Universal was working for a couple months but now it isn't... I've tried all of your troubleshooting tactics and nothing has worked. I wish it had because this was a really useful feature!
Hey Mr. Macintosh, I’m using a MacBook Air 7,2 w/OCLP and an iPad Air 4 and I’m trying to get universal control to work but the link option doesn’t come up under display. I’ve followed your instructions to the second, and I’ve made sure that they both have the same account and tested if AirPlay worked, and it does. Sidecar works well (a little laggy but it’s useable) but universal control doesn’t… I hope you see this! Really simple set up process other than this bug, love your videos!

Don't think this works for when using an extended display for my Mac. Everything up to date (Mac book pro M1 max on 12.2, and iPad Pro M1 on 15.3), signed out on both, signed back in, no option under add displays beyond mirror or extend to. One possible issue though, was on the iPad under general, airplay and handoff only has the option for checking handoff. So not sure what your version was as mine does NOT show that....Good try, but not working for now
I used Synergy in 2006 and Maxivista in 2009 to perform same features as this universal control. I could control a IMac and a pc with multiple monitors with the Mac keyboard and mouse.
Well... I was using something similar almost 20 years ago (on windows): one mouse and keyboard to control 4 computers, with minimal network overhead. Copy paste of files was also supported, and all going over tcp/ip network (no bluetooth etc... needed). Keyboard input was sent to the computer where the mouse pointer was in. I don't remember the name of the software, but well worth the price when controlling multiple PC's. Now off course, networking bandwidth increased, so I have a 3 monitor setup and use remote desktop to control the machines.
The Bluetooth is used to detect appleid auth and seamless display arrangement. This feature extended to iPadOS and not just windows/MacOS. A much more technically challenging feature.

I’ve been using Sidecar mirroring on my Headless Mac mini M1 and my iPad Pro since it debuted. It is the only way I interface with my Mac is through my iPad Pro. Currently I’m using a VNC to sign into my Mac then launch mirroring from my Mac mini to my iPad because Sidecar gives a better and sharper direct Mac experience on my iPad but I wish Apple would make a way to launch into the Mac from the iPad from control center or an iPad icon app. I do you love a lot of the VNC controls so if Apple would buy VNC and make those controls toggle on and off when using Sidecar Mirroring from iPad to Mac, it would be a great solution. I’m Mentioning sidecar on this video Apple has rolled it into universal control instead of standalone feature as when it was first debuted.
I couldn't get it going between my 2016 MBP, 2020 iPad Pro and 2018 iPad Pro until I logged out of my Apple ID on the MBP, and then back in. It really is like magic!
@@Mr.Macintosh Another find... Having UC active on my 2016 MBP, and two iPad Pros renders them unavailable as Airdrop targets from my other MBP running Mojave. All are available again after unlinking the iPads. Airdrop compatibility may be something to test for under Catalina and Big Sur.

UC really seams to hate me. MacBookPro9,1 (OCLP to macOS Monterey 12.5.1) iPad Pro (2nd Gen) (on iPadOS: 15.6.1) some times 'link keyboard and mouse' will show up and I can connect, and even move the placement of the iPad about, but I can't get the mouse or keyboard to move to the iPad, and then the iPad disappears from the displays settings, I've tried all the tricks as pointed out here but still getting that drop out. a wired connection doesn't seem to work, and I'm wracking my brain over it. I could just bite the bullet and get a newer MBP but there is still a lot of life left in this mid-2012 any guidance would be welcome.
Can you transfer and use functioning numbers files from Mac to Ipad (i.e. taking the Ipad on a vacation) do some entries and other work then have the Mac updated with the modifications you performed?
Can you push the Apple Pencil from the iPad into the MacBook screen, so you can control the MacBook with the Pencil? (I often use this function on my Wacom.)
Have you posted a follow-up with support for universal control on legacy systems? I want to make sure I don't miss it. I have an older MacBook and iMac that I am trying to connect but display settings doesn't offer a display selection dropdown like the one demonstrated in this video.

