Fun fact the US fleet planning to invade Kyushu had Japan not surrendered were also hit with a Typhoon shortly after the surrender. It heavily damaged most of the merchant ships and quite a few warships.
Japan's weather is not friendly to enemy fleets.
It isn't weird. There's typhoons every year, it's like hurricanes in Florida. If you pay attention, each campaign lasted months. It was a matter of time before they got caught in a typhoon, and they spent plenty of time. It was bound to happen. Also both times they were already retreating. The Japanese beat them fair and square. Edit: Still, thumbs up.

@@valandes1861 "Kamikaze" is the slang for their Aerial Suicidal Tactic and most people thought that's what the word means. In the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, this tactic was actually called Tokubetsu Kōgekitai (特別攻撃隊) which means Special Attack Unit.

Etymology of Kamikaze; Kami => God, Divine, Deity (Old Hunnic word from Kam) Kaze => wind, way (Proto-Turkic word from Kaz, modern use => Enkaz; rubble or literally a messed up way)
And yes, Kamikaze literally means Divine Wind and also Divine Destruction which was used by the Imperial Army. :)

An interesting fact maybe worth mentioning is that, even though the Japanese were victorious, the invasions did destabilize the government and led to its collapse. Traditionally, Japanese warriors were awarded after combat with the spoils taken from the vanquished (usually land), but since this was a defensive victory there were no spoils to share. Disgruntled warriors and their daimyo became more and more rebellious, and the financial burden of the defense was being felt heavily. Japan always was a collection of estates more than a unified country, and the outcome of the invasions drove these estates and their lords further apart.
i mean, even before mongol invasions japan was a land of warring factions. a little over two or three times i think that japan was actually united in one banner? correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the shogunate that was established before the mongol invasion was because of the mongol invasion in the first place, thus they weren't really that stable in the first place.
@@futoifutomomodesu3206 The Kamakura shogunate was established after the Genpei War (1180-1185). Japan did not see the first Mongol invasion until 1274, so I doubt the 2 are connected. I'm no expert on the Kamakura period though so I could be wrong.

@@futoifutomomodesu3206 Maybe you're thinking of the Asuka period? The Imperial system was created as a copy of the Chinese because the Japanese were afraid that their loose confederation of Uji (clans) would not hold up against a united China if China decided to expand its territory.
To be more exact, After this battle,The Hojo clan reinforced thier influence across japan.
This state is called the exclusive control of the Hojo-Tokuso family.
As a result, Emperor and the other powerful samurai clans repined against the dictatorship of the Hojo clan. The Ashikaga clan is one of them.

Abe Rod Nope, most of its history was just regent, not regent of regent. I don’t think the Tokugawa Shogunate ever really had a regent of a regent being the supreme leader.

@@lucadelaurentiis6907 I don't know if what you said is true or not, but I don't see what it has to do with what I said. Assuming that the emperor is a figurehead mostly dominated politically by the shogun, then there was a certain period of Japanese history where the shogun was in turn a figurehead dominated by a regent or some "shogun's assistant" or something like that. However, this was only a small part of Japanese history. Most of the time, the shogun was the direct ruler behind the emperor, and was no figurehead of anyone else.
I don't think Ieyasu abdicating to his son and/or heir counts as a "regent of a regent" because they're still both the same institution/"faction".
@@ZhangK71 Ieayasu wasn't actually a "regent of a regent", but he was too much of a relentless and cunning politician to completely and voluntarily cede power. He was shogun for a mere 2 years, between 1603 and 1605, then abdicated in order to avoid the same fate as his immediate predecessors. He was exposed too much in that position. But he continued to rule the country as the ogosho until his death in 1616. You can easily find information about this on the internet. His son and heir became the new shogun, but it was, and it is, clear where the real power resided.

The storms helped a lot, but only because the Samurai were skilled enough to keep the Mongols in the water. What an heroic defence. (And just killing the Mongol's envoy after that first attack was a boss move.)
After first attack, a young shogun thought they will come back. So J built stone walls of 2~3 M high and 30KM long alongside Hakata bays.
Although Mongole 140,000 army and 4500 ships reached Hakata, they could not land for two months, Japanese were only one third of mongole army, J were waithing and fought off in front of walls. Mongole were backed off to Islands near Kyushu , four times. but J attacked at each island where Mongole were. Finally Mongole built stone walls for protection on the island and surrounded the island by their ships. J was good at fight against one by one. So during night J crept into their ships and kill. Mongole tactics were fight enemies as groups from distance with arrows or riding on horse. During two months, their tactics became defensive only. Then Kami Kaze came.

Sometimes you can learn more in video games than school.
I wish but my teachers only teach western European history but not cool shit like the Romans but medieval+ so we don’t learn about the Ottomans, Vikings, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, Native Americans, etc, etc.
American school teachers don't care about Japanese history. They're more political commissars than educators these days. To them, history is something that needs to be rewritten in order to fit the narrative.

By the way, someone should mention the incredible similarities between the Mongol invasion of Japan and the Persian invasion of Greece in the 5th century BC. The similarities are crazy: 1) In both cases the aggressor was the largest empire in the world, an unstoppable force that never faced defeat before 2) Number of invasions for Mongols and Persians before they gave up the campaigns: two! 3) Persian fleet was destroyed by a storm close to Chalkidiki - Mongolian fleet was destroyed by the typhoon 4) Persian invasion led to the unification of the Greek city states and the self-identification of the notion of being "Greek" - Mongol invasion had exactly the same result in Japan!

