As a Vietnamese, I basically only learned about it as a child and never saw it again, definitely not something widely talked about in classes or media outside of Vietnam. They used the same tactics as Russia did with Napolian troops. They ordered their civilians to evacuate to mountains and jungles then burned their crops. Mongolians thought they could get food from civilians on the way but they faced ghost towns and villages. They captured Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam but saw no food.

Mu Qri They did. But most of the foot troops and supports were Chinese, not Mongol though. And they did fear having to come back to Vietnam for a fourth time only to die in vain doing their Mongol masters’ biddings.
Hoang Mai Many Song soldiers and generals helped in the defence against mongol invasion of Vietnam as well.
Mongols on the other hand were ruthless and barbaric therefore they didn’t gained any loyalty from most of their Chinese subjects, especially in southern China.
So glad you guys did Vietnam, its an underrated historical event!

@@superspies32 agree that our language had some influence from china but we already have our language. Just like every country's language have some similar to the other countries next to them. Actually the latin just a bunch of letter that translate what Vietnamese people speak. In 14 century Vietnamese people created our own language, it's look like chinese but Chinese people can't read that, we call it's Nom. Nowadays no one in our country use Nom because we use the latin so long and can't get back to Nom. Just some University about our Vietnamese language is teaching it for student and some people have interesting on Nom are learning it them self or with help from old people or University teacher.
@@Sealdeam Yes! How did you know this? You must be pretty well versed in that era of history haha! (much more than me) I think Farnese was one of the greatest strategic minds of the 16th century. Diplomatically and militarily. Check out the Battle of Gembloux, of the 1584 siege of Antwerp.
@@Foneio The spanish were fortunate to have some of the greatest military minds of consecutive generations at their service, among them the Duke of Parma; I know something about that because that period (1492-1648) alongside roman history and the american civil war are my favourite subjects, so it was more chance than anything that I recognized the portrait of Alexander Farnese.
A small country with 4000 years of history, torn by war after war, invaded by superpowers time and time again, but the Vietnamese were not erased from world map. They still preserve their original identity, and eventually grow to become a decent country. That is quite impressive if you think about it.

Vietnam used to be under Chinese rule for 1000 years at their beginning.
But once they woke up, not any empires can occupy their land.
Chinese, Mongol, Manchu, Portuguese, French, English, Japanese, American...all failed to occupied the holy Vietnamese land.
It's not a coincidence, it's the strong will of the Vietnamese that defends their independence.
Yes, southeast Asia is hard to invade, jungles and islands are only for the locals.
However, this also means southeast Asia countries are hard to expand.
@@svenkorlos5146 southeast asian countries doesnt have any problem to expand their country. You can find Srivijaya empire and Majapahit empire. They are a thalassocratic empire who conquer the area which today is known as Indonesia and Malaysia. There are other empire which can conquer a lot of lands there like Singhasari Empire, Demak Sultanate, Tidore Sultanate, etc.

Some Malay group people actually colonize Madagascar even before the Bantu people from Africa colonize it. The people in the eastern part of Madagascar actually speak the old language of the Malay group language. It is also a well known fact there that they have trade with the aborigin people in Australia long before the european found Australia but they never colonize it, some researcher even found some cannon from Majapahit/Demak era in the northern part of Australia.

Historically Vietnam was ruled by France for a hundred years and by China 90% of its existence.
@Hoàng Nguyên the fact that they did. China, France, Japan(few months during the WWII), and US(technically for 2 decades) have successfully invaded us. However, to conquer and to invaded I do believe they are different. To conquer is to blend the culture, destroy national identity, bla bla. Thus, I mean there have not been yet any nations on Earth had successfully did it to us. The reason that skinny nation is still on the world map is because of national identity. The idea of Việt people, neither communist nor republic Vietnam.
To be fair Dai Viet was under control of China for a quite long period of time, if I remember correctly maybe around 1 millenia, and comeback as more like autonomous revolts during time where China has some internal conflict, more than we won the fight. The part where I dont really understand is why in such a long time the Vietnamese didnt absorb Chinese culture enough to recognize themself as Chinese.

Well to be honest, if one Great Military Army invades Vietnam in this modern time, we will not stand a chance. The Mongolians failed in the past because they were not similar with the geography, tropical diseases spread among soldiers, and according to Vietnamese history, the general of Dai Viet army back then was great with tatic. None of those things would help in modern day since modern wars are fought by nuclear bombs, battleships and biological weapons.

