Dentistman 30 I think, 60 looks great for video games and some types of videos (sports, tech especially), a full film would be a bit jarring though Of course as soon as I get my Oculus I'll be looking for 75 (or maybe it's 90), no less!
The external power can take input from anything that pushes out 2.4+ amps at 5 volts. I've got an Anker battery that pushes 3 amps that keeps the phone cool and allows me to use it for hours while still being essentially un-tethered.
Hey Tested, I have a question for you. How did you record the VR gameplay with the S6? I've tried using Chromecast but the video cuts out after only a few seconds, same with a dozen other screen-capture apps and such. The S6 has an issue when the headset mode is entered, but no issues with a Note 4. I'm curious as to what you did to record the gameplay?
also on a completely separate note.... do you know if there is an app that measures distance? maybe using the inferred capabilities on the phones? (specifically linear measurements, taking the place of a tape measure.)
Great video! What are you using to record what's on the screen? I want to be able to stream what people are viewing, on to my computer. That will make having my friends try it out more fun if I can see what they are looking at. Thanks!
I have the Samsung Gear VR for Galaxy S6 oculus. when i install my phone and the program starts. instead of it staying still it begins to wonder off in a spinning motion slowly to the left and it wont stop, so i have to keep spinning my chair around to get back to the program board. How do i stop this, its supposed to reposition its self to the main board but doesn't, it just keeps on spinning.Even when I am Playing anything it keeps spinning to the left. Please Help me
This is so true lol. ITs the newer gear it is a bit cheaper made and lighter but supports newer phones. The optics are the same though. Mine also fogs up when watching porn lol, Just get a defogging wipe.
Did they fix the heating issue with the Galaxy S6 in the GearVR? I remember trying it on at the Oculus booth and they had a huge drawer packed with fresh batteries to swap out when the battery got too hot, which was very often it seemed.
Norm that guy escaping was probably fully behind you, and you kept missing him because you only turned around so far left or right. It seems pretty cheap to always put it directly behind you.. lol.
All I watch Tested for now is to see Will snipe Norm like Vasily Zaytsev, and then to see Norm dodge that shit like the Matrix. "All the water in the sea can't sink a ship until it gets inside."
If that's a G4 he is not the only one who says it gets warm. Even though the 805 is supposed to not get as hot as the 810 when playing games. Although Austin's infrared heating video it was not too bad.
I purposely got the Galaxy S6 just cause they were offering a free VR headset with it. I tried one out before and it`s amazing. I hope the one I`m getting once shipped is as good as that one.
Can you login with one Samsung Oculus-VR Account on 2 separate Samsung S6 devices at the same time, using 2 Headsets of course ? Really want to know. MANY THANKS :) Or will your account get blocked ? (kind of like apples 5 device poilcy etc.)
I know this is ANCIENT, but it's only in the video capture. The Galaxy S6 simply didn't have enough raw SOC performance to render the game at 60fps w/ all the required VR trappings AND encode + wirelessly stream captured video of it simultaneously, without dropping frames on the video stream. The actual performance of the games/apps in the headset itself was still totally fine though. 🤷 (Aka, GearVR & now its Quest OS based successors were both setup to deliberately compromise the external video stream whenever it became performance bottlenecked BEFORE it would compromise the in-headset game experience, as doing the former isn't going through make anyone sick and potentially seriously upset. 🤷)
This must be the first channel on youtube that goes to 60fps before going to 1080p. Which is ridiculous, btw. And yes, I know some of the location shoots are 1080p, which is nice. Meanwhile, others are on the fast track to 4K...
Jupix I'd bet your one of those people who watch 4k videos and say, "wow that looks so much better than everything else!!", without being in a 4k capable browser.
***** The primary monitor for my entertainment machine (the one I'm writing to you on) is a Sony 55X9005 which is a 55" 4K hdtv. And yes, it runs at 60Hz through HDMI. 720p looks like shit on it like it does on almost any display device. 1080p is mostly bearable. I've been a 4K user since 2013, the first 6 months being in 30Hz.
