  • In this edition of Instant Analysis, USCFootball.com reporters Jack Smith and Shotgun Spratling discuss USC's "disappointing" 48-20 loss to Notre Dame in South Bend.
The question has been asked for the last two seasons what the Trojans would look like if Caleb Williams had a bad night. In the worst game of the junior quarterback's USC career, the answer was apparent: poor.
The Notre Dame defense swarmed Williams all night, causing the reigning Heisman Trophy winner to throw three first-half interceptions that all led to Irish touchdowns. At the halftime break, the Trojans didn't have a seven-point score of their own and trailed 24-6 despite the defense's best efforts.
In the final 30 minutes of action, USC put up more of an offensive fight, bringing the deficit to 11 points in the fourth quarter before disaster struck. Before what would have been the USC defense's most important drive of the season, Notre Dame returner Jadarian Price took Eddie Czaplicki's kickoff 100 yards to the house. The instant answer by the Irish after the Trojans' laborious touchdown drive put the game out of reach and served as a perfect symbol for the night. Most everything came easy for Notre Dame. Nothing came easy for USC.
Jack and Shotgun break down the lopsided matchup, touching on postgame notes and quotes from USC head coach Lincoln Riley and Williams. The two touch on the biggest points of struggle for the Trojans, the few positives to take away from the game, and what USC needs to address quickly ahead of next week's home contest against Utah.
They hit on USC's offensive line incoherence, Zachariah Branch's special play, as well as a lack of pressure from the Trojan front. On top of that, they name some of the biggest stand-out players like Zion Branch, Tackett Curtis, and Brenden Rice.

The offensive line and the D are the problems. You can say ND had some short fields, but they scored. They weren't held to FG, they scored 7 every time but one. This ND defense got several 4th down stops vs Ohio State. That kind of defense is going to cause havoc and the OL couldn't help. This is why Caleb played poor, he's not been pressured like this. If the USC D was playing half as well as ND's, the TD would have been limited - keeping them in this game. That did not happen. Everyone needs to accept that if USC expects to have any success vs Oregon or Washington. Candy coating wont cut it.

This is Riley's 7th season as a Head Coach at 2 ELITE blue blood football powers. His teams now have a specific and undeniable DNA. Great offenses and great QB's Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams. His best team was his first team in 2017, which still had some Bob Stoops toughness left over.
Since then, his teams continue to lack the toughness on both sides of the ball to win a CFP game. Each trip back to the CFP in 2018 and 2019 were worse beatdowns. Last year Utah out toughed them twice, the D blew a lead against Tulane in the bowl game. Last night a ND team leaking oil, just physically whipped up on USC's offense. To win a Title something will have to change. Recruiting, coaching staff, how they practice, strength & conditioning. Something has to instill more toughness to take the next step

Everything you said is totally true. It will only get 'magnified', when USC joins the Big -10 next year, because different than the Big -12 (Lincoln Riley's old conference) & Pac-12, the big -10 schools as a whole don't have as many playmakers as SC, (where at the beginning of the year, we talked about going 8 deep in the receiver rotation), However, what the Big-10 presents is toughness in the trenches, ....remember when SC lost to Minnesota a few years ago, who was a dwindling-middle big-10 team.
The DNA will have to change, that goes for everyone down: (1) How USC Recruits, (2) The Strength & Conditioning program, (they just still look all around smaller than Notre Dame/Ohio State, Georgia, etc.), the toughness from within -IE. tackling, wrapping up, reading, pursuit to the ball, and also offensively-grimmy guys on that O-line, like SC use to have with Carroll- where you had guys drafted like Sam Baker, Deuce, Matua, Tyron Smith, Winston Justice on a regular getting drafted. Let alone the lineman who were drafted annually in the 70's & 80's. The Culture needs to be seriously revamped for the FUTURE!

While that's NONE of our business according to the Gestapo! but he is urging us to come out and support.
Whatever he's been cooking behind Trojan walls, shows me unconditioned players lacking much needed strength.
I used to run the sand dunes in El Segundo and would see players there back in the Carrol days. I wonder if riley's coaches and players know where the Dunes are located today.
I attended the Arizona game and had to walk up gate 19 to section 214, and was huffing some after the climb. In my high school days I used to do 10 runs from the field to the very top of the Coli.

