- It's not often when Lincoln Riley gets questioned about his offense or his playcalling. But following USC's come-from-behind triple-OT victory at home, the questions are coming. Every week Coach Riley joins the Trojans Live radio show, and this week he broke down USC's last offensive sequence in regulation. I offer an opinion as well.
In the show's 2nd segment, I look at some of the numbers from the last week's game and what they mean going forward. I have no grades to offer, although Pro Football Focus said it was USC's worst game grade and that comment was used multiple times for nearly every unit. With that said, there were some positives too.
It's USC vs Notre Dame Week, so we're going to talk about the game this week and from every angle. I've never experienced a Trojan victory in South Bend and I'm hoping that streak is broken. Despite the game results, the weekend experience is something ANY college football fan should try once. And that includes where to eat, how to get to the game, and what to enjoy when you get to Notre Dame's campus.

The consistency of the USC offense is an issue . Caleb can play better . These kids (10-15 of them) are stars in the support group. They need to produce.
This group can win any game - time to show they can overcome any issue.
I won't be at ND but it is a trip everyone needs to make.
Visit to ND was a bucket list trip. Completely agree about the amazingness of the campus and the friendliness of EVERYONE we interacted with both on campus and at local bars. Even tailgating EVERYONE was friendly and inviting. Regardless who you were rooting for. I was wearing 'SC colors and was welcomed everywhere. Just good people.
Offense speaks for itself. So does the defense.
Been scouting ND......they play tough at home , the ND coaches will have there players fire up ! It's hard to win up there ,
Caleb Williams changes the plays alot. But LR isn't going to throw his QB under the bus. Caleb Williams is Steph Curry, Michael Jordan, historic players that went rogue from the play drawn up. As a coach it pisses you off from time to time. But you live with it because it's also what makes you great. You think LR called a pass from the 5 yard line? Hell no. Matter of fact he eluded to it on Trojan live.
Marc, Did you see this. USC ranks as the worst defense of anyone in the current top 20 and its not even close at # 109. If it wasn't for (No 22 LSU) who's even worse at # 121 USC would have the worst ranked defense of anyone in the top 25.

The drive from Chicago to South Bend sucks. First to have to drive through Gary Indiana. Gary is one of the most polluted area in the entire US. Billowing industry smoke stacks fill the landscape. It's an ugly drive anytime of year and, especially in the fall and, winter!

C. Williams - after a rocky start - made a number of good plays Saturday that showed up on the stat sheet as incompletions. Two passes were dropped in the end zone after great scrambles to elude pressure. Three or four other tough but catchable balls were dropped by receivers, including the sure-handed T. Washington and D. Singer.

Coming up next are 5 of best defense USC will face this year. This is where they rank and how many pts they give up each game.
ND # 15 15.9 pts a game
Utah # 6 11.8 pts a game
Washington # 27 18.40 pts a game
Oregon # 5 11.80 pts a game
UCLA # 9 12.20 pts a game
The best defense USC has faced statistically was Arizona ranked # 50. Oregon, Washington are not only good on defense they have great offenses too. Utah, UCLA, ND can run the ball.
Oregon opponents to this point: Portland state, Texas tech,Hawaii,Colorado, stanford. Those defensive rankings to this point doesn’t mean much. It starts against Washington.
Washington opponents to this point: Boise state, Tulsa, Michigan state,Cal, Arizona. Thrown those rankings out as well for them. The tough part of schedule starts this week. Same as usc and oregon
@@dj72989So Colorado is a common opponent. Colorado scored 6 pts against Oregon and 41 against USC. Who has USC played? None of their opponents had a better than #50 defense. Do you know the combined record of USC opponents is 10-24 and they have the # 109th ranked defense? 😂
@@hrpickinstuffnobody is debating whether usc has a bad defense. They do. I don’t think it matters who usc plays they will give up a ton of yards and points lol. I’m just saying for the other two teams that actually play defense those numbers don’t matter against the opponents they played to this point
@@dj72989Washington's combined opponents record is (14-15) USC combined opponents record is (10-24) its not even close Washington has played a tougher schedule so far basically a bunch of .500 teams. They also have a common opponent. Arizona. Washington held Arizona to 24 pts Arizona scored 41 on USC. Id say the defensive rankings are accurate.