I know this is absolutely ANCIENT, but it won't charge your phone. Just keep it from going dead. It's only passing through enough power to keep the battery life where it already is when actively in use, NOT charge the phone. If they had actually tried to do that, GearVR's notorious overheating problems would have been SIGNIFICANTLY worse. 🤷
Going by a 1-10 scale with the Rift being a 10, and the google cardboard being a 1, the GearVR is an 8 for me. The picture quality with the S7 is excellent, I would need to compare them side by side, but feels like less screen door than even the Rift has. Probably due to the high PPI. What it lacks is positional tracking, and real 3d depth. The depth is present, but not like on a Rift. Its a bit harder to judge distance in the GearVR
Im glad i noticed when this vid was made cos it didnt impress me what so ever. Hopefully they have come along way since then. Question... do the headsets really make your face that red? It looks like you have been wearing it for a week.
... I know this is ANCIENT, but the stuttery low framerate was only in the video stream not the actual in-headset experience (which was perfectly smooth), ya flipping dingleberry. 🤦😑 And GearVR/Oculus Go had LOADS of cool and fun software in its library! Some of the all-time VR classics like Virtual Virtual Reality were first birthed on that platform! Raw graphics fidelity doesn't make a good VR game, and never has. Interesting mechanics and immersive environments do (and immersion doesn't require high raw asset fidelity, but rather smart asset selection & environmental design). See PCVR's & PSVR2's increasingly dead & lifeless platforms vs the "significantly less powerful but fully standalone" Meta Quest 2 & 3 for all the proof you could ever need of this fact. 🤷
lol your actually replying to a comment from 7 year old tech 😂😂 your face still looks red from wearing it, it still looks shit. Fidelity is important for immersivness and there were plenty of smooth videos even back then ya dingle berry 😉
As cool as 60fps is, it looks SOOOOO weird to me. I kinda don't like it, the "suspension of disbelief" (as much as you can have even in these types of videos) is completely gone. It feels like I'm looking through a window.
Roy Anz I've watched many 60fps videos over recent years. They all (still) have the odd feeling that throws me out of the "movie feeling", especially feature films.
Rift will be better just by the fact that it will not overheat, it will not need cleaning of lens and phone because it is a fixed part... and because the power you have is the one of your computer. If they make it wifi or bluethooth, it will be great! But until Rift come to an reasonable price, GearVr is a nice demonstration that what Virtual Reality can be... but it's still far from what you will have with the rift... A nice introduction to VR...
+Skin Care Discussions i have own buddy, bought it yesterday and to be honest it's shit and i regret, cuz you have a app where you can ONLY download the content right in there, you CANNOT search for apps or have youtube or anything, everything you have is on ONE app that contains lame GAMES AND NETFLIX, but for the rest it's bullshit
+§☯Aceplayzrandom☯§ The consumer version of the Gear VR is coming out in november which will be the next step up. It's designed to work with a variety of Samsung 2015 phones.
Please Reply😭 Does the 2017(A324) version fits on a 6.5 inch unsupported phone? I don't need the oculus app, I just want it to fit, atleast for watching movies, and some daydream apk games. My phone is Realme C3. (6.5 inch) Thank you😊
GearVR doesn't work for Daydream. At least not well. The custom Oculus designed IMU in the GearVR shells that made it work so much better for VR than Google's "totally device agnostic" Cardboard & Daydream requires Oculus' custom software to function. Also trying to fit non-Samsung phones in a GearVR will only leave you sad, angry, and disappointed. 🤷 Just get a generic VR phone holder, or better yet just buy a fully standard Quest 2 (≈$250) or Quest 3 (≈$500).
I wish it worked with the Note 3 ;-; Shame that even thought Oculus Rift used Note 3 screens, it cant be used on a Note 3, I mean you can just put the micro-usb thingy out and put the phone in it, but then you can only use Google Cardboard apps.
Hi Norm and Will, I made a game called TraGect for the 2015 Mobile VR Jam and would love if you guys gave it a try! The gameplay is similar to Drift, but I did some things that reduce motion sickness to make it comfortable for longer play sessions. I also have a spectator app for pc/mac that would let you capture without affecting performance on the Gear. btw I always enjoy your videos, great job!