Hello Jason, Great question! You are correct UC is not compatible with your Mac Pro 2013. WIth OpenCore Legacy Patcher you can unlock Universal control! I'm working on a video that will be out soon. It will follow the same process as my Unlock Airplay video. 👍
I have the iPad Air 4 and a MacBook Pro 13" M1, this is EXTREMELY unreliable for me, it does not work on most wifi, on my home wifi when I come home I have to reboot the iPad multiple times, usually need to disable "Cursor and Keyboard" before powering off, then back on and enable before it (sometimes) finally shows up. Does this work reliably for you?
I'm trying to use this feature as a KVM switch between three Macs: one iMac and 2 MBP. I would like to use the keyboard and mouse from my iMac, while extending the display from either one of my two MBPs to the iMac display. Keyboard and mouse sharing works until I extend my MBP display, then I can only use that MBP's keyboard and touchpad. It seems like this is not possible, but was wondering if anybody had tried this scenario successfully.

Hi, I have a Mac mini m1 (master keyboard and trackpad) and MacBook Pro M1 (slave). Curious if you could test this and let me know if you're seeing the same behavior. When I move over to my MacBook and go into the messages app the 2 finger scroll is super slow. It's pretty annoying. Can you tell me if you're seeing the same? Would appreciate it. I have 2 monitors with my M1 Mac mini going through a dell doc that works perfect however having trouble trying to use universal control with my M1 iPad Pro. My Logi MxKeys and with Mx Master 3 won't allow me scroll over to the iPad. Most likely an issue with the Monitors connected to my Dell Doc. Any thoughts?
Can I… using my Magic Trackpad on my M1 Mac Mini swipe over to my compatible iPad to start an audio file or video and have the audio come out of the iPad (or headphone Jack) as it normally would? This would be a huge help for my podcast.

So it only works with Bluetooth or usb? It would be nice if you could connect via Wi-Fi like Airplay. If its only bluetooth I'll probably have to finish getting my BT4 wireless card upgrade working on my 2010 imac if I can ever expect to make use of it in the future.
Hello @EarthquakeTickles! If you would like to use UC with wireless you need enable on both devices = must have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on.
For now it does except for a set of Macs that Apple specifically blacklisted. Right now it is working for older 2015 and lower Macs with OpenCore Legacy Patcher!
YES! Pretty cool huh? IF you wanted to test it out, all you need to do is update your OCLP mac to 12.3 Beta 1 and have a 2nd mac on the same 12.3 or iPad on 15.4!

Apologies if you have already addressed this but I am using a iPad Air 4 and a 2013 MacBook Air with latest Monterey thanks to OCLP (thank you!), my Universal Control works except drag and drop. The file or image vanishes when I drag from the MacBook it to the iPad and won’t transfer. I can drag and drop using sidecar so my guess it’s a UC beta bug my laptop has an issue with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@@Mr.Macintosh Yes and yes. The image I am dragging appears on the iPad under the cursor for half a second then disappears. I switched to Sidecar to check if I could drag and drop using that function and it worked fine, I then switched back to Universal Control and the drag and drop worked first time but not again. I am using OCLP v0.4.3
Will this let me mirror my ipad or iphone screen to the monitor connected to my Mac mini, and use third party keyboard and mouse connected to the Mac mini to control the ipad or iphone, with its screen being mirrored on the mac mini’s monitor? That would be my application if it worked and it would be awesome.
Hello! If you would like to use a different screen or mirror your display from your ipad or iphone to another mac that would be AirPlay. If you wanted to use your iPad to control your Mac that would be Universal Control. I hope that answers your question!
It’s basically ready to ship and the beta isn’t necessary. It’s almost seamless and bug free. They really worked hard to get to this point of refinement. Would be cool to is how fast the usbc-usbc transfer speed is between a mbp16 and a iMacPro Personally, I’m using it on a 2012mbp15 and the m1max mbp16. Either with extended display or UC. Very useful for legacy software
I'm confused by the minimum os versions its 02/09/22 and the latest os update on my m1 max is Monterey 12.2 and iPad Pro 4gen 12.9 the latest os I have is 15.3 they they both say up to date?? can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Hello @mrdre963 macOS 12.3 Beta is required to test out Universal Control. The public or final release of 12.3 will be made available to the public next month

Hello Fernando, what year and model is your Air and iPad? Just want to also make sure you are running 12.3 on the mac and 15.4 on the iPad. Don't forget that you also need to be signed into your same apple id on both devices. Are you able to use airplay/sidecar?
@@fermope24 I am having the same issues. I have a brand new iMac, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro. None of them will connect. I have done everything that is supposed to be done and they still won't connect. This is just a Beta. Hopefully they can get this right on the next update.