I'm sure others saw it - HTW CW had a small wrap? Thin cast? Tip protector thingy? on the pinky of his throwing hand during the Arizona game. Didn't see it at the post-presser. And on those 1st 3 consecutive 3-and-outs, 9 plays netting 6 whopping yards, he sailed and missed virtually every pass. So lots of concern there since HC LR won't discuss it.
No Branch as I thought, down-trending sputtering offense (down from 60+ PPG to 3 TDs less), the assumed horrific leaky, poorly-coached, allergic to tackling, non-communicative, confused, out of position, sloppy zone coverage, wide open over the middle on every play defense, together means we are in DEEP kimchee. Now if we win 70-42 I will come on here and eat a footlong shit sandwich. But we are in trouble.
I found the sideline comms even using HC LR's funky and normally highly efficient icon-dense and silent mouthing system to be lacking, late, and listless.
We MUST run the ball first against ND. We are the dog in Vegas. They don't trust our D.

Understand Riley is a great offensive play caller as long as he has Heisman caliber QB's running his offence. Mayfield, Murry, Hurts and Williams. Without them he is just a run of the mill OC.
He has never been HC material. He will never win a trophy. He proved it at OU, and he will prove it to USC.
He’s missing a decent DC. You can’t say though he’s not special when he took a literal walk-on in Mayfield and the kid set records playing for him, or Murray who didn’t work out at his first school, who broke some of Mayfield’s records, or drastically improved the draft stock for Hurts, who was benched for Tua and came up second. Guy has been an HC for like 7 years and he has produced half the Heisman winners during that time. It’s literally about the sin of hiring and retaining a friend that is preventing him from winning it all. Considering how many years he’s already been to the playoffs and only ever won less than 10 games one time in that span, you are definitely overstating the whole head coaching material point.
Caleb probably reading his own press. All that crowning himself celebration stuff is going to put a target on his back. And now his play calling? Bad judgement. Voters will be looking for a reason not to vote for him. We’ll have to go undefeated and leave no option.

It’s up to the coach to protect him from himself but I don’t think Caleb has earned that type of criticism. He’s put the team on his back more often than not and is as much a factor in bringing back SC to relevance as Riley. All Trojan fans should be grateful we’ve been able to claim perhaps the greatest QB talent in generations as our own. I’ll take the teeny tiny negatives with the tremendous upside he brings. Even playing “poorly” for his standards, he still gets 4 TDs and no picks. I get the chills every time he trucks as a secondary player or LB rumbling into the end zone. I’ll never forget watching him play.

Mason Cobb is the best LB according to the coaches. But yes Raesjon is good too Mrs. Davis.
Lee and Cobb or Lee and Gentry, need to play the majority of the snaps.

I don't care why he takes offense. Reality is reality. I know for a fact we were not as healthy as he wanted us to believe going into the game. But also coyness prevailed with injuries that were not injuries as well. mindset is weird. It doesn't help. And NO COACH - you DON'T want to score on every freakin play. As for grades; O line gets an F-, worst I've seen in a long time, but not all the sudden. Receivers get a B- only because Rice did so well both blocking and that long pass. Dorian Singer was really bad and Taj not that great but he was clutch in 3Q, and TE's not even used much at all, so INC is their grade.. I thought CW came up short and weak at the goal line and that it was a make up call they gave him the TD. Look at the tape. DB's get a B- only because of Bullocks heroic bat down in the end zone. RB's get a B+ due to Lloyd's effort, but still under 150 yds rushing. Yes CLR wants to pad CW's stats first and foremost - don't kid yourself. And he nearly got burnt and doesn't seem to realize how close to an L he was. Staff gets another D+ in this game only because we eked out a win somehow, except Grinch and Donte who earned F's. D line was spotty but good hustle so a solid B. All this doesn't bode well for the trip to South Bend. Vegas has us a 3 point dogs to #21 ND. They only give us a 40% chance of winning. Glad I went to ND when we got a W - can't image leaving that place with an L. We did the bus but gotta do the train next time. Love to go with you sometime, but I couldn't stomach Erik that long.
This USC team cannot keep playing this way and have a great season. 5 losses could be in play. 4 for sure. I hope I'm wrong. We will see.
We shall see… I have no faith in Grinch’s scheme but Caleb plays his best when the stakes are highest and I still have faith in our D Line.