+oNe6868 Samsung gear from what I have read are slightly better than Google goggles, but in reality I have no idea I'm just saying what I have read from reviews.
+oNe6868 Far superior ... The reason why is very simple. 1. It has build in dedicated sensors ... unlike other VR headsets that rely on the shitty phone gyro .. the Gear VR is smooth as BUTTER , you can shake your had all you want as fast as you want, there won't be any lag, stutter etc, it's super accurate. 2. dedicated software 3. Made by oculus The only VR headset that has something I wish the Gear had is the one from Zeiss, the lenses one that VR headset are the largest I have ever seen, and zeiss is expert in lens making so that would have been amazing on the gear VR. Another slightly negative thing is that the Gear VR is not "really" compatible with the cardboard stuff etc ..If you plug your phone in to the gear it won't work, but you can place it in its place without plugging it in and it will work perfectly fine. That said .. I only tried one or two cardboard apps and never touched it again .. it was complete crap, after being used to the super smooth experience on the gear, the clunky gyro of the phone just ruined the experience for me, so I did not bother trying other cardboard apps .. Now I think about it .. it wouldn't be too bad to play a good free to play turned based 3D game/strategy game if they have any of those .. even with the shitty gyro movement.
6:43 This was actually inaccurate. 🤷 The GearVR hardware design was co-designed by BOTH Samsung AND Oculus/Facebook. John Carmack and his "mobile VR" team had SIGNIFICANT impact on the hardware design and feature-set of the various GearVR shells, even if the design & manufacturing process was still led by Samsung. For example, both the aspheric lenses (very similar to those that were used on Rift DK2) and the fully custom designed IMU integrated into every GearVR shell (as the IMU's already built into phones kind of fucking sucked for VR at that time) were 100% Oculus designs.
+3D-VR-360 VIDEOS I don't think there is a better mobile headset out here atm. It isn't perfect but good enough for the money. I can't wait to see the future of mobile vr :)
The frame drops are only visible in the video encode/stream NOT in-headset, which remains perfectly smooth. The same thing still happens to this day in Quest OS (GearVR's direct successor) with it still deliberately sacrificing the video stream quality BEFORE it compromises the in-headset gameplay experience. Why? The former isn't liable to make someone horrendously sick and potentially put them off VR for good. All it will do is mildly bug your buddies in the room that you're trying to show VR off to. 🤷
+Alluvian no...you either didnt try it....or your lying. I've owned one for about a month and the only people that haven't been impressed tend to be older adults that get dizzy from the motion I know that being impressed is an opinion but when it comes to virtual reality it hardly is considering how revolutionary it is.. this is true and if you have a problem with it you need to realize that many would agree with me.
+Alluvian although its consumer friendly, its still technically a developer edition, just like all currently available Oculus products. So there's not much marketing due to the fact that only the more tech savy would be interested.
The people that claim this is unfun have obviously never tried it and are against Samsung, or are Apple fans...but guess what? Apple could make the EXACT same thing then apple fans would talk about how its so "great"
+kronyx Used to cost 200 now 100, also you completely forgot the fact that it has dedicated sensors build in ... otherwise it would work like a slightly better carboard. The head tracking is insanely good
Voluntary Insubordinate Lame... like trying to do high quality gaming on your cramped phone to begin with. Who cares about the super high pixel density of the screen when it doesn't have the power or the thermals to really take advantage of that screen quality?
The problem is, while it looks really good in this side-by-side, the actual devices have a really bad screen door effect. It's like sitting too close to a CRT television and seeing the aperture grill.
***** Perhaps my expectations were higher, but to me it looks like sitting too close to a CRT television. You can't take 8 or 900 some odd pixels and make them look 50 inches without the dot pitch showing up. The pentile display makes it worse because the colors are laid out in an RGB delta configuration, which means it's impossible to have straight lines, and to my eye it's really distracting and looks like a CRT.