Yes! And the fact that both failed against underdog nations significantly smaller than them (the two smaller nations having their culture and warriors still renowned today and considered badass, which I find awesome). Both the Achaemenid and Mongol Empire collapsed soon after as well, albeit one was through literal conquest by ya boy Alexander and the other just fractured and dissipated. Still tho, so many similarities.

@@law_boii But then interestingly both Alexander's empire and the Mongol empire met similar fates - both became divided because there was no real succession plan and generals who squabbled over who the next ruler actually should be decided to just settle for having the empire carved up and each general having their own land to rule.

The hakata sea wall still has some surviving sections. Stakes were put in shallow areas to impede enemy mobility.
Respect to Japan for withstanding 2 Invasions. I always loved the History of Japan and their Samurai and also I like the History of the Mongol Empire, rising from a short horde to a world power.

@Lynz Ally because japanese feudal warfare were 99% land based. Even as an island nation Japan never developed sea faring ships and they didn't seem to need them.
@@devilhunterred Well they had some pirate-groups operating against Korea as it is mentioned in the video, and if I remember right japanese pirates even attacked sometimes chinese coasts. Not a mighty navy, but ships who could sail that distance and back could be not that bad (of course they may have used island as foreward bases).
There was another large one in 1019 by China and Korea. 300 ships with 3000 men . Tsushima was invaded by surprise, took women&children of 1200, killed 300. There is precise number was recorded but I can not remember. The monk reported to Bakufu/Government for help and reported what villagers&he saw. They ate human fresh uncooked and domestic animals including dogs. Japanese were horrified.

Fun fact: the Japanese sea wall defending against the Mongol invasion was built by Japanese clans, each clan constructing and maintaining a section of the wall individually. So the quality and height of the wall would vary from section to section, with very little standardisation.

Any plans to continue your Hundred Years War series? I saw in your Crecy video you had planned to make the series 4-5 videos but that was a couple years ago.
Many Europeans and Americans sincerely believe that the Mongolian army has twice failed to invade Japan like the divine wind. In fact, the Mongolian army was organized by ancient Korean soldiers, but because they built ships in haste, they were not very experienced in actual fighting. In addition, Japanese soldiers at that time were quite strong, and it is true that they responded to the invasion of Mongolian soldiers by boarding Mongolian ships and using their manure and fire well to defeat the other soldiers.

The encounter with the Mongols was certainly a shock for the Japanese samurai, who had never experienced anything like their massed bowmen or gunpowder bombs. But a combination of stout Japanese resistance and a devastating typhoon made the Mongol expeditions a costly affair. The funny thing is the Japanese looked like a pretty easy enemy to defeat given the highly ritualized character of samurai warfare, which was only possible to sustain because the samurai almost exclusively fought one another. When Kublai Khan mounted his seaborne expeditions to Japan in 1274 and 1281, the samurai were initially wrong footed by an enemy who ignored their combat protocols like inviting enemies to single combat, but this was mainly because it was not a Mongol custom and because they did not understand the Japanese language. Nevertheless they still managed to successfully resist the Mongols, with the help of the kamikaze (divine wind). And so the Japanese did not fight a foreign enemy again until the 1590s when they tried to invade Korea.
Wrong. Japan and Korea had countless skirmishes even before the Imjin War. Imjin War was when Japan and Korea and Ming actually had a much larger scale of warfare.
And Japan also invaded Ryukyu before invading Korea.

Fun fact: Mongols successfully invaded Sakhalin Island on north of Japan. Sakhalin is geographically really close to Japan, but during this period, it was unknown to chinese or mongolia. Maps created at this time always showed Japanese Isles and Sakhalin were further apart than it actually is. If Kubilai knew about this he might have invaded Japan from North since they already gained control of Sakhalin.

There is not much use to conquer and empty land. North America wasn't that populous. What conquerors of the type of Genghis Khan looked for were not empty lands but large populations to pay them tribute.

This video shows kublai khan in an entire different light to what is usual in pop culture. In my experience, kublai is often portrayed as a wise leader who effectively became chinese, leaving behind his mongolian ancestry and whatnot. I've never heard of his abscence of government, his military mismanagement and his overall responsibility (or lack of) in the empire's later fragmentation.
Every time I hear "Kublai Khan" I think of the Marco Polo TV Series. It was so good! And so was this video! Thanks.
You're one of the minorities somewhat, I liked the series, I haven't read the Marco Polo book nor did a ton of research on Yuan Dynasty Mongols but the show was good tho cliff hanger

I can recommend a pretty good anime called Angolmois Genkou Kassenki, depicting the Mongol invasion of Tsutshima, it a semi historical and semi fictional account of the samurai encountering the Mongol warfare.

@@someorclad9738 also Ghost of tsutshima lool interesting although it is pretty fictional not to mention the mongols in there are inaccurate depicted as they look stereotypical "barbarian" look while in reality they are pretty much organized and have standard uniform based on Chinese and Koreans armor
@@hanchiman You got that right. The Mongols were pretty much a full on Imperial force by this point. In the game, they look more like Huns if anything. But hey, it looks awesome so who really cares. Shame it doesn't have a Sekiro or Bloodborne like look (Gothic anime inspired rather than full on realism).
@@someorclad9738 oh yeah. In terms of beautiful Japanese armor depiction. I think Nioh is pretty much the best one. All the armor that Willy was wearing were based on famous general and daimyo historical armors. They even have info of each armor.

It would be great if you did a video about the battle of Didgori which took place in 1121, in the Kingdom of Georgia. This huge battle is so underrated and unknown to the world, yet it was a massive blow to the Seljuks and beneficial for the Crusaders
