All correctly named materials are in the description! If using UV resin, although less toxic than epoxy resin, it is still harmful to skin, eyes and lungs like bleach would be. Please use in a well ventilated area and with gloves. Not for use by children.
A good tip if your using bead ends(grommets) start with plain brown paper so that you can keep the fancy paper for the last part of the bead which will be showing. This is a good way of saving on the costs of the fancy papers over time. With the larger grommets you can use a cotton bud to clean out the holes.
Great video! I am going to try my hand at paper beads. If you don’t want your paper to go darker when you add the UV resin all you need to do is add a layer or two of glue or mod podge to seal the paper and it won’t change the color. ❤
I once had a necklace made by my grandmother who made paper sccr ap beads outo f rose petals, and flowers. she dried them, flat, then moisened them slightly and rolled them around slightly thicker twine. and then finished with clear nail polish, at least that is how she did it. I tried it with decopage, but the lovely aroma of roses and such was lost. so I used verywatered down elmers glue all on only one side of the petals, and rolled them, she often made them by crushing them, and then forming round beads. she also used a tube bead and formed them around it. ANYWAY they are fragile beads, and mine got smashed one time in a jewelry box, so I don't have it any more. she was from a farm family in the North West of Washington state, and had 5 sisters and they all made these.
nail polish will not last as long as UV resin. it cracks over time, the chemicals break down, and gets a yellow discoloration. I mean you're perfectly free to use nail polish, but just be aware of the long term effect :) informed decisions and all that. Liquitex does a pretty nice craft varnish with either matte or gloss finish. its not gonna be as durable as resin but you get a big bottle for a good price and it will protect your work. AND there are no dangerous fumes.
I used to do this years ago, back in the late 70’s early 80’s, saw it in an episode of “Why don’t you”, this was before the days of resin though, so used clear nail varnish.
Love these. Thank you for a very clear and informative video. One thing I like to do is put a dot of glue about 2cms from the start and in the middle of the paper, to keep the bead from unraveling. It’s far enough in not to stick to the needle.
You can use isopropyl alcohol to clean up the brush. I've been using the same brush for about 3 years now. It works great. And thanks for this video! I'm going to try it tomorrow!
Was so fun to watch this. In the early 60’s we made these with old magazine, colorful tissue paper and wallpaper sample pages. I love the more refined and loveliness of your work!❤ Jan
I’m 77. My great aunt made newsprint beads to hang a beaded separation in the archway to the parlor. That was her room when living with her sister in their senior years. I remember it clearly. I must have been 6 years old. 1952? No metal ends on the beads. No shellac. Very Art Deco in black and white. I’ve tried but failed to reproduce them. I thought she made them on toothpicks! Thanks for hints on the process. 😊
A great tutorial, and may I say, whilst not a part of the creative process, you have a lovely, clear speaking voice, with great annunciation. It makes a huge difference to the quality of any video when listening is itself a pleasure. 😺
I taught my daughter how to make paper beads. She made a set of necklace and earrings out of them. She entered them in the state fair and took first place. It was a fun project.
If you wipe the bead after UV drying - with an alcohol swab you can prevent fingerprints - and also use an alcohol swab to clean out the glue in the ends. Great JOB!!!
Since you're using grommets on the ends, could regular copy paper be used for the body and the pretty paper used for the top so as not to waste pretty paper?❤
The beads look fun to make and I love the outcome! Glad you mentioned using gloves although it's also worth a mention that you should be aware that resin (UV or otherwise) isn't just toxic to the skin but also to breath in, so using it in a well-ventilated space is important :)
