  • I have been enjoying my Sonos Era 300, using them as surrounds for my Sonos Arc, adding 6 discrete actual physical channels of surround and height effects to my Dolby Atmos movies.
    But did you know that there is one unresolved bug that has persisted from Day 1? Do you want to know if it affects you? Watch on.

    2:24 lest we forget that Sonos is the same company that nerfed the Sub gen 3, and took ~5 months to role out an adequate fix… My guess is that Sonos assumed that folks using the Era 300 as surrounds was going to be more of a niche use case than it turned out to be. It would be nice is Sonos rollers out the ability to fully customize the tuning of each driver, even if it was buried in some advanced settings panel. I would also love to see Sonos allow you to do full mapping of your space in real time using the LiDAR sensor on iPhone or iPad get a full speck of whatever space you’re listening in. Either way, I’ll keep holding my breath that they will ever add individual individual sliders for the Era 300 or allow you to push audio through the front facing driver 🙄

      @@mrgold3591 I think this is what true play is designed for. I believe that in the tricky situation you have described true play would give more attention to the center position if necessary. I have a large open room with 9 foot ceilings and the sound is seamless throughout the entire listening area. There are no holes. The rear center is present without being overbearing. It adds drift and flow to what's happening on screen.

      @mrgold3591 Год назад +1

      @@chillywill95831 I think that was Pete Pee was referring too about the center channel on the rear Era 300 being disabled in home theater group mode. It may or may not be needed in every situation depending on room environment, set-up, and speaker placement. Having an active center channel on the rear Era 300 "could" plug an audio hole if someone's particular room set-up created one or their listening preference leans towards having the Era 300 center active. Sonos doesn't give us that option. Kinda like the Henry Ford saying about the Model T automobile: "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black."

    • @chillywill95831
      @chillywill95831 Год назад

      @@mrgold3591 if the rear center needs more boost based on an individual room, do you think Trueplay could resolve that issue? I mean that's exactly what it's for. The 300s have plenty of headroom to fill in holes where necessary if you Trueplay your system. It will connect the dots. I have exactly that kind of open large open room that's difficult to feel a theater effect in and I'm having no problem wishing I had a rear center channel to tweak. I think this need to control everything in a plug and play set up is overrated. If you go separate components including a Dolby Atmos enabled receiver, then you could get caught up in tweaking the system to the point where you never actually enjoy what you're watching. Sonos is plug and Trueplay and enjoy! Endless tweaking is not necessary! 😂
      I hope I'm not coming off as insulting or argumentive, but I'm an old school audiophile who came into my own when Dolby pro logic and laser discs were a thing. I had component systems that I spent tens of thousands of dollars on that never came close to what Sonos is giving us when it comes to theater. Now, music listening is a different animal altogether. I've spent $300.00 on a single damn digital cable to connect end points of a DAC to a CD player. I have some Pedigree here! And, I'm just saying, trust Peter's sound settings and Trueplay. Peter is not strongly advocating for a rear center switch in his own set up with the 300s.

    I have finally got figured it out (by chance). I have been complaining for months that Sonos Arc height channels were not great and more recently complaining about Era 300. The speakers are great and what I was getting wrong was the input signal because I was following the perfect recommendations for my Samsung Q90T. All wrong. The best suggestions are: 1) tweak your eARC / auto / pass through settings so that you get Dolby Digital Plus when streaming and you will get Dolby Atmos (DD+) in the app (About my System section); 2) if you have a Blue-Ray Player UHD (like PS5) play around so that you get Dolby Atmos True HD. It will sounds great. Do not simply look at the front app - I was getting Dolby Atmos but not DD+ not TrueHD and it sounded miserable. This is the greatest advice I could give. Advice to Sonos - create a device (audio extractor and HDMI switch) to bypass the TV, as the TV are the real weak link in the Sonos systems.

    I’ve solved the rear surround volume issue! But only under certain conditions. I own an A/V company so I’ve been dealing with this for a long time. Nothing that I tried worked but this morning I bought an Xbox Series S, installed the Dolby app and Plex. I downloaded a few UHD 4K movies in truehd 7.1 atmos, specifically Dunkirk and Lord of the Rings. The Xbox is setup correctly and goes into a Sony a8h and then eARC out to the ARC with the Xbox and Sony set to passthrough. There was an immediate difference, it was like I was using a different system. Using the Dolby built in channel tester the slider didn’t make a difference. The only time it works is playing those movies like I said. I got on the phone with sonos and they ran diagnostics on my system as I changed sources and played what worked and adjusted the slider and they confirmed that they saw a difference.

