DOSBox isn't a source port. It's an x86 PC emulator with an included version of DOS designed to be compatible with MS-DOS applications. You aren't running a source port, you're running the original version inside the emulator.

Eduke has the biggest modding and total conversion support as far as I'm aware, so it's my brand.

I honestly believe that one of the biggest factors of shooters overcoming platformers in terms of frequency/popularity was because of Carmack’s open source policies. Think about it; by opening up Doom/Quake and being chill with “Doom-clones”, thousands of modders/fans got to take a crack at making a first person shooter, and when some of those modders became game devs they carried the experience they had to make shooters for the next 20 years. Meanwhile, Nintendo and Sega have locked down their IPs and patented their game mechanics; while platformers flourished in an era where game development was highly restrictive, they didn’t let any up-and-coming creators have any experience with working on a platformer themselves. As a result, it’s taken decades for platformers to resurface in response to game development being made easier and patents expiring, rather than the immediate and overwhelming boom we saw with shooters in the 90s to 2000s.

Now that Blood and the other Build Engine games can be playable without DOSBox, the only game left that is powered by the engine that's impossible to play right now on modern systems is Extreme Paintbrawl, due to its use of both a Windows 95-based launcher and a MS-DOS-based executable which both won't run properly on any modern versions of Windows.
Unless one wants to reverse-engineer that awful game and make a source port that uses a unique launcher to replace the Windows 95-based one, its probably going to be left in the Windows 9x/MS-DOS realm of the Build Engine.

well the reason winxp and on had no dos support was due it being a different kernel than what was in windows 1 - 3, 95, 98 and me. xp is based off of the windows nt kernel, which was their server kernel. windows 2000 would be the first main stream os that was built on that kernel, though it was still mainly a server os. drivers for win 2K are mostly compatible with xp. since the original windows kernel was built on top of dos, it made sense to have dos be accessible. but for the nt kernel it would had to have been emulated since nt was not built on dos.

I believe you could always turn autoaim off by editing the game's CONs. I know because I used to do it. Always hated autoaim except when the game first came out and was keyboard only. But I get why this might be too technical for most people and why people have largely forgotten it.
I mostly use EDuke32 and Raze. Raze I use more for other Build games. EDuke32 is just great for most other cases (though you do mention a few use cases the other ports are better). I just hate that EDuke32 has some consistency issues. For instance the last time I installed it, one version would crash when attempting to load HRP. Another could load HRP but couldn't find other GRPs. I've always had weird issues like that with EDuke32 over the years. Raze has its own issues too. For instance, I can't figure out how to load other GRPs in that and had to use something else to play the Deadly Kiss GRP that was posted to the internet years ago.
I wish there was a solution that just worked and did everything you'd want right out of the box. Though at least they're all better than the old Windows Shadow Warrior port that would randomly glitch and rotate the screen.

Also, the fact that the 5th episode has the Cycloid Incinerator. He's a mediocre boss because he uses his flamethrowers at long range even though its close range, giving you more time to shoot it before it shoots you. Also, the fact that a Gearbox Software employee mentioned that Randy Pitchford is no longer interested in Duke Nukem, and avoids referencing him other than cameos.

Can't do speedrun glitches thanks to the clipping overhaul, I dunno why but I'm positive that the Shotgun feels slower and you can't quickly switch it right after shooting to another weapon like you can in more faithful ports. Megaton is king but it's forever gone unless you already own it thanks to the terrible WT port. Raze and Rednukem are good too but I do not like Rednukems HUD weapon placement like the RPG being way over to the right.

I think the issue is most people played back then 640x480 not 300x200 or whatever he was doing.
I'm pretty sure The original goes as high as 1024x768 but on my PC i cant get a good consistant frame rate on that with dosbox. Dosbox also includes scaling which could also improve image quality if you have powerful HW.
As for DOS games being the golden era, nah your just nostalgic and forgetting all the negatives. DOS caused a lot of issues unless you got lucky and had the best "compatible" PC for that individual game, if you got unlucky having the wrong sound drive, the wrong port address(yea remember that crap?) the games either dident start or bugged out. It was a golden era in terms of creativity but not that great for players, games were still experimental rather then anything else more like akin to arthouse films rather then good entertainment, you can see some gems among the top games of that time but most of it was very messy. Interesting sure but messy.
Take dungeon crawlers for example, the first one came out in 81, but it wasent untill the early 90's they started to include a automap and even then it wasent untill the mid 90's where that became the standard, which would have been obvious from our perspective.
Lets also not forget the issues with clockspeed, DOS games were often created for a specific speed rate in mind, if your PC is to slow the game will run slower, if to fast it runs like on steroids, future profing was often not a thing.

When is someone going to make a Duke 3D editor akin to Ultimate Doom Builder? Been waiting for years.