Lincoln Riley only knows how to win games one way......passing the football. All other facets of his team are of small importance. As much as people are enamored with QB stats and highlight plays, winning in the trenches, playing with good technique, and physicality still wins a lot of football games. I'm not a fan of QB coaches turned head coaches because they have the same DNA. Kiffin, Sark, and Helton all shared the same approach to football as Lincoln Riley. Riley just happens to be better at coaching QB/passing offenses.

You’re seeing it exactly how I’ve been seeing conditions transpire all the way around.
He coaches a cool kid mentality. I think to the detriment of Rattler.
He did let that young player roast entirely way too long.
I’ll even go so far as to say the when Grinch showed up at OU, the defense was the only part of OU football that showed any sign of improvement.
To myself it became painfully obvious that anything the defensive side of a LR regime would be scraps only.
I know it will be an unpopular statement to make but I truly believe this team would make remarkable improvements if Grinch were to be in charge of the overall team player budget. Especially since the NiL and collective.
Grinch doesn’t make excuses and he lights fires on the sideline. Most of all he is being restrained with player recruitment. I believe Grinch is being asked to box with both hands tied behind his back.
I hope USC grows wise enough to see this. I know they’re pissed about the lack of defense, but the head of the program still dictates which recruits get what and where.
I couldn’t blame any four or five star recruits for not wanting to be associated with the way LR runs his programs. The Air Raid offense is all about not letting defenses get set. Managing practices with this mindset only subverts defenses.
While that dynamic may sound simplistic, I do not believe for one second that Riley is lending it one ounce of consideration.
He is literally coaching defensive basics out of his stables.

It’s time to get a coach with a defensive mindset, who will add tough line coaches, and then you work on your offensive side and special teams side. Pete Carrol came to SC and first thing he does is hire Coach O. Defense was tough and that made our offense become tough, facing a tough defense in practice prepared the offense line to become tough. Football needs to be built in the pits, and the rest follows. Time for SC to look at what all head coaches they won national titles with and see how tough their lines were. It’s time to hire the right coach, not someone who does more time looking for the wide receivers and defensive backs. Build the damn pits up and the rest hollows . Fire CLP!!!!

Sadly, Caleb was AWFUL. This wasn't a bad night for Caleb; it was the worst performance by any USC quarterback at ND I have ever seen. No one could have "bailed Caleb out" tonight. Receivers were open, he threw to the other team. A running back can't bail that out because USC no longer had the ball.
Riley's coaching was awful. The play calls were bad. Riley's failure to hire a special teams coach is his failure. The 4th down call when the game remained in doubt was awful. The entire team lost composure. Penalties were a hot mess.

Why do these guys uninformed of the dumb calls on offense. Example; 5 to 6 plays on run hook and stop and wait for the pass to arrive. SC cannot play that style against quick and aggressive defensive back. The for some reason the coaching staff went back to passing to receivers on the run. Good things started to change; but, it was too late. The two big guys on the edge back peddled to protect against the defensive ends; are too slow and go beat on the edge. A change to the blocking methods would have helped by putting their large hands on the defenders shoulder could have help. It was just a terrible coaching. Remember the coach carries the team. Like a stage coach. They failed.

I didn’t know if who was telling me this was legitimate or not at the time. It was just replies to comments on OU game summaries the year Riley left.
The multiple comments made lined right up with exactly what transpired.
One read of those comments the year before and the year Riley left anyone could see that the hard core OU fans were sick and tired of what they were seeing.
Most were even blaming Riley for screwing up Rattler by coddling and playing cool kid with him. Too many statements made about how Riley was too enamored with Rattler rather than coaching him up for success.
      I can not disagree.
Riley seems to insist on “playing it cool”.
I couldn’t blame Riley for leaving when he did. I was sure the off-season wasn’t going to be positive for him under the circumstances.
What I didn’t expect is the level of subversion that was executed.
I’m sure many of the players were reading much of the same scrutiny and it didn’t set well.
The Riley regime invites these situations on its players by nature.
He coddles to the cool kid dynamic. Never once have I seen Riley light a fire under any player and that’s always been the common denominator for this kind of game results.