Not really it was under Chinese rule for a thousand years. During the Ming Dynasty , Yongle Emperor conquered it and ruled it as a province , but his son , Xuande decided that Annan (Vietnam) wasn't worth it and abandoned Vietnam

@Remember the legend Then gets defeated. Afghanistan was originally called the graveyard of empires not because they defeated everyone rather anyone who occupied their land never slept well and eventually found their empires collapsed. Vietnam was very similar, every Chinese dynasty suffers a collapse due to either invading Vietnam or occupying Vietnam. The only longest existing dynasty in China history is the only one who never invaded Vietnam. It is the Zhou dynasty (1000 years before Qin dynasty).
@@generalaccount6531 The Vietnamese left the capital and retreated was just a strategy to set up the trap and use the Capital wall as a massive jail-cell, and cut off all the supply from the outside, that why the capital was left empty when they captured it 6:34 and 9:27, so while being tired and hungry and left starving for months the Vietnamese know the troops inside got sickened and tired and weakened, the Vietnamese finally planed the attacks and kill whatever left within the capital walls and take back the capital.

@sinnerandprejudice Vietnamese did use guns. Actually, a lot of guns, since they did have a period of civil war before where many belligerents employed guns, even western guns (due to trade) in mass.
The problem was that by the time of European colonization, like many other kingdoms and empires in the region, Dai Nam (the name of the kingdom of Vietnamese) fell prey to isolation, extreme conservatism and corruption. Military was regressed, while the restriction of trade and prosecution of Christians, blocked them from the access to more advanced weaponry. While France was equipped with breech-loading guns and rifles, Vietnamese had mostly smoothbore, muzzle-loading guns and firearms. France also had steam ships (not sure if they employed these ships in the invasion of Vietnam, though). Better ships allowed them to bring bigger cannons to siege Vietnamese castles, which were often situated near rivers and shores.
It's not like there is one graveyard of empires on this planet. Alongside Afghanistan and Vietnam, you also have the Balkans. Probably other places too.

@@siddave549 who say it's easy? The first Mongol invasion on our country was so terrifying that even our own history record have to admit their force is unstopable. Heroes and generals died like flies. But we somehow learned along the way, and fought back with more efficiency.

ok, several mistakes here:
- you guys use the "Lý Dynasty flag" instead of the Trần Dynasty's one
- the capital's name at the time was Thăng Long. "Hanoi" was used since 19th century
- Hóa Châu and Thuận Châu were established in 1307, so they haven't existed then
- Toghon marched into Dai Viet from the northeast, not from the north. He defeated Vietnamese forces at Vạn Kiếp and then captured the capital, before Sogetu reached northern Vietnam.
- Sogetu was killed in a battle in Red River Delta, not at the border
- In the third invasion, Omar's fleet sailed upstream all the way to Thăng Long, returned to the coast to pick up the supply fleet, but failed to meet it. Omar then went back to Toghon before he ordered a general retreat

Not really. The biggest issue was the lack of instituonalized power. And even that is relative: usually nomadic empire would collapse right after the original leader dies (see: Attila, Modu, Togon/Esen and the like).

technically usa wasnt defeated. they hadnt lost a single battle to the viet who were decimated. but orders were to never cross the DMZ thus having no capital to invade thus no clear goal. A war against guerrillas and no clear goal is a war that would wage until the end of time

Daiviet and Champa is two kingdoms, two ethnics. Both of them were Chinese's colonies. Both of them get independence from Chinese ( the first is Champa, after that is Viet). They soon became the rival, at war with each other everytime ( exclude this Mongol's invasions). Finally, Viet conquered Champa during 15th century, and total annexed them during 19th century.
Because Vietnam territory, have many civil wars between " North Kingdom - South Kingdom" after that ( Mac - Le; Trinh - Nguyen; Tay Son - Nguyen;...). However, almost of them actually " North Viet Kingdom - South Viet Kingdom" instead two different ethnic like Viet-Champa.
It is funny that American mistake that Champa is the ancestor of South Vietnam government during Vietnam War. Actually, South Vietnam government is the children of these Vietnamese who conquered Champa.
This isn’t really true for this time period, because the Chams were not actually considered Vietnamese nor did they saw themselves as that.
The Chams were forcefully annexed in early 1400s by Vietnam and since the Vietnamese forced the Chams to adopt Vietnamese costume, language and culture overall, forced assimilation basically.
Champa is not Vietnamese.They are close to Khmer or Malay.Viet ethnic(Dai Viet) defeated them in 15-16 century and annexed them into our territory.The next part would be annexed by Vietnam is Mekong Delta from Khmer Empire in 16-17 century.Vietnam is not only a defender,but also a conqueror.

There were no storms in Vietnam history books. General Tran Hung Dao (he's not a prince but cousin of the real prince) knew food supply was important to any invasions. He ordered his army to attack the food supply and then purposely left the capital empty. That was all about tactics. Tran Hung Dao is one of the three greatest generals in Vietnam. The other two are Quang Trung (18th century) and Vo Nguyen Giap (The French know him, the US know him too).

Actually, this is already the third battle of Bach Dang in history. In the first one in 938, Ngo Quyen repelled an invading Southern Han force, which ended an almost 1000-year-long Chinese occupation in Vietnam, and created the independent kingdom of Dai Viet. Even more interesting is the fact, that Ngo Quyen used the very same trick on the river against the larger Chinese warships, as Tran Hung Dao would use again some 300 years later against the Mongols.