      The recommendation given by Sonos with regards to the 300s is an excellent starting place for positioning them. Just give them some air behind your seating position and try to center the listening area in concert with your television as much as possible. I like them further away from my ears because I don't want to be able to hear sound coming from the speakers. themselves. That's how sound works in real life. You ever hear someone's alarm going off on their car and you can pin point which way to look, but the alarm is typically not blasting right in your ear right? Just face them towards your television, no toe-in is necessary and then Trueplay your system. Trueplay will fill the holes and the reflections so that your soundbar, surround channels, and subwoofer are in lock step with each other! Also, you should definitely take Peter's suggestions on the sound settings. They really worked for me. I had to pull the subwoofer down a notch because I have 2 sub Gen 3s, but the rest of the settings are spot on!

    Dear Peter Pee,
    Thank you very much for reviewing.
    Actually I have only one question and I am really interested to know the answer from you and from your experience.
    What is the benefit buying very expensive surround speakers from Sonos if there is no dialogue sound coming from them and only effect sound?
    As I have seen with my system Sonos Arc, Sub Gen 3, and Pair of Ones, I like the system, but not much and when we watch movies with family, the ONLY one thing we can hear from surround speakers are EFFECT SOUNDS especially ONLY DURING ACTION MOMENTS, for the rest of the movie, the surround speakers are useless because no sound because the rest of the movie is dialogue which is only coming from Arc, where is the sound 3D sound?
    Honestly, I am not going to buy very expensive speakers and surround speakers only to hear effect sound like helicopter sound coming from my head?!?!? It should be the sound effect and dialogue are coming from all speakers.
    Especially for my parents because they are old and like watching news and sports on TV, my parents always increase the sound level to 85% because they want to hear the dialogue from surround speakers, but unfortunately the Sonos set system the dialogue is coming ONLY from front speaker ARC, they told me when they sit in the back of the room when the surround speakers behind them, that they don’t hear the dialogue from surround speakers ONLY Effect sound and sometimes 0% no sound at all when they are watching news and sports. They really want to hear the dialogue from each speakers wherever they sit in the room.
    Finally, I would say really Thanks to Sony (HT-A9 + SA-SW5), the engineers do really well and my parents are very happy and they said to me THANK YOU because they can sit wherever in the room and they can hear the dialogue and effect sounds together from all the speakers and moreover they never increase the sound level more than 40% while when we use Sonos set system my parents increase the sound level till 85% until they can hear only the dialogue sound from front speaker Arc when they sit in the back of the room.
    Thank you very much and I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

    I tell you, the more I read many of your comments the more I realize you guys do not know what theater sound should replicate in your home environment. The ERA 300s are nearly as perfect as you can get to a surround channel speaker that provides upward firing and bipolarity for surround sound. The truth is you should not be able to localize or hear a particular speaker emit sound when you are in a home theater system. My experience with the Sonos era 300s is nothing short of amazing in the theater setting. The front speakers should not be firing because the TV is the point of sound origin not destination. If you have them set up properly everything should be firing from around you. and who wants to hear a rear channel banging in their ears when you're trying to listen to what's going on on screen? The rear channel is just for fill and it always has been. Even if you go back to the very old school days of home theater and a component system setup, the rear channel was never designed to localize sound. It was always an ambient effect as it should be. And, for that matter, rear left and right channels are ambient channels as well although they can get more action than a rear channel. I don't need to be able to adjust the inside speakers of the ERA 300s in surround mode. Tune your speakers with Trueplay and watch extraction 2, John wick 4, or Fast X. You will completely get how good the ERA 300s are. You literally hear nothing coming from the ERA 300s, but you hear everything from everywhere as the movie intended. The One SLs absolutely localized the surround channel so that you could pinpoint the speaker rather than the sound in an open space. BIG DIFFERENCE!

      Good speech. The best cinema solutions enhance the 360 soundstage without highlighting any speaker or driver. In my opinion the Era 300’s or this style of speaker are the missing link that finally gives Sonos a more immersive (cinema) sound profile and deeper sound stage that “one’s” and “fives” couldn’t achieve. With Era300’s the Sonos solution is finally greater than the sum of it’s parts. But hey, personal preference will always trump the science, after all, it’s only worth doing any of this to enhance your own personal listening pleasure 🙂

    I was a big skeptic (vocal skeptic that complained a lot about it) when it came to having the 300s as surrounds. I just added them to my setup yesterday (arc, sub x2). These work great for me. I would say there are some tweaks that could be made. I will not be returning them and suspect sonos will make some changes to refine these. Probably not worth $1k but most said a 2nd sub wasn’t worth the $799 but I disagree. So far these are good. I have them turned down to -1 for tv and -2 for music.