Absolutely, as I mentioned in the video, UV resin is toxic (although not as toxic as epoxy resin) so yes it can irritate the skin, the eyes and the throat etc, but it's no more dangerous than bleach. Also keeping the lid on during drying is good and using a brush with little amounts at a time helps. It's much worse if printing with resin than just making small beads so as you say, gloves and well ventilated areas, glasses etc are all good practices when dealing with any toxic chemicals. I'll pin your comment ☺️👍 Also worth adding that once cured (dried) it's considered safe and non-toxic. So just the liquid form.
Many crafters go thru a paper bead making phase. I've noticed they wind up at the thrift store! But, these are a big upgrade and can be an addition to a Pandora style bracelet without looking out of place. Very pretty!
Yes eyelets here too, you're more likely to find them on the internet if you search eyelets otherwise you'll get lots of Wallace and Grommet listings 😄
Thanks for sharing. This is my 1st time not only seeing the way to make this bead, but also seeing your channel. This is so creative & I can’t wait to try it. Of course I subscribed to your channel & I look forward to watching more of your videos. Have a blessed weekend. 🙏💐🇺🇸
Beautiful! Glad I found you. I've made paper besds for years but yours are a whole new level! I love them and I am changing my style to yours. Thanks for sharing ❤🎉
I love making paper beads! I haven't tried sealing them with UV resin (I have various viscosity UV resins)..what I usually seal mine with is ultra thick clear embossing powder and versamark clear ink...a couple coats of that using an embossing heat gun and it looks great. You can clean the brush you used in the UV resin with isopropyl alcohol..i use 91%..it will keep your brush nice.
Your attention to detail is inspiring and very refreshing. Wonderful result when we take extra care and our time. Your craftsmanship is superb. 👏🏻 Did you come up with the idea of using the grommets on the ends? Very aesthetic and clean. 👌🏻
TIP* if you want to make more beads with the same pattern and you only have a little bit. Use plain paper at the beginning becauae it will be covered with the pattern paper at the end and you would only need a 2" piece of that. Think of how many more beads you'll have from one sheet of paper! From one 8x10 sheet you would get 40 beads if cut into 1" by 2" pieces as the outer, AND only layer seen.
Interesting take on it. Watching from America. I've seen it done with Mod podged as well. I like the rivet idea but found other rings of various sizes to make a variety of sizes. Although I had success with Mod podged. I will give the Resin a try as it seems very sturdy. 🤔 Thank you
Thanks so much. I wonder why I wasn't seeing Molly Makes Mags over here! Now I know why! Resins are too fancy to me, so I use pva glue.🤭 though I found some of the metal bits at my opshop. Now I know what to do with those!😂😂🇦🇺💖💖💖
they are beautiful! I would prefer to coat the inside of the bead with a bit of UV resin because any dampness could distort and blow the UV resin on the top. it would be just luck I placed my bag on the ground and they would get wet, the universe would conspire to make that happen ha!
Oh no! Molly Made is not making their magazine anymore? It really was a fabulous one too!! Newbie to your channel and LOVE this video!! I can't wait to give it a try!!
Would it be easier to place the glue onto the grommet where it touches the paper? Seems like it would save trying to clean glue out of the hole from over spillage.

Love this!!
TIP: Play at 1.5 speed and its perfect (you can hear everything) for people (like me) who get impatient with slow and long videos.
I watched it mostly at 2x speed and it was still too slow. The beads are nice, and got useful information out of the video.
I finish my beads with sparkling nail polish! Love the metal ends, I'll have to look for some. Thank you.🙂🙂

@@p4ngolin what about modge podge over it? Do you think that would be okay?
@@p4ngolin I don't have any resin products. What do you think about DecoArt Triple Thick gloss glaze??
What a big difference using the resin and eyelets makes. Thanks for sharing.

Made paper beads years ago, but these are an upgrade, love this new addition of the medal ends and UV finish. Appreciate all your videos. Thanks !
Glad you enjoyed!! 🤗
I love how you made these beads. The metal ends are such a good idea and give a lovely finish!
Thank you!!!
Just looking at the finished product, I wouldn't know that it was made of paper. What a great idea! Thank you❣

In the US, they're called eyelets...what gorgeous things you have created ❤