Your question about the source of strength of the Vietnamese people determination of staying united in fighting off oppressors is a very good question but hard to answer. It can be our traditional culture. It can be our love of peace and knowing the value of freedom and independence after thousands of years of struggling experience. The strength might be from the love of the blue sky, the calming river, the peaceful rice fields and strong bond between villagers or neighbours.. The spirit has been seeded in our blood/DNA. So that whenever the nation in danger, the Vietnamese people from most paths of life would become one. I believe that if a foreigner who lives long enough in Vietnam would act the same way :-)

Nice video, but you miss some important detail. When Mongol people capture Thang Long (Ha Noi), they got nothing but an empty city with deadly trap and deadly disease, no food, no people left for them to exploit. That represented how well the people are willing to cooperate, with their government. They are willing to abandon their life, their home and every one of them become a soldier even for women, kid, and elder just to defeat the invader. That is why the Mongol always easily capture Thang Long (Ha Noi) as well as why they always fail after doing that. This strategy is a strategy that requires fully cooperate of the people and iron will to defeat the enemy or die. It's called "Vườn Không Nhà Trống" - "No Man City". It's a different version from the version in China that Zhuge Liang use to scare Sima Yi. Vietnamese's "No Man City", is a deadly trap. I think there are not many countries are tough enough to make their capital into the bait. If yes, please comment, I want to know more :).

Huge appreciation to the ones who made this historical video and all the international friends that showed big love to us Vietnamese! Well I would unhesitatingly state that there is no other countries which is undaunted, consistent, brave and persevering like Vietnam. These virtues are what kept us survive through 1000 years of Chinese colonisation (officially, because they came back many times after that but we never gave up on maintaining our land), Japanese, American, French colonisation, and also are the reasons why we triumphed over Genghis Khan's great army three times! As a Vietnamese, I myself sometimes feel unbelievable as I always wonder how incredible Vietnamese people are, to keep on standing up when enemies shoved them down; to keep on fighting no matter how many years had passed, how many blood we had spilled, how many pain and loss we had to endured; to insist on believing that we would win no matter how powerful the enemies are, because we fight for our justice, for our sovereignty and territory, for our belief and for our people's life. And we did, we won all the fights against strongest, undefeatable, most powerful armies! We made the impossible possible. Oh dear, can't tell how proud I am to be a Vietnamese.

Thank you for bringing knowledge of Vietnamese history to the world to better understand Vietnam. Vietnam's most prominent battle against invaders on Bach Dang river, I love Bach Dang river tactics. It witnessed many battles defeating the Southern Han invaders, the Song Chinese troops, the Yuan-Mongol invaders of the Mongols, many of the enemy troops died causing the river to turn red.
Good history lesson. Kublai didn't know when to quit. History repeats itself even within the U.S.

actually, there're 3 battles of Bach Dang (in 938 against Southern Han, 981 against Song and 1288 against Yuan), and they employ the same tactic too.. I don't know if the Chinese didn't record these defeats because they were too humiliating (hence falling for the same trap again and again), or they knew but didn't tell their Mongol overlord out of spite..
That and don't forget with dynasty change, there was the burning of records, accompanied by negligence. That's why they say "History repeats itself."
And you are correct, Vietnam used the same terrain meta for those battles aforementioned.

But the Vietnamese who currently live in the South are the descendants of the Vietnamese in the North, so why should they hate their Northern kin? It like asking if the Chinese in Guangdong still hate the Chinese in Bejing - it makes no sense whatsoever..
but when it's about a different culture, then yes, the non-Vietnamese in the South don't particularly like the Vietnamese. During the 2nd Indochina and Vietnam war, many minority groups tried to establish their own states within Vietnam, fought against both the North and South government. And the anti-Vietnamese sentiment is still quite strong in Cambodia, with many Khmer still consider that Vietnamese stole their rightful territory (that also the reason why Khmer Rouge turn against North Vietnam).

Peter Scholl-Latour was a war reporter about french Indo-China and later on during the US Vietnam war. He spent many times in that region during war campains. In his reports he always admire the Vietnam people how tough and resistant those, for a western person rather petite-looking people, are. Once he witnessed how they completly spent 5 days and nights living and moving in endless tighten dirty tunnels, men and women w/o any kind of comfort and were still able to counter attac!
I knew the Mongols invaded Vietnam at one time. But only knew scattered details of how it failed. Nice to know now. Thanks to whoever made this video. Your awesome.
Great video about the invasions. Just a little detail to add: the letter "李" refers to Ly dynasty, which was prior to Tran dynasty, who governed Vietnam at that time. The letter should be changed to "陳".

We've been studied this throughout our history. I always feel super proud hearing our teachers teaching us about all the battles of prior generations. I hope the -love-our-country-by-protecting-it spirit which was staying and flowing in our blood will be passed on for many more later generations. That's how VietNamese people have live WITH their magnanimous history for many centuries.
