your car at the limit? Well you should definitely try autocross as it's one of the safest forms of racing and the least expensive as well! You don't need a highly modified car, all you need is a safe car in working condition and a helmet! Kevin goes through what you need to do to get started!

Great bit on leaving your ego behind. Miata's run the game at my local autox, and the only way you can beat one, is to buy one :D
Depending on the class. I was racing my stock RX-8 on street tires so did the two miatas so I actually won the class. Miatas on slicks is a different situation.
mk3 mr2 is a step up but very uncommon
@Clayton Salvigsen for the money you would have to dump into a civic you might as well just get an s2000.
@Clayton Salvigsen $12k would be a pretty screaming deal. I guess it would be best to start with something that doesn't hurt to beat the hell out of and I have wanted an excuse to buy a miata....
@Clayton Salvigsen whatever you go with should be enjoyable. Least you have an idea, I'm still in the chinese space program stage lurking on craigslist after god knows what. Maybe even a Fiero!
I'm just starting to get into actually working on cars and have been thinking of getting a project to take autocross racing. Video was super helpful and informative!
Also from Iowa. Been thinking about getting into autocross with my impreza outback sport. Not a wrx or anything but it looks fun.
I used to run a first gen VW Scirocco against Honda CRXes. What fun that was! It's been a while. First mod I did that helped: R-compound tires. Negative camber adjustment helped, too. GTi seats with side bolsters helped. First mod I did that didn't help: lowered, stiffened Bilstein "race" springs and shocks. They looked great, but made for a rough ride around the course, and no faster at all. I also added a roll cage. This ruined the car in the eyes of my wife who would no longer ride in it after that. :)
Great video and recommendations. I competed in the 90;s with GTI's and then moved to Road Racing...fast forward to today and I have a Porsche 914 and am looking forward to having fun with this car. I will not be even close to the fastest cars but I hope to compete with a few other period cars re other 914's and maybe a few Mini's as well.
Your comment about learning is so important...I recently encouraged another 914 owner to go to SOLO School. He had a great time and yes was all over the place but I think he learned and had fun too. Stripes to the Right will help new drivers find their way through the course...hopefully! LOL Thanks again, I cant wait to get back on course.
Great tip on seat! Having the right one goes a long way. Great video bro!!!
Lol I'm doing DMVR SCCA for the first time this weekend and your video is the first autocross video that shows up 😂
I really want to start. There are tons of events here in Vegas. Doubt my F150 would be much fun so time to go car shopping!
Autox is a ton of fun! Research what mods put you in what class and be prepared to buy tires because they don't last 30k.
thank you so much for creating such a great content . it was so useful
You guys are out of Iowa??! I had no idea😅. May go to my first Autocross this summer in eastern Iowa Great River Region SCCA
Excellent video. I want to see some of your runs. More content like this please
Buy new wrx, track and mod car, complain about poor reliability.
I don't like how this video tells you to go into modding your car without mentioning classing and rule books. Check the rules, and see what class you would like to run in before you modify your car. That wing you thought might look cool could throw you straight into Street Mod. This is one of the toughest things for new people getting into autocross have to deal with.
Oh no kidding, Polk county huh, I live about 20 minutes from there haha
Polk county NC?
Watched this vid on the Internet took me an hour to find it again on RUclips because I didn't save the first time! Great advice especially with the brakes..trying to get my Beast(88 Trans Am) ready for Battle..
Thanks for sharing. I learned so much. It llooks like so much fun!!!
Let it be known that something you claimed in the video is very inaccurate.
Almost every professional organization who host track days do NOT allow helmets beyond 10yrs of certification. This means as of right now, 2015 and 2010 helmets are acceptable, but 2005 IS NOT. They have not been accepted by most organizations since Jan 2015.
Additionally, you mention the helmet needs to be SA or M rated. Also somewhat false. Many organizations won’t allow M (motorcycle rated) helmets due to liability issues with insurance.
That being said, anybody buying a helmet who wants to be sure that they’ll be able to drive at their local event should be buying ONLY a SA2010 or SA2015 helmet.
Come Jan 1 2020, the 2010 helmets will no longer be accepted by many organizations as well
Not sure what organization you are referring to, but SCCA National Solo Rules as well as NASA allow for helmets meeting the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards which include: (SA2015, SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, M2015, M2010, M2005, K2015, K2010, K2005)
So SA and M rated helmets are accepted.
Looks like you're getting rules mixed up with track days. These are specific rules for autocross.
SubiSpeed pretty much every organization that hosts events in California and Arizona. Along with quite a few in Texas, Nevada, and so on
Sure, there may be a variance, but just about every one I have seen/participated with requires SA2010 or newer.
Perhaps it’d be better to say that it’s important to look up the requirements of the specific club you’re running with.
You show up to any of the events here with an SA2005 helmet or an M rated helmet, they’re going to laugh and tell you to go home.
If this just SPECIFICALLY for Autox, then perhaps. But even some of the organizations here that run Autox require 2010 or newer right now.
Knowing the specifics of the club are important. It’s not simply a blanket “2005 is okay”
It is always recommended to do your own research in your area. This video is only for reference and to be used as a guide just like all our other videos. Track day rules are different than autocross rules for most clubs. SCCA and NASA are two of the biggest clubs in the country and in their 2018 rule books they allow for SA2005 as well as M2005.
My club allows '05 and newer
Great video! Super helpful!
You from Iowa, I'm starting in cedar rapids this weekend.
Yo I live in CR I drive a black 06 subaru legacy. I wanna start auto-xing it. What do you drive?
Would you suggest an Air/oil separater before autocrossing?
Nice video, any suggestions for cars that are good for autocross, i have challenger RT which is heavy and tall for autocross 😅

On a RWD car, traction control on or off??
Depending on how the traction control works. There are 2 main types, the type that you want will apply the brakes to the wheels when they start spinning. The bad type will bog the engine until the wheels stop spinning. If it has the latter the traction control goes off
im 14 how would i start to autocross, i could not find any clear explanation in the scca rule book
Phil Butler if I’m not wrong you have to be 16+ I’m 13 and I’d love to start autocross but they won’t let me
Many clubs including many SCCA events have a Junior Kart program that allows kids as low as 5 years old. You'll have to check with your local club(s) for details.
excellent video for getting your car into SM classes where you’ll get buried by faster drivers!
Never autocross before, but I was thinking the same thing won't most of these change his class? He could at least mention that to the new timer
Yea but how can I find a autocross near me?

Thank for you knowledge
Out of 7 minutes, there is about 90 seconds of useful information for a complete novice here.
Wait really this is in Iowa lol I thought this was nowhere to be found in my state
Right smack dab in the middle of the state! 😅
What wing is on the blue wrx in the background
Manual or auto trans better?
What helmet was that?
anyone here cause they just bought their first miata? -bone stock 00” SE 👌🏼
I have the same car, bone stock too! I might replace my SE wheels with something wider though
@@wjm52358 a very good upgrade can’t ever go wrong with new wheels
What color is that wrx? Is it wr blue?
Yes it is WRB
So you're saying that if I've never done this before I should dump all my money into my car, refuse training, and act like I'm a professional

SubiSpeed thanks
Lol
If there is a miata that is faster than you, you are doing it wrong. I don't care what kind of car you have.
Obviously never driven a Miata.
Lmao shmiatas are definetely autocross and drifting machines ur a rookie if u don know that by now
Guess this is only for spoiled rich kids!!
Where is that even implied?
Autocross is the cheapest form of racing. What are you talking about?
Or get off ur ass and get a job
