So it wasn't about him singing it live or not .. He could've, if he wanted to .... His real intention was to show the whole world the new Michael Jackson, seperated himself from the Jacksons and focusing totally on his moves ... on that day MJ created "Michael Jackson - The King of Pop" ....

It also meant Michael could focus on the ‘performance’ over the vocals as he knew what he was trying to achieve with it, and while he’s the greatest singer and can sing live amazingly, this particular performance wasn’t about that.

Billie Jean live in bucharest romania ‘92 or at the Wembley stadium in london in ‘88 were wayyyy better performances than this one, no lip singing and was a better dancer/performer but this performance tho not his best is one of the few reasons the thriller album became the best selling album ever worldwide, second place is not even close.