Enjoy tech? Check out Projections, our series about AR and VR: bit.ly/2ufaYr2
I am anticipating this and the oculus more than ANY other game or console!
60 FPS is great.

hadroncollidier Haha i shouldn't laugh but Norm is probably allergic to everything lol
hadroncollidier might have a prob with latex as do i
Yeah, that was a legit allergic reaction.
the benefit of the faceplate on the Note 4 is that there's just enough space for the 10,000 mAh ZeroLemon battery to fit perfectly
I love that the game "Drift" berates you. "Come on..." it said.
Great stuff as always guys. It's strange to see Norm without his glasses.
I want that realistic Dr. Zoidberg prop!
I see that Pebble Time! Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it.

I would KILL for a VR Svorched Earth remake.
?can i play 3d games with the gear vr outside oculus program , like ordinary vr glasses ....without connecting with the phone
What will be a better phone to use with the new gear VR coming in Nov? Note 5 or the Galaxy 6?

would you mind showing me where a imei is on the back cover of an s6 last i checked it was under the battery or at least behind the cover
So the new Samsung vr that comes with a controller can u use 2 controllers or just one

That was thoroughly entertaining!
( PS.. Will > Norm )
Can you play horror games on Samsung vr such as the insidious game ?
Audio is very rumbley, did you forget to turn off the AC? Or maybe forgot to roll off the low end?
What is being used to capture these vr videos?
are u both sunburnt or are the reds too high?

+thodwrhs μ It will not recognize the software if it even fits.
i need gear vr for note 4, but nowadays not easy to get it one :(
The latest Samsung VR fits the note 4 and its only 50$
Can this GearVR be hooked up with a PC?
Ibuki Upheaval No native support, but AFAIK you can stream your PC screen to your phone. Check out this guys (THEGAMEVEDA) channel.
Ibuki Upheaval officially no, altough there is some 3rd party software for it but it will not be a great experience.
What exactly broke on this? Seems like that should get a lot of attention for a $200 piece of plastic.
Alluvian The best experience you could imagine. If you can afford it, just buy it, wont regret.
***** ??? This does not answer any question I asked, and I have actually played with the Gear VR for the note 4 and was very unimpressed.
Apple could make the EXACT same thing then apple fans would talk about how its so "great"
Price of Gear VR is absurd considering that you are paying $300 for 2 lenses a fan and a box that you strap to your head.
+Werner Bruin The added fans would be nice, but I'm not sure that it is worth $300.
+Werner Bruin if this would have apple logo it would cost 600$
+Werner Bruin And here i am with my s7 preorder and getting it for free, but also without the free offer, its gone down to only 99 usd
+Werner Bruin I really think the $100 price is not expensive at all. (where did you take $300 from?)
+kronyx Used to cost 200 now 100, also you completely forgot the fact that it has dedicated sensors build in ... otherwise it would work like a slightly better carboard. The head tracking is insanely good
hi man . gear vr 2 s6 performance bad or good ?
sorry ı m bad speak english :)
where can people get this?
ignore this comment
why does it not have its own screen with a remote to get on to the Wi-Fi
+matrix86 Lol I quite enjoyed reading that
I love when it asks you to remove your overheating phone... LAME
Voluntary Insubordinate Lame... like trying to do high quality gaming on your cramped phone to begin with. Who cares about the super high pixel density of the screen when it doesn't have the power or the thermals to really take advantage of that screen quality?
Right

+Voluntary Insubordinate I think it's because he's streaming it, it never overheats for me.
I don't know why the videos are not sharp and still can see the pixels ?!! Am I missing something ??? Not really sharp to be impressive
+ShareEnjoy VR Because your seeing the video via a chrome cast which compresses the stream.
The problem is, while it looks really good in this side-by-side, the actual devices have a really bad screen door effect. It's like sitting too close to a CRT television and seeing the aperture grill.
eformance not at these resolutions. unless the optics are horrible, screen door is minimal. only thing really wrong with this is $200 for a shell.
I have one for the note 4, trust me, it's like sitting too close to a CRT.
Is this worth buying?