      It's been a few months since your comment and I imagine Sonos released updates to tweak these. What's your opinion now? I'm coming from one sl's as surrounds and thinking of replacing with the 300s. I do watch as much atmos content as I can with the Arc and Sub Gen 3. Do you think it's worth it?

    Thank you. For me the rears are way to loud because I don't have a lot of space behind me. Maybe I do trueplay again, but put my seating position even further back. Could that help?

    • @mrgold3591
      @mrgold3591 Год назад +1

      I ended up going with One SLs in my Office Beam+Sub because the rears do sit 2 feet from my sofa with all three along a wall. I went with Fives as my rear surrounds in my open great room main TV room with the Arc+dual subs because the Fives sit 9-12 feet back from my primary listening position. Seems like the Era 300 and Fives need some distance to maximize and balance out the sound. I like the One SLs and Symfonisks if you under 3 feet from you primary listening position and can't take advantage of Atmos effect because of the room configuration.

      @mrgold3591 I had the one sls as the rears for a while. They are good, but the 300s are better in many ways. In my opinion, just the rears are too loud. Hope the update fixes that.

      @@jcruz6453 I purchased my Arc system before I knew about the release date for the Era 100/300 speakers. The Era 300 are an improvement in Atmos over the One/Era 100/Fives. Unfortunately, my cable TV provider only does 5.1, I don't listen to spatial audio, and probably only 35% of the streaming shows I watch are in Atmos. Not sure how the Era 300 compare to the Fives with non-Atmos content? I'm very happy with how the Fives sound now don't want to hear the Era 300 because it might make me want to upgrade instantly.

    Is there a way to set up the era 300 in 2 congurations? I’ve got them set up as surrounds and love them, but briefly had them as a stereo pair as I was waiting for stands to arrive.
    They are great in both situations but obviously at the moment, music playback doesn’t come thru the front (main) speaker. Any ideas?

    Why not let people have the
    Arc, Side surrounds and rear surrounds? Along with 2 subs.
    I have the Arc with 2 rear Ones and 2 subs as a secondary listening/movie watching setup. Seem like if they just let you add sides separately that would be pretty killer. I have a high end home theater and really enjoy the Sonos as well.

    Hello Peter,
    I have a problem with my Sonos system and hope you can help me. :)
    In my living room I have the following Sonos setup:
    Arc + Sub + 2×Era 300
    TV: LG Oled CX with eArc connection
    I bought the new Avatar Part 2 via Apple TV and it is available there in the German sound format "Dolby Digital Plus 7.1".
    However, when I start the film in German, it only plays Multi-Channel PCM 5.1. However, as far as I know, my Sonos setup should be a 7.1.4 setup....
    (The English soundtrack is played back in Dolby Atmos as usual).
    Do you have any idea how I can force the output format to PCM 7.1?
    Many thanks in advance!

      I would also be interested in an answer here as I have a similar issue with Samsung TV from 2020 where PS5 sends 7.1 but Arc + Sub + Era 300 only give me Dolby 5.1 or Dolby Multichannel 5.1 (not 7.1). Unfortunately I think the issue is the the TVs not having good pass through. An Arcana will help but very expensive

      I have now received a solution to the problem in the Sonos Community.
      Specifically with the LG TVs, the Digital Audio Output must be set to "Pass Through" in the Audio Settings under "Additional Settings". I previously had the settings set to "Automatic".
      I think with the Samsung TV's there will be a similar setting option.

    I've read a few bs comments on reddit about why homepods can't do what Sonos does. BS!
    Sonos's has show what software can do for speakers.
    Apple could do the same, they just for some (blank) reason don't want to.
    They could easily allow you to pair 2 OR MORE homepods together to do what the arc and ERA 300's do.

    The 300s are an expensive mistake. Unless they completely change the sound profile they are no upgrade from the 100's. Even atmos from these speakers sounds overcooked and just wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if their next attempt is an improvement.

    Mr. Pee., You are the only one I could think of to ask this question ... Having 2 second audio dropouts with Apple TV 4k gen 3 with my Sonos Arc setup, using ezcoo splitter that creates earc port between Apple TV and Sonos Arc and Sony x900e. only happens with Atmos content and wondering if Sonos or the Apple TV is having issue with dolby mat or multichannel pcm as the Sonos app reads its receiving multichannel pcm... the ezcoo works better than the orei I returned and has not had an issue. tried firestick and no dropout but that is only dolby digital compressed. wondering if you have had this issue, thanks...
