  • Key to success at SCCA Autocross events is knowing where the course goes. Many instructors will tell you to look ahead, but how does that help? Take a course walk with multi-time SCCA National Champion Bob Tunnell as he walks you through the ins and outs of an autocross course, where to look, why to look there, and what the result will be. More than a basic course walk, Bob covers setting up for success at the starting line, how to "feel" the car on a course walk, why early apexing is vital, and more. Whether you're a beginner or a wily autocross veteran, there's much to be learned in this video.

With almost 20 years of autox'ing these are words of truth. Learn the course by walking it, then run it multiple times in your head, imagining when and where to make every gear change, every throttle and braking change and steering input. One of the hardest thing I had was keeping the pedal on the metal. I found that I kept relaxing my foot and losing speed and had to consciously keep the pedal down till it became habit. And remember "smooth is fast".
It's not what you drive, but how you drive it.

Wow! This is gold! Sharing so much of the best advice I had ever gathered over many years, and then some! Putting it all together isn't that easy, but it's so true to say 'familiarity builds confidence, and that builds speed."! Excellent video!

I'm going for the first time to MSA and I'm super nervous that I'm gonna get lost and look stupid as shit lol

I'm sure by now you've already gotten over your nervousness, but for anyone else reading this in the same situation, yes you probably will, and it's ok! I've recently started attending events as a spectator/photographer and every event has had one or 2 new people that have either understeered off course, spun out, or just flat out got lost. But you know what? After every run and event, every one has had a huge grin on their face. Take the L, gain the experience, get back out there, and you will get faster!