This is really odd, my devices complies with the requirements but none of these features are visible? I can only see airplay with just a single option and not the ‘universal control’. Must be for M1 owners only???

I am unable to update my macos big sur to newer version. I am getting error in updating the OS. When i try to install patch sur dmg, it is allowing me to reinstall the app. Can someone helo me out >?

One more question, If i update MacOs Monterey on top of patch sur, will it be a problem? or Do i need to clean install by using Opencore ? because few months ago, i updated my mid 2012 macbook to Monterey by using Opencore and my mac slowed down and i was not able to downgrade. I had to reset my mac and upgrade each version from mountain lion to El captain to mojave etc. I do want to upgrade to Monterey but i am afraid i might run to same problem. Please give me a suggestion for the above. either i should stick with Big Sur and how to resolve it. or I should upgrade to Monterey with recommended way of upgrading Thank you :)

I have two displays connected natively to my Mac Mini as an extended desktop. I also have an M1 MacBook Air and iPad. All OS's updated for UC. There seems to be a limitation connecting UC to my MBA along with the two displays on the Mac Mini.. Under "Link Keyboard and Mouse" my iPad shows up and it works fine. But my MBA does not show up. It does show up under extend display, but that's not what I want. Am I missing a setup issue? Thanks much in advance.
I disconnected one of my Mac Mini monitors. It did not change anything. The Mac Mini "sees" the MBA for extended desktop, but does not "see" it for "Link Keyboard and Mouse." I can't see what's wrong with the setup. It sees the iPad just fine.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble Steve. What year is your MBA? Also are you signed in with the same apple id on the MBA? Are you able to connect via airplay to the MBA?
Thanks for your reply and your concern. It's an M1 MBA on the same Apple ID as the 2018 Mini. I did not try AirPlay - that's a good question. I've had two long sessions with senior Apple Advisors, though, and I have been thru several online troubleshooting guides. Both Macs are connected to both wifi and wired ethernet. I am suspecting the ethernet, though I have disconnected it and made wifi the primary network, and that does not fix it. I have not deleted the ethernet line from Network settings completely, and I don't especially want to. But again, it worked immediately between mini and iPad, without messing around with networks. I'll check AirPlay - I have not tried AirPlay Mac to Mac before. I'll let you know. Thx again.

Yup, your specific model needs the blacklist removed. That is what the OCLP developers are working on right now 👍

Can I… using my Magic Trackpad on my M1 Mac Mini swipe over to my compatible iPad to start an audio file or video and have the audio come out of the iPad (or headphone Jack) as it normally would? This would be a huge help for my podcast.
Yes, it only shares the mouse and keyboard. If you play video/audo on a device it will come out of that device.
Hello Mr Macintosh, Just curious but will the macbook air 2010 2gb ram and with 64gb remaining of space will it work with opencore legacy patcher (with macos big sur) if best i need a very quick answer
So it only works with Bluetooth or usb? It would be nice if you could connect via Wi-Fi like Airplay.
If its only bluetooth I'll probably have to finish getting my BT4 wireless card upgrade working on my 2010 imac if I can ever expect to make use of it in the future.
Hello @EarthquakeTickles! If you would like to use UC with wireless you need enable on both devices = must have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on.

For now it does except for a set of Macs that Apple specifically blacklisted. Right now it is working for older 2015 and lower Macs with OpenCore Legacy Patcher!

YES! Pretty cool huh? IF you wanted to test it out, all you need to do is update your OCLP mac to 12.3 Beta 1 and have a 2nd mac on the same 12.3 or iPad on 15.4!

Apologies if you have already addressed this but I am using a iPad Air 4 and a 2013 MacBook Air with latest Monterey thanks to OCLP (thank you!), my Universal Control works except drag and drop. The file or image vanishes when I drag from the MacBook it to the iPad and won’t transfer. I can drag and drop using sidecar so my guess it’s a UC beta bug my laptop has an issue with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Adam, that is a strange one! Are you using 12.3.1 and 15.4.1 ?
@@Mr.Macintosh Yes and yes. The image I am dragging appears on the iPad under the cursor for half a second then disappears. I switched to Sidecar to check if I could drag and drop using that function and it worked fine, I then switched back to Universal Control and the drag and drop worked first time but not again. I am using OCLP v0.4.3

Will this let me mirror my ipad or iphone screen to the monitor connected to my Mac mini, and use third party keyboard and mouse connected to the Mac mini to control the ipad or iphone, with its screen being mirrored on the mac mini’s monitor?

