It is tragic, but thankfully there are whole lot more that have been saved. If you’re interested in this time period of songs, there is a very hefty archive made by Alan Lomax. He travelled across not just the Deep South, but the world recording various folks songs, hymns, and melodies.

@@JohnZiTAB yes , thank god for Alan Lomax. The legends he recorded! I dont know if its true but my father once told me he saw a documentary in wich they said that during ww2 the us military used steel from old music recordings to build bombs, military material... if true its unbelievably sad.