Hello! If you would like to use a different screen or mirror your display from your ipad or iphone to another mac that would be AirPlay. If you wanted to use your iPad to control your Mac that would be Universal Control. I hope that answers your question!

Is it possible to move files/folders all the way across from the MBP to the iPad? Or, do you need to go MBP to mini then mini to iPad?
Great question Clint! You can do both, but on the iPad you need to use the files app. It will accept files & folders 👍

Personally, I’m using it on a 2012mbp15 and the m1max mbp16. Either with extended display or UC. Very useful for legacy software
I should test that transfer speed again with USB-C, I remember transferring 12GB over DFU mode and it was going REALLY quick.
I'm confused by the minimum os versions its 02/09/22 and the latest os update on my m1 max is Monterey 12.2 and iPad Pro 4gen 12.9 the latest os I have is 15.3 they they both say up to date?? can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Hello @mrdre963 macOS 12.3 Beta is required to test out Universal Control. The public or final release of 12.3 will be made available to the public next month

Hello Fernando, what year and model is your Air and iPad? Just want to also make sure you are running 12.3 on the mac and 15.4 on the iPad. Don't forget that you also need to be signed into your same apple id on both devices. Are you able to use airplay/sidecar?

@@fermope24 I am having the same issues. I have a brand new iMac, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro. None of them will connect. I have done everything that is supposed to be done and they still won't connect. This is just a Beta. Hopefully they can get this right on the next update.

2 years later and it still glitches randomly and can’t be reconnected until it feels like it. Very useful when it works but infuriating..
This is really odd, my devices complies with the requirements but none of these features are visible? I can only see airplay with just a single option and not the ‘universal control’. Must be for M1 owners only???
Hello, UC is also available on Intel Macs. Just double checking both the Mac and Ipad are on the latest 12.3 & 15.4 Beta? Also are you logged in with the same apple id on both? Also try connecting via airplay, then disconnect.Do you see the option now?

because few months ago, i updated my mid 2012 macbook to Monterey by using Opencore and my mac slowed down and i was not able to downgrade. I had to reset my mac and upgrade each version from mountain lion to El captain to mojave etc. I do want to upgrade to Monterey but i am afraid i might run to same problem.
Please give me a suggestion for the above. either i should stick with Big Sur and how to resolve it.
or I should upgrade to Monterey with recommended way of upgrading

iPad OS 15.4???????????? 15.3 literally JUST came out.
I have two displays connected natively to my Mac Mini as an extended desktop. I also have an M1 MacBook Air and iPad. All OS's updated for UC. There seems to be a limitation connecting UC to my MBA along with the two displays on the Mac Mini.. Under "Link Keyboard and Mouse" my iPad shows up and it works fine. But my MBA does not show up. It does show up under extend display, but that's not what I want. Am I missing a setup issue? Thanks much in advance.
I disconnected one of my Mac Mini monitors. It did not change anything. The Mac Mini "sees" the MBA for extended desktop, but does not "see" it for "Link Keyboard and Mouse." I can't see what's wrong with the setup. It sees the iPad just fine.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble Steve. What year is your MBA? Also are you signed in with the same apple id on the MBA? Are you able to connect via airplay to the MBA?
Thanks for your reply and your concern. It's an M1 MBA on the same Apple ID as the 2018 Mini. I did not try AirPlay - that's a good question. I've had two long sessions with senior Apple Advisors, though, and I have been thru several online troubleshooting guides. Both Macs are connected to both wifi and wired ethernet. I am suspecting the ethernet, though I have disconnected it and made wifi the primary network, and that does not fix it. I have not deleted the ethernet line from Network settings completely, and I don't especially want to. But again, it worked immediately between mini and iPad, without messing around with networks. I'll check AirPlay - I have not tried AirPlay Mac to Mac before. I'll let you know. Thx again.
Airplay works from Mac Mini to M1 MBA. It does not seem to work from MBA to Mini, but that might not be surprising. AirDrop works in both directions.
Also, UC works from M1 MBA to iPad. Everything works except the one thing I actually wanted. I guess I'll call Apple again soon. Probably a bug.
